Why Precast Concrete Pavement?Heavy traffic volumes (highways & airports) dictate that repairs & rehab are carried out rapidlyThe advantages of precast pavement are:o better quality concrete, o better curing conditions – at fabrication plant, o minimal weather restrictions on placemento reduced delay prior to opening to traffic – no on-site curing of

concrete.AND, precast concrete has a great track record in structural applications (bridges, buildings, etc)

Precast pavement systems are fabricated off-site, transported to the project site and installed on a prepared foundation (existing pavement or re-graded foundation).

The system components require minimal field curing or time to achieve strength before opening to traffic.

These systems are used for rapid repair, rehabilitation and reconstruction of asphalt and concrete pavements.

Super-Slab has been designed so bedding grout can be easily and positively pumped under each slab to ensure complete and full bedding. Bedding grout must reach a strength of 750 PSI before the slabs are open to traffic. A mixture of cement, water, fluidifier and accelerator have been used for bedding grout. It must have a flow rate of not more than 30 seconds through a standard flow cone, to insure it will flow properly under the slab. The grout distribution system, shown in an earlier slide is again shown above. In the photo on the lower left, a workman is pumping bedding grout in one port hole until it comes out the other, giving proof that grout has traversed the length of the grout chamber and has filled any voids encountered along the way.

Project objective is to develop tools for public agencies to use for the design, construction, installation, maintenance, and evaluation of modular pavement systems.

By necessity, the primary focus of this study will be precast concrete pavements.

The “parent” project for R06 was contracted on March 16 for $350 K. The main contractor is Texas Transportation Institute. And as the other “parent” projects, the main deliverable for R06 will be recommendations and plan for the assessment of current technologies and development of new ones. This plan will help define the nature of the “child” projects on Nondestructive evaluation.
