  • Should you and I witness ?No.It can be scary and uncomfortable.It can be embarrassing.It takes the skill of a theologian.Build a relationship, then maybe.However, . . ..

  • I dont respect people who dont proselytize. I dont respect that at all. If you believe that there is a heaven and hell, and people could be going to hell or not getting eternal life or whatever, and you think its not really worth telling them this because it would make it socially awkward. . . . How much do you have to hate somebody to not proselytize. How much do you have to hate somebody to believe everlasting life is possible and not tell them that?

  • Should you and I witness ?Yes.Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear the one who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is Gods power for salvation to everyone who believes. Sober up as you should, and stop sinning! For some have no knowledge of God I say this to your shame! • Instead of preaching the good news that sinners can be made righteous in Christ and escape the wrath to come, we have settled for a gospel that implies that Gods primary purpose in saving us is to unfold a wonderful plan for our lives: to solve our problems, make us happy in Christ, and rescue us from the hassles of this life. Note: In the notes under the slides, the bold print is information which should be taught. The non-bold print is information that helps the instructor understand the content of the slides. This is the One-to-One seminar. (You say this after the first line has settled in.) This is the first of two parts (This is said after the third line appears.). So, I welcome you. Im glad you are here and have been praying that we will bless God and He will bless us much during our time together. In the two parts of this presentation there will be memorization for the audience that will be initiated and promoted by the presenter, primarily through repetition, but also through pairing up the audience in groups of two or three people. Hand signs will be utilized during the learning process, but not when sharing the gospel with others. The goal is to have a framework that provides the essentials of the gospel, and serves as a foundation on which to build more information as it becomes necessary.Furthermore, the goal is to have Christians witnessing at least once a week for a 6 months to a year so it becomes an enjoyable habit, and to hold them accountable in achieving this goal.Mission: Every Christian in the world working to fulfill the Great Commission by repeatedly witnessing one-to-one.Vision: Every Christian witnessing one-to-one regularly by1. being trained to do it2. being coached to do it.3. being held accountable to do it.The rationale of this seminar comes (unfortunately) from a controversial figure, George McGavran, who promoted and promulgated the primacy of the Great Commission, and who wrote that anyone allowing personal evangelism to be eclipsed in any way is guilty of parallelism, by which he meant allowing any other belief or activity to run parallel with personal evangelism in importance. He furthermore wrote, Far too many congregations and denominations, facing the most responsive world ever to exist, are spending 85-99 percent of their time, prayer, money, and thought in looking after themselves (8), The New Testament is full of passages that indicate the steady purpose of the Triune God to make the gospel known throughout the entire world and to institute a new kind of life based on complete obedience to Him, a complete surrender of self to Christ, and a mighty multiplication of Christian congregations (14), and Let me assure you that full doctrinal correctness will certainly lead to effective evangelism (28), and If we are to be biblically sound, we must reach out to the unsaved. We must discern ripe harvest fields. . . . We must recognize that the greatest danger facing practicing Christians is to practice their Christianity among themselves, to tell the good news only to those who come to their church, and to be unconcerned about those who do not (39), and Most ordinary Christians, no matter how earnestly Christian they are, find it embarrassing to talk to neighbors about accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior (50), and He should sincerely believe that if one is to be a biblically sound Christian, he must aim at effective world evangelizations at home and abroad (84), and If only one out of ten in any congregation becomes effectively evangelistic, that congregation will grow. . . . it will also train at least 20 percent of its members to speak courteously and persuasively to the lost in their neighborhoods (51). These quotes came from McGavrans book, Effective Evangelism.