Worship Gathering December 17, 2017

Whether you are a first-time guest or have been gathering with us for some time, we are glad you are with us today. We are a family of Jesus-followers who gather each week to worship God and scatter each week to reflect God. Thanks so much for worshipping with us. Please join us in reflecting God throughout the week.

Please complete a blue guest card from the back of the worship center seats and place it in the offering tray as it passes you. We would love to be able to contact you to say hello. If you would like to know more about being a Jesus-follower, being baptized, or becoming a part of Lafayette, you are invited to meet with those in the prayer room just after the sermon. Turn left as you exit the back of the worship center; the prayer room is on the right just past the kitchen.

1 Cider Sunday Following our worship gathering this morning, all are invited to stick around and enjoy hot cider, coffee, and breakfast foods. This is a great time slow down and take a moment to visit.

2 Angel Tree Thanks to all who have taken angels from the Angel Tree in the foyer. Did you remember to bring your wrapped gift today? If not, please make arrangements today with Sally Blackburn. These gifts will bless students selected by counselors at Selvidge Middle School, Woerther Elementary School, and Ballwin Elementary School.

3 Lamenting With God Studying the Bible is important to us at Lafayette. We are taking a break from classes for the next couple of weeks. Our classes will resume on January 7. We are in the home stretch of our class on the lament psalms. The Sundays in January will focus on lamenting during times of life disappointments, illness, and conflict. And for those wondering, the panel will tackle those disturbing imprecatory psalms.

4 Prayer emphasis Prayer is an important part of life at Lafayette. Thanks to all who have participated in our prayer emphasis over the last several weeks—the day of prayer, the prayer huddles, and the 24 hours of prayer. All are encouraged to continue praying the Prayer of the Week that is published weekly in The Scattering and using the prayer list on page 4 of this bulletin as resources for daily prayer.

5 Small groups Small goup ministry has been an important ministry at Lafayette for many years. We want to hear from you about your small group preferences for January-May 2018. If you have not yet turned in your small groups preference listening tool, please do so today.

It’s like we step onto a time warp on November and are tossed out of it in January. The days just fly by. We have shopping to do and so we wade into crowded retail stores or we sit in our recliners and shop online. We have office parties and school parties and neighborhood parties and church parties. Lines are longer than normal. Traffic is heavier. Where do the weeks go? In all the hustle and bustle we have to slow down long enough to remember Jesus. After all, the purpose of this season is to remember the incarnation. — Bob Clark

Reminders for the holiday season This season from Thanksgiving through the new year can be a most joyful time for many people. But no matter how joyful we might be, we need to remember that for some this season is full of heartache and pain.

Some families are heading into the holidays without a loved one who has died. Some are facing situations that can best be labeled as toxic and are missing estranged family members. Some families are dealing with members who are suffering from mental health issues that can be exacerbated during the holidays. Still other families experience tension because one or more family members suffer with addiction to alcohol or drugs. Additionally, there are families that are going through financial difficulties that can cause severe strain on family relationships. And let’s not forget that there are some people who are lonely and wish they had some family, even a dysfunctional one, to be with during this season.

So please remember those who may be hurting during the holidays. Take time to listen. Make a phone call. And by all means. Take time to pray for those who have dreaded the approach of the holidays and are now just trying to hang on until this difficult time passes. Holiday schedule Don’t forget that meeting times and office hours vary from the norm during this holiday season. Please remember that if you experience a crisis, you are welcome to call your church leaders at any time, even during the holidays.
