Traditional / typical NGOs...Two week volunteer trip, administered vaccines and other services

Mission: “Equipping the international body of Christ to serve the poor and underprivileged through education, experience and empowerment....”Vision: “We will make Jesus known in all the earth...producing an eternal movement in Christ Jesus.”

“In the years before it (the earthquake of 2010), we saw that Haiti had become a veritable “Republic of NGOs”, home to a proliferation of goodwill that did little or nothing to strengthen the public sector.”

“...the dysfunctional system of humanitarian aid that, good intentions aside, has become another obstacle to Haiti's recovery and sovereignty.”

- Paul Farmer

“The donors are making us lazy. The Japanese volunteers are doing what the city council used to do – mending potholes. It is better for us to have potholes. We would be forced to do something about them. We'd have to think for ourselves.”

- Rodger Chongwe, Malawi citizen

Page 17: Pre-Med AMSA Meeting Notes

“They're entrenched. Charity is a business. They don't even think about leaving. They've created imbalances in food, artificial shortages, sudden surpluses from abroad that undercut the local farmers. They make more problems than they solve.”

“The donors must fuck off...Write that down! Use my name!” - Rodger Chongwe, Malawi citizen