*You can inject: Light from a star is under the control of God. The blood in your veins and arteries is under the care of God. Do not elaborate.***After reading Exodus 9, say, You may think this is an Old Testament theme only. Not true. Look at Romans 9. From the beginning of the Old Testament to the end of the New, God radiates His glory; that is, Who He is.*God desires to be worshipped by every people group on this earth of which there are about 17,000.*Ask the audience to replace name with reputation as the verses are read, and emphasize that God is interested in global glory not just His local glory.*Lead the audience in substituting reputation for name and glory as the verse is read again.Ask the audience if Gods reputation deserves praise. Answer, yes; God is the Creator, Savior and Sustainer of everything. Then explain that Gods desire is for everyone to recognize His reputation (glory).*ForYourInformation (FYI) (not to be taught during a seminar): Question: Were 1-2-1 decision events practiced in the Old Testament era in order for a person to be saved? One-to-One witnessing events are not recorded in the Old Testament, but that they did occur is strongly implied as seen in the following evidence. The Old Testament comes complete with faith events. Hebrews eleven examines the lives of Old Testament heroes and states that faith was a part of their becoming righteous. From Abel to Moses, these events of faith are highlighted by the author of Hebrews. In addition to these faith events, proper names were changed (example: Jacob to Israel, Genesis 32:28) and Old Testament saints called upon the name of the Lord (Genesis 4:26). These events imply a spiritual dynamic that should be examined. (Evangelism in the Old Testament Michael Spradlin, Journal of Evangelism and Missions, Volume 5, Spring 2006, pages 41-43.) Of further note are numerous Old Testament personages who called upon people to make a decision for the Lord: Exodus 32:26, Joshua 24:16, 1 Kings 18:21, Amos 5:14, Ecclesiastes 12:1, and 1 Samuel 10:5. Thus, Old Testament followers of the Lord were required to experience a faith event in order to be right with the Lord. Obviously, not all of the people of Israel were faithful followers of the Lord.**After you read glory, make a brief explanation, Glory means fame and reputation. As you read the verse explain that nations means Gentiles, all the non-Jews of the world no matter where they live.FYI (not to be taught during the seminar): David drew from three of the Psalms previously composed to compile this hymn of thanksgiving to God which is found in 1 Chronicles 16:8-36. Then he probably assigned it to be sung at the Temple, thus assuring that the Israelite responsibility to communicate the greatness of God to the Gentiles would be repeatedly rehearsed before the Israelites in worship.

Keep in mind that the Israelites did sing these song-psalms regularly as one of the key methods of preserving the stories of their heritage from generations to generation. Poets and singers werent incidental entertainers in most ancient cultures; they were revered as the historians, the keepers of tradition. For example, notice Gods command to Moses to write down this song and teach it to the Israelites and have them sing it so that it may be a witness for me. (Deuteronomy 31:19). Some of these were the people whom Jesus himself described as traversing land and sea to make a single proselyte. Saul followed their path; Paul built on their efforts and went beyond them with the new gospel he preached, which allowed the Greeks to remain Greeks and not be circumcised and culturally assimilated into the Jewish way of life. This was 30 years ago and the percentage is probably lower now because of growing paganism in the Christian community in the US.**Emphasize that this is why we witness, to glorify God.

Psalm 79:9, Isaiah 43:25, and Daniel 9:19 teach the same truth: forgiveness glorifies God.In these passages what does forgiving sin do? Glorifies GodWhat does witnessing do? Glorifies God. How? 1) Gives us the opportunity to talk about Gods qualities building His reputation, 2) Gives God the opportunity to forgive sin building His reputation. The same: Glorifies God.*The last statistic come from the book The Way of the Master.**Just before the NEVER appears, say, Or are you like most Christians you never share your faith? In an article entitled The Missionary and His Witnessing Life that appears In the Journal of Evangelism and Missions on page 14 Ron Rogers writes: (Jesus) ministry involved at least three approaches to the witnessing life: evangelistic encounters with individuals, public proclamation, and the multiplication of His witnessing life through the training of His disciples. Alvin Reid, in his Introduction to Evangelism, noted that the four Gospels contain more than forty accounts of Jesus personal evangelism (1998, 33). Jesus witnessing encounters with individuals were many and varied.**Open this slide by asking, Many are cold toward evangelism and especially one-to-one evangelism.*The red border means this slide contains information to be memorized. Have the audience repeat these four steps out load, but not for memorization.A red border means this slide contains information to be memorized. Use hand signs to imbed these points in the audiences memory. Always repeat the hand signs 3 times when new information is being taught, and review often throughout the seminar.Bridge: With palms facing down pass one hand over another as a bridge over a river.FYI: The hand signs are for the learning process, not the presentation process when witnessing.*Another good bridge is Do you participate in charities. Most will say yes, then you can ask the Big Question.*On any of these be careful to limit the time spent on the secular, and get to the spiritual. Sufficient relationships giving you the foundation to witness are easy to establish and can be built in seconds.*The quote is from the book Upside Down: The Paradox of Servant Leadership. Acts 4:18-20) and grants boldness (cf. Acts 5:2). As the Spirit of truth (Jn 14:17) he normatively protects the testimony of Christ against oblivion (cf. Jn 14:26) and contamination (cf. Jn 16:13), reveals the very words appropriate for a specific situation (c. Lk 12:12), serves as advocate of the truth communicated (cf. Jn 16:7-11) and energizes the message so that it pierces peoples hearts (c. Acts 2:37). Besides, the Spirit is the one who furnishes supernatural objective evidence to confirm the spoken testimony (cf. Mk 16:17.18, Acts 4:13.16). It has been drummed into them since early childhood. TV, movies, teachers at school, even some pastors pillory us with this lie. We can perform in a way that leads others to conclude that we are good, but that is not Gods estimate, and He will certainly not use the opinion of others to judge us on Judgment Day.FYI:The essence of immorality is the tendency to make an exception of myself. ~Jane AddamsGod warned Israel of the disease of self-righteousness (Deuteronomy 9:4-6).It is clear what the problem is. Modern Christianity has degenerated into merely a means of self-improvement, self-esteem, and self-indulgence. Way of the Master (WM) page 186Instead of preaching the good news that sinners can be made righteous in Christ and escape the wrath to come, we have settled for a gospel that implies that Gods primary purpose in saving us is to unfold a wonderful plan for our lives: to solve our problems, make us happy in Christ, and rescue us from the hassles of this life. The Way of the Master, Kirk Cameron, page 11. . you will find that many of todays preachers fill their churches by teaching legitimate life-changing principles. However, although these principles are helpful for daily living, they fail to unmask the villains of sin and self-righteousness that keep vast numbers of false converts sitting in a fools paradise, comfortable In the pews, thinking they are friends with God when they are still His enemies. WM-17

As shown in Proverbs 20:6, this has been my (JAT) experience. I have asked scores of people this question, only well informed Christians or self-realized degenerates will say no. Most people think they are good and are going to heaven. Jesus did not agree. He said few would go to heaven.

The worlds religions are a vain attempt to reach God and make people feel good about themselves by doing good works. Christianity is unique in that it strips us of our self-righteousness. By exposing our thoroughly sinful nature, and causes us to see that our only hope is for God to reach down to us in mercy.Passages which I believe to teach Lordship salvation would include such passages as Matthew 28:18-20 Romans 14:7-9 2 Corinthians 5:13-15 Phil.1:21 1 Peter 4:1-5Luke 19:14,27 Matthew 11:29,30 Hebrews 5:9 Romans 2:6-11 Matthew 7:13,14,17-20*Tell the story from Mark 10:17-22. A young ruler came to Jesus calling Jesus good and asking how he could inherit eternal life. Click in the opening question.Notice two items: 1) He calls Jesus good, and 2) he wants Jesus to explain eternal acceptance by God.Jesus said that only God is good (Jesus may have wondered if this man realized Jesus was God.), and then Jesus deliberately misdirects the man. Jesus tells the man he needs to keep the 10Cs by not murdering, adulterating, stealing, lying, or disobeying his parents. The man said he had kept these laws since his youth. Should we believe him? Absolutely not. Rather it shows he was full of self-righteousness. No one has kept the Law since his youth. Jesus responds this way because the man made a bombastic statement about himself, and Jesus is using the 10Cs to prove to the man he is a sinner like everyone else. To convince the man of his sinfulness, Jesus appeals to the 1st Commandment by asking this man to give all his money to the poor and follow Jesus. If the man believed Jesus is good then he would obey Jesus as God. This the man was not willing to do. What was the problem? He had broken the first of the 10Cs. He was not righteous, therefore. He served money and not God. (Reiteration: Remember, he had called Jesus good. Jesus said only God was good. Thus, Jesus was indicating that He is God, and this man should put God before money by following Jesus and making Jesus his master. If Jesus was his master he would have obeyed Jesus. He would have given his money away and followed Jesus.)*Teach the hand sign for Challenge:Challenge (test): Draw question marks in the air with both index fingers; then direct the fingers of both hands forward with palms down. Have the audience repeat the question with you at least 3 times, then ask individuals in the audience to recite the Big Question and the Challenge question. Every one must memorize both. If they wish to soften the challenge-question, they may ask: May I challenge your sense of goodness?Explain that people will agree for you to challenge them because they really do believe that they are basically good. It has been drummed into them since early childhood. TV, movies, teachers at school, even some pastors pillory us with this lie. We can perform in a way that leads others to conclude that we are good, but that is not Gods estimate, and He will certainly not use the opinion of others to judge us on Judgment Day.Luke 15:31-2 shows that self-righteousness plagued mankind in Jesus day also. Those convinced of their own goodness can not be helped. In the pamphlet entitled Reasons Why Some Will Not Come to Christ, (Pensacola, FL: Chapel Library, n.d.), Albert N. Martin wrote on pages 2 and 3: What was true of the Pharisees two thousand years ago is true of many today: they dont even know they are sick. They are unaware that they have any moral or spiritual disease. They dont care to go to the great Physician of their souls because they dont think there is anything wrong. But such indifference to the real condition of your soul is inexcusable, and it is inexcusable because of the clear testimony of the Bible and of your conscience. (See Isaiah 53:6 and Romans 3:10.)*We are using the very tactic Jesus used when witnessing one-to-one.I (JAT) have asked scores of people all over the world this question, only well informed Christians or self-realized degenerates will say no.S.R. = self-righteousness.*Teach a hand sign for Commandments. Do the hand gesture with the audience at least three times.Commandments: Hold up the left open hand, palm facing right; place the index finger of the right hand against the left palm as though writing. The left hand is a tablet and the right index finger is Gods finger writing the commandments. With the index finger that represents Gods finger count down the 4 Commandments we will use by tapping the 4 upright fingers on the other hand, saying lying, stealing, adulterating, and murdering. These are Commandments 9,8,7, and 6.Note: the hand gestures for the three terms on this page make the right hand move to the left.*Paul refers to the Law as the law of righteousness in Romans 9:31; in other words, if one could keep the law they would be righteous. The proof that the 10 Commandments are still Gods standard for right and wrong, or good and bad is found in 1 Timothy 1:8-11.The giving of the 10 Commandments is written in Exodus 20, and in Deuteronomy 4:13 the 10 Commandments are referred to as the Law. To understand these facts helps one to properly interpret the New Testament.*You can explain that most use only 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 to define the gospel as the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, but in 1 Timothy 1 Paul broadens the gospel to include the Law. That does not mean one has to keep the Law to be saved. It means people need to be exposed to the Law to reveal their sin and see the need for a rescuer from the Laws curse. This is explained later in the seminar.*Using the 10 Commandments to convince people they are sinners and need a savior is biblical. Stephen used it in Acts 7:53, Paul in Romans 3:19-20 and with Felix and Acts 24:24-25, Jesus with the woman at the well in John 4:17-18 (7th Commandment) and 4:24 (1st Commandment), Peter in Acts 2:23 (murdering Jesus), and James in James 2:10. In Luke 10:24-25 and 18:18-22, Jesus used the 10 Commandments to bring conviction of sin. Jesus made the issue one of righteousness rather than happiness (Matthew 5:20). He used the 10Cs to show sinners the righteous standard of God (Matthew 5:17-37).*The quote by John Wesley is from the book School of Biblical Evangelism, page 21.*Usually the 10Cs are broken into two parts after #4. This is untenable because according to Philo ancient Rabbis broke the Ten Commandments into pentads for the following reasons:1. only the first five Commands have explanations that answer the question why (the explanation for #1 precedes it whereas in the next four the explanations follow the commands).2. only the first five use the phrase the Lord your God.3. the last five are short, comparatively, and are separated by shewas (Hebrew vowel point).*Paul, following Jesus explanation of the 10 Commandments, applies four of the last five of the 10 Commandments as a way to love man (Romans 13:8-10). Of these last five, Paul does not mention the 9th, bearing false witness.

