Go over homework
1. Have them work on the do now while I grade their homework2. Discuss any mistakes or difficulties they had.3. Go over the do now EXTENSIVELY because this shows whether or not theyre able to

Instruction on Adding like terms
1. Warm up:a. Pretend youre a zoo keeper. You have a pen full of 5 tigers and a separate pen full
of 8 elephants. You get a shipment in of (4tigers+3elephants). How should we
describe how many animals youre taking care of right now?
b. Pretend youre an astronaut and youve gone a new planet. You decide to call theanimals there by letters instead of names because heck, youre not a biologist and
you dont want to deal with fancy shmancy Latin. You capture s and s and sand lock them in a pen to study them. The next day, you find s, and s, butunfortunately, s have escaped. Write an expression to represent how manyanimals youre taking care of now.
2. Go over the vocab:a. Term: Any separate clump of numbers and variables all multiplied together.b. Coefficient: a number in front of a term that indicates how many of that term
there are (yes, you think of it right now as multiplication, but discuss what
multiplication is- its repeated addition.)
c. Like term: When terms have the same variable or same combination of variables.3. If like terms are added (or subtracted) together, we can just count up how many there
are and turn them into a new term:
a. b. c.
d.
4. If there are different types of terms being added together, mark the like terms byputting different symbols around them. Make sure to include the sign in front of each
like term.

Solving multistep equations
1. Explain that now they know both combining like terms and the distributive property,we can solve much more complex equations.
2. Just before you solve an equation simplify both sides as much as possible bya. Distributing to get rid of parenthesesb. Combining like terms.
3. Do the example problems with them.Like Terms (a math card game)
Like Termsis a game where the objective is to collect as many groups of 3 or 4 like terms as possible
and then being the first person with no cards left in their hand. The deck contains 7 groups of cards: ,a to , to and so on for , , , and 1-9.
How to Play
1. Each player gets 7 cards.2. There is a draw pile face down and discard pile face up.3. Players try to make groups of 3 or 4 cards that are like termsfor example, if you had
, and in your hand, you would place those cards face up on the table in front of you.4. For each turn, the player takes 1 card from the draw pile, makes their play (if they can) and throws
one card away.
5. The object of the game is to be the first with no cards left. What is a group of Like Terms?
Cards with only gowith other cards, but not with cards. cards only go withother cards, and only with othercards. The same goes for cards, and cards. The number cards without a square root can only be added to each other
Like terms (you CAN play): , and Unlike terms (CAN'T play): , 6, and 5
How do you figure out your score?
The winner gets to add every group they put down on the table. For example, if you had:
7 6 2 8 5 3 2 6
2 4 1 2 3
You would add up each group for your score: 15 + 16 + 9 + 7 + 6
The rest of the players will add whatever they put on the table, but then subtract everything still left in
their hand. For example, if you had:
On table: In your hand:
