Nozzles for the mainwash
The main wash requireshigh-impact flat fan nozzles or tongue-typenozzles. The spray angleshould be 30 to 45 degrees.Their sharp jet means thattongue-type nozzles areideally suited to the lowpressure.High-pressure flat fan nozzles differ from low-pressure nozzles by virtueof their hardened nozzlemouthpiece, which givesthese nozzles a longer service life.
Nozzles for the pre-wash
The purpose of the pre-wash is to soften the dirt.Flat fan nozzles or tongue-type nozzles witha wide spray angle and alow flow rate are preferred.
Nozzles for sill and wheelwashing
The lower third of the vehicle is mostly where dirtis found (e.g. impacted insects). A high impact iscrucial to removing thistype of dirt. We recommendhigh-pressure nozzleswith a narrow spray angle.
7
Arrangement of low-pressure flat fan nozzles
Lechler flat fan nozzlesgive you a linear impactwith even droplet applica-tion. A prerequisite for thisis that the spray widths Boverlap by approximately1/3-1/4. Here the nozzlesshould be aligned approxi-mately 5-15° to the pipe'slongitudinal axis in order toprevent the sprays frombeing interrupted.
Nozzles for applying wax
Wax should be applied asevenly as possible. This requires a defined nozzlearrangement. For this werecommend our series652 in conjunction with aretaining nut and eyeletclamp. Manifolds fitted with this series distribute the watervery evenly.
Nozzles for rinsing
Rinsing is the last stagebefore drying. This requiressmall droplets that run offthe vehicle quickly. Flat fannozzles with a very lowflow rate are used in mostcases. The nozzles are easy toalign in conjunction with abayonet cap and a balljoint.

Nozzles for water jet cleaning
In pretreatment and painting systems, water jetcleaning is often employed as an automated process.Flat fan nozzles and tongue-type nozzles with eyelet clamps are the main variants used for this. The components pass through several process stepsin which they are treated with various fluids. These include, for example, aqueous alkaline solutionsand deionised water. Eductor nozzles are also usedunder water, the purpose of which is to prevent sedimentation.
Nozzles and installationpossibilities of pretreat-ment
For this application, Lechlersupplies many differentnozzles and installationpossibilities (see MEMO-SPRAY®, EasyClip andcouplings, spacers andend caps for pipe installa-tion).

Nozzles for the rinsing zone
At the end of a painting line, the componentspass through a rinsing zone. There, surpluspaint particles that are still mechanically attached are washed off. This is done according to the cascade principle, i.e. in several stages with increasingly clean rinsing agent until deionised water is used.

Nozzles for alkaline texturing
Flat fan nozzles in several series-connected modules are used in this process. Nozz-les made of PVDF are preferred, because they are resistant to the chemicals used.

Nozzles for wafer moistening
After the sawing process, the wafers are moistenedwith hollow cone nozzles.Hollow cone nozzles pro-duce a fine spray mist thatsettles on the wafers. Thisensures that no impuritiesdry onto the wafer, therebyalso ensuring an efficientwafer production process.
Circuit board manufacturing
Developing, etching, stripping. In a typical inner layer linefor manufacturing circuitboards, the resist is develo-ped in the developer, thebare copper is sprayedwith an acidic etching solu-tion in the etching moduleand is removed down to the base material, andthe resist is stripped off by using an alkaline solution. This involves the use ofmany types of nozzles that
are already familiar, suchas series 646 bayonetquick-locking system.
Wafer cleaning
After the sawing process, the wafers are gentlycleaned with full conenozzles. The cleaning me-dium is sprayed onto theindividual wafers, therebyachieving a homogeneouscleaning result across theentire surface.

The most important criteriathat must be taken into ac-count when selecting nozzlesare listed below.
Impact
The impact force of a liquid jeton a surface plays an impor-tant role in surface technology. The ratio of the impact force(F) to the sprayed surface (A)is referred to as the impact (I).
The following explains the parameters with which the impact can be influenced.
Impact surface and jet shape
The impact surface representsthe area that droplets strike. Inother words the area impactedby the liquid jet. Nozzles witha small impact surface alsoattain the highest impact values. These nozzles include, for example, solid jet nozzlesand flat fan nozzles with a narrow spray angle.
Pressure
Increasing the connected pres-sure results in an increase inthe spray impact. Doubling thepressure while maintaining thesame flow rate results in adoubling of the impact.
Flow rate
Increasing the flow rate byusing a larger nozzle increa-ses the impact, assuming thatthe other parameters (sprayangle, pressure and medium)remain the same.

Spraying distance (verticaldistance to the nozzle)
Theoretically, for atomizationnozzles, the greater the distance the greater also thesurface area sprayed, resultingin the impact being reducedaccordingly. The spray angle and jet depthensure that the sprayed surface area becomes largeras the spraying distance increases. In theory, the following appliesto flat fan nozzles: If the spray-ing distance is doubled, thesprayed surface area quadru-ples. Consequently, the impactdecreases four-fold.

With a flat fan nozzle, doubling the distance would ideally result in a qua-drupling of the surface area sprayed.
Spray depth
When flat fan nozzles areused, the impact that can beachieved depends greatly onthe quality of the spray. Forexample, using special jetgeometries (Lechler high-pressure flat fan nozzles) or ahigh flow quality, a shallowerspray depth can be obtained.
Assuming that the other para-meters (pressure, flow rate, spray angle and medium) remain the same, a shallowerspray depth results in a higherimpact.

The solid jet nozzle does notspray, but rather produces aclosed jet that hits at a con-centrated point. The jet only begins to breakup after some distance. Twin-fluid nozzles have a nar-row spray angle of approxi-mately 20° due to the highspeed at which the compres-sible medium exits. However,as the distance from thenozzle increases, the spraypattern becomes increasinglyless sharply defined.Twin-fluid nozzles normallyproduce full cone or flat fanspray patterns, and some versions can be changed overaccordingly.
Spray angle and sprayingbehaviour
Depending on the version andjob, single-fluid nozzles areavailable with differently step-ped spray angles from 0° (solidjet nozzles) to 360° (tank-cleaning nozzles). The sprayangles quoted by Lechlerapply close to the nozzle andin a still atmosphere. Gravityand flow processes in the ambient atmosphere alter thespray pattern. Depending onthe version, single-fluid nozzles can spray the liquidas a hollow cone, full cone orflat fan.

Liquid distribution
In coating processes, for example, it is attached to the homogenous distribution of the sprayed liquid. In order to obtain an even liquid distribution, severalnozzles must be arrangednext to each other becauseone nozzle alone would produce a parabolic liquiddistribution as standard. The arrangement of severalnozzles enables an almosteven distribution to be obtained by overlapping.
Measuring the distribution
The liquid distribution in ameasuring plane is deter-mined by collecting the volume of liquid in a combi-nation of Plexiglas cylinders. The filling level of the indivi-dual cylinders is determinedcompletely automatic. Thismeasuring process is alsosuitable for recording the liquid distribution of a nozzleacross a moving measuringplane. This enables conveyorbelt spraying to be simulated, for example.
3 Droplet sizes
Twin-fluid nozzles can pro-duce very fine to extremelyfine droplets, this being mainlydependent on the flow rateratio of the compressible me-dium being used (m³/h) to theatomized liquid (l/min). Thegreater this ratio, the finer theatomization. In the case of single-fluid nozzles, the dropletspectrum is determinedprimarily by the pressure, thenozzle design and the flowrate. Increasing pressure results in finer atomization, butmostly only up to a certainlevel.
Provided that the pressureand flow rate are the same, hollow cone nozzles producevery fine to fine droplets, full cone nozzles produce somewhat coarser dropletspectrums and flat fan nozzleshave the coarsest dropletspectrum. If we comparenozzles of one series at a particular pressure, nozzleswith a lower flow rate producefiner droplet spectrums thannozzles with a higher flow rate.
4 Factors that influence thetemperature behaviour ofnozzle materials
A distinction must be madehere between low-temperaturebehaviour and high-tempera-ture behaviour. Applicationswith temperatures up to 140°Care very common, becausethis is the range within whichfor example most cleaning applications and sterilisationprocesses fall.Applications with higher temperatures are rare, and applications at very low tem-peratures are even more rare.
The general temperature information from material datasheets must always be scrutinised for every single
5 case of nozzle use. The mainfactors that influence the suitability of a nozzle materialat higher temperatures are:Pressure and the associatedmechanical stress type alongwith chemistry and time. Chemical processes can bemore aggressive at high temperatures.A material may be able towithstand them if this tempe-rature occurs for a short period only. In all materials, high temperatures result in reduced strength values. The mechanical stress typemust therefore also be takeninto account in high-pressureapplications, in particular. Inaddition, vibrations in the system can cause prematurefailure.

Material and wear
Nozzle wear depends prima-rily on the conditions of useand the nozzle material. Normally, the nozzle's liquiddischarge opening wears as aresult of material abrasion. The following conditions ofuse can speed up wear:
n Operating the nozzle abovethe recommended pressurerange
n Solids in the liquid and alsohard particles
n The use of chemically aggressive substances (seefigure)
The nozzle body can alsowear from the outside if thenozzle is used in a harmfulenvironment (corrosive gases, radiation, temperature).
The diagram below shows the factors that influencenozzle wear.
6 Signs of nozzle wear
Nozzle wear becomes apparent from a noticeable increase in flow rate. Thecause of this is the enlargedcross section of the liquidopening that results from material abrasion. This meansthat if a pressure is perma-nently set, more liquid isdischarged than it was origi-nally intended. The result of this is higherfresh water and waste watercosts. Fig. 1 shows an example of aheavily corroded spray ball.
Material wear
In most cases, excessive wearcan be counteracted by selec-ting a different material. Oneof the most common cases isthe atomization of a liquid witha solid component. Such particle-laden liquids cause significant wear if the particleshave a greater hardness thanthe nozzle material (Fig. 2).The table shows different materials and their averageVickers hardness. The values are for the pur-pose of rough estimates only.