The 5th C is part of the first four because by obeying our parents we learn to love God. Jesus taught that obedience is a way to demonstrate love for God (John 14:21).*Explain briefly how the 10Cs teach us to love God and man.Love God:#1 Value Gods uniqueness (He is the only God. See Deuteronomy 4:34 for the proof God gave to Israel in Egypt that He is the only God. The command is repeated in Deuteronomy 5:7.)#2 Value Gods personhood (He is spirit. See Deuteronomy 4:15-19, 23 for a clear explanation for the import of this 2nd Commandment. The command is repeated in Deuteronomy 5:8-10. The command has a curse attached to it which will bring punishment to subsequent generations.)#3 Value Gods reputation (Name is a synonym for reputation. It is very degrading to attach Gods name to something you reject or despise. The command is repeated in Deuteronomy 5:11 with an explanation: The idea here is not cursing or profanity in the modern sense of these terms but rather the use of the divine Name for unholy, mundane purposes, that is, for meaningless and empty ends. In ancient Israel this would include using the Lords name as a witness in vows one did not intend to keep. (NetBible) This would include blasphemy. The command has a curse attached to it given in this passage and in Exodus 20.)#4 Value Gods deliverances (The Sabbath commemorated the previous weeks work, and then later it was used by the Israelites to celebrate Gods deliverance from Egyptian slavery. The command is repeated in Deuteronomy 5:12-15.)#5 Value Gods authority (Parents represent Gods authority. The command is repeated in Deuteronomy 5:16, and it is the only command that has a reward attached to it in the listing here in Deuteronomy and in Exodus 20.)Love Man:#1 Value a mans life. (The command is repeated in Deuteronomy 5:17. Traditionally kill (so KJV, ASV, RSV, NAB). The verb here is generic for homicide but in the OT both killing in war and capital punishment were permitted and even commanded (Deut 13:5, 9; 20:13, 16-17), so the technical meaning here is murder. NETBible)#2 Value a mans marriage. (The command is repeated in Deuteronomy 5:18.)#3 Value a mans property. (The command is repeated in Deuteronomy 5:19.)#4 Value a mans reputation. (The command is repeated in Deuteronomy 5:20.)#5 Value a mans well-being. (A man has the right to possess animals, a house, and a wife as sources of contentment and well-being without people diminishing it through covetuousness. The command is repeated in Deuteronomy 5:20.)*In Romans 7:7-13 Paul teaches that the Law (10Cs) was designed by God to expose human sin (though the commandment sin would become utterly sinful, 13).*This slide is optional. Thats why it is hidden. If you have ample time use it.To blaspheme means to degrade. This is a horrendous sin and carries a special penalty (Exodus 20:7).*Matthew 5:28 is the statement by Jesus.*Matthew 5:21-22 is the statement by Jesus, and the Bibles statement is in 1 John 3:15. Also, in Deuteronomy 4:42 murder and hatred are connected.*This is an optional slide. That is why it is usually hidden. If they think they have never been greedy then ask them if they have ever overeaten, or stayed in bed when they werent really tired.*Galatians 3:10 is a quote from Deuteronomy 27:26.**Teach the hand sign for calculate.Calculate: Using the same hand gestures as with Commandments, use the vertical left hand for a tablet and the index finger as a punch to operate a hand-held calculator, and say Calculate.Of course, the correct answer is everyone would fail. Explain, however, that half will say they would fail and the rest think God would pass them and let them into Heaven. Two reasons are typically given by people as to why God would pass them. (Go to the next slide.)*When witnessing these are the three excuses or escapes I (JAT) hear people make again and again.About half will say they would fail, but the other half think they will pass and they will usually use one of two excuses. Most people are cold toward Gods perspective of them. For example, when someone says, I will be good from now on. You say to them (or ask the audience what should be said in return), But what about your past violations of the Law. You have already admitted that you are a law breaker. Those past violations have to be paid for. You will go to Hell for them. (This may be the first time you will mention Hell, but that is okay. Jesus mentioned it again and again.)When someone says, God is love. He will forgive me. You say (or ask the audience what the answer should be), No, He wont. He will not forgive you just because you ask Him to. Suppose you steal a car and as the judge is about to sentence you with a big fine and perhaps time in prison, you say to the judge, O, Your Honor, it was my first offense, and I promise to never steal another car. Please forgive me and let me go. Will the judge forgive you and let you go? No. Why not? To let you go will ruin his reputation. (The person you stole the car from will hate the judge.) And, If the judge keeps letting criminals go free he will lose his job. God is much more strict than a human judge. He will not forgive you just because you ask Him to. Several times people have responded with, I dont believe what you are saying is true, or, I dont believe the Bible is accurate. Your response is, What you believe does not determine truth, and get back to going through the material.*Teach the hand sign for condemn.Condemn: Strike one fist into the palm of the other.*Read the text in the box to the left and conclude by reading the bright HELL. Then recite the following paragraph:Jesus told a story about a very rich man and a very poor man. When both died the poor man went to a place called Abrahams Bosom (a place of bliss), and the rich man went to Hell, and there he was in agony. He cried out to Abraham to send Lazarus to place just a drop of water on the tip of his tongue. (His despicable arrogance continues even in Hell. He wants Lazarus, a poor man, to serve him!) Abraham said he couldnt do it because there was a great chasm between them. Then the rich man asked Abraham to resurrect Lazarus and send him to his brothers to warn them about Hell. Abraham said, No. They can read what Moses wrote and what is repeated in the Prophets. Now click in the right panel.*Moses gave the Law, which includes the 10Cs, and the prophets show how the Law was obeyed and disobeyed by the Jews in the Old Testament.Read these quotes that come from the book The Way of the Master, by Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort, pages 118 and 120 respectively.

It is the straightedge of the Law that shows us how crooked we are (J.B. Phillips), on page 42 of the book by Dayton, Edward R., and Ted W. Engstrom. Strategy for Living. Glendale, CA: Regal Books, 1976.

*Occasionally someone will scoff at the Bibles view of Hell thinking that they will be able to party with their friends. Nothing could be further from the truth. You can say, Even if your friends are there there will be no camaraderie. Jesus described Hell (or at least its conditions) as eternal (Matthew 25:41 and 46). You never get out. He said it was dark like darkness you have never experienced (Matthew 8:12; 22:13; 25:30; 2 Peter 2:17 and Jude 7,12-13). So, even if you were next to your best friend you could not see each other. People in Hell are embarrassed (Daniel 12:2) that they made the wrong choice, and therefore would not want to talk to anyone. Finally, Hell is excruciating pain as though worms were chewing on burning flesh (Matthew 24:51; 25:46, Mark 9:43-48, and Luke 3:17. Also see Matthew 5:22; Mark 9:48; Luke 16:23-24,28 and Jude 7.) The worst of course is to be separated from God (2 Thessalonians 1:9). You do not want to go there.*This quote comes from the book The Way of the Master, by Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort, page 55.
