Pre-FIA2014 WorkshopWhy interoperability and standards

matter Stephanie Parker

In 2009, Just Eat operated in just 4 countries. Now operates in 13 countries, including Brazil and India.Peaky weekend demands & slow weekday afternoons.IT Priorities: flexibility & agility. Let engineering team focus on strategic & value-added IT projects (not software patching, fixing servers & IT performance).Stepwise approach to cloud adoption:

Basic services, e.g. email, company document sharing.Public cloud – beta production for smaller, non-critical applicationsPublic cloud in full production (early 2013)UK is the most lucrative e-commerce service: last to migrate

A User’s Story: Why, what & when

“But doesn’t the lack of standards and interoperability concern you?”“It does. But we have built the architecture in such a way that it will be easy for us to swap out of our current approach should a newer, better tool become available”.

Concerns?

A long-term strategy and cautious approach. Moving to the cloud is ultimately a business decision so thinking strategically is important

Just Eat, CTO

There is no jungle of standards so let’s focus on widespread adoption while embracing heterogeneity where this makes sense.

Freedom in the Cloud

Consumer concerns: • Lack of control• Lack of standards• Lack of

integration• Lack of RoI on

TCO

GigaOM Consumer survey 2013

Consumers want «pain relief» & freedom in the cloud• Monitoring, management, transparency• Interoperability and portability• Integration, open APIs, open source• Business cases & proof

Issues that might prevent or slow down adoption• Provider language is complex and/or misleading• Hybrid IT environment making interoperability and portability

more important

Standards & Standardisation Handbook

«Standards are one of the most important means to bring new technologies to market. Standards provide a bridge connecting

research to industry»

Standards & interoperability important for the Digital Agenda for Europe “I invite all stakeholders to use it as a reference”, Neelie Kroes, VP of the EC

“The SIENA Roadmap demonstrates that Europe has a huge potential for innovation”, Mario Campolargo, Net Futures, DG CONNECT, Director

CloudWATCH focus on interoperability & standards

Leveraging considerable expertise in standards development, implementation and testing over the past decade. Key role in shaping standards roadmaps for cloud computing.

CloudWATCH will provide a portfolio of European and international use cases covering technical requirements, policy and legal requirements, including Service Level Agreement management.CloudWATCH will develop common standard profiles and testing around federation of cloud services.

Europe: over a decade of standards development and implementation through R&D for distributed computing infrastructures

Why is this important?

A profile on a standard clarifies in an unambiguous way how a standard has to be interpreted and implemented based on a specific use case. This overcomes ambiguities in specifications and the lack of real interoperability across different interfaces.
