Day One: Depart Kigali after breakfast for Lake Kivu in the Western Province. En-route visit the Pfunda Tea Estate. After lunch Gisenyi offers beaches, boat rides, 1918 First World War Graves, tours of Bralirwa Brewery, sundowners on the lake’s shores and traditional night fishing trips with local fisherman. Overnight in Gisenyi. Day Two: A number of options are available: Drive part of the spectacular Congo Nile trail; bird watch in Gishwati Forest; go caving in volcanic rock caves; take a village tour in Musanze; visit Roz Carr’s flower farm. We visit King Rudahigwa’s 1931 Palace Museum, standing today as it did when the King was in residence along with the ‘Inyambo’, traditional Rwandan cows known for their impressive long horns, and then stop off at either the only Basilica in Rwanda, headquarters of the Catholic Church in Kabgayi OR Save, the109 year old church constructed by the first missionaries in 1905. In the afternoon we visit the Ethnographic Museum in Huye housing one of Africa’s finest ethnographic collections. Overnight near Nyungwe National Park. Day Two: After breakfast we start the morning at the Uwinka Visitor Centre where you can select one of a number of tours: a Chimp trek; the world-class Canopy Walkway; bird watching or a hike to a waterfall. In the afternoon we stop off at a tea plantation for a tour. En-route back to Kigali we visit Azizi Life – a social enterprise shopping outlet with beautiful crafts made by the fair trade Azizi Life artisans. Day One: Drive through the Northern Province to Ruhengeri with its stunning backdrop of five volcanic mountains and the beautiful twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo. The deep blue waters surrounded by steep hills and tall waterfalls with the outlines of the nearby Virunga Volcanoes provide a spectacular backdrop. Take a traditional dug-out canoe ride to an island on the lake or bird-watch. In the evening enjoy cultural Intore (warrier) dancing and overnight in Musanze. Day Two: Early morning Gorilla / Golden Monkey trek; followed by lunch. In the afternoon there are two choices: Either visit the Rosamond Carr Farm OR Enjoy a local village tour. Head back to Kigali in the late afternoon. KIGALI CITY: HALF-DAY TOUR OPTIONS FULL DAY TOUR PROGRAMMES ONE NIGHT / TWO DAYS TOUR OPTIONS PRE & POST TOURS Genocide Memorial: The most comprehensive memorial and education centre in the country and is also the burial site of two hundred and fifty thou- sand victims of the genocide. Natural History Museum: Dr. Richard Kandt was the German explorer who found- ed Kigali in 1908 as the centre for administration for German East Africa. In 2008 his historic residence was converted into the Natural History Museum which houses some really interesting information on Rwanda’s flora, fauna, geology and biological history, along with a stuffed skeleton of a massive crocodile that had been terrorizing a village in Lake Muhaze. A pair of shoes was found in its stomach. Camp Kigali: Museum in Kigali City at the site of the massacre of 10 Belgian UN Blue Beret at the onset of Genocide. The ten stone pillars memorialize the ten soldiers killed. A morning (or afternoon) of art, handcraft and fashion! There is an array of wonderful offerings of contemporary art studios; hand- craft production centres where you can watch Rwandan women weaving and beading – you will be lost for choice in the many fabulous products on offer to purchase. Your tour in Kigali city hub will be tailor made to suit your choice and can include: Gahaya Links basket weaving studio; Inema Arts Centre; Caplaki Craft Village; Uburanga Art Centre; Ikaze Showroom; Dancing Pots; Yego Arts; Gakinjiro Furniture Market; Umutako Iwacu. Included is a stop off at one of Kigali’s great coffee shops for a signature Rwandan coffee or tea. Tracking the endangered mountain gorilla on the slopes of the Virunga volcano in Volcanoes National Park is a magical experience. Enjoy a Gorilla trek through mountain forests or a Golden Monkey trek through bamboo forests during the morning followed by lunch in Musanze. In the afternoon we have two choices: A walk through Iby’Iwacu cultural village – a community based tourism product visiting a traditional healer, black smithery; grind millet and ride a wooden bicycle through the village OR A visit to the famous Rosamond Carr flower farm. Roz Carr (1912-2006) founded the Imbabazi Orphanage in 1994, caring for more than 400 children after the genocide (who are now all adults). Enjoy the homestead and her flowers with a cup of tea/coffee as you watch a local cultural dance. Return to Kigali by late afternoon. AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK From US$ 225 An early morning departure for a safari in the Eastern Province. Akagera is the largest national park in Rwanda comprising savannah, mountain and swamp habitats. The Akagera River feeds a labyrinth of lakes and papyrus swamps making it the largest protected wetland in Central Africa with one of the highest concentrations of hippopotamus in Africa. Enjoy big game as well as one of the best bird-watching sites in Rwanda on this full day safari tour. We will stop for lunch at Ruzizi Lodge in the riverine forest on the edge of Lake Ihema, and return to Kigali by late afternoon.
