Seemed obvious and odd at thesame time when I heard it the firsttime. John Jackson was explainingto the church that all of the planswere made for the program thatwas to come; now all we needed todo was “work the work.” This is sotrue of so many things in our lives.
When a student meets with theiradvisor the first time to set out theirplan for graduation, it all seemsorderly, fresh and exciting, but ofcourse it takes four years (more forsome) to “work the work.” Whenyou purchase the kit that includesall the pieces and the plans tobuild that table for your patio, it is all right there in front of youand all you need to do to enjoy it is“work the work.” When you pickthe names, read the books, supplythe nursery and exit the hospitalwith your newborn, to raise it to be a productive Christian adult allyou can do is “work the work.”
Marion First United MethodistChurch has planned for nearly tenyears to come to this moment. Many meetings, much discussion,a handful of votes and now a planis in hand and to accomplish thisgreat thing for our God, and all weneed to do is “work the work.” Thework of which I speak is the BUILDcampaign and your response to it.
By now, you have come tounderstand that we are in the midstof the campaign that will shortlybe complete, and we will moveforward into God’s future accord-ing the plan to work His nextwork. You have received manymaterials and most recently the
“Reflections” booklet and I praythat you will read through it andthat it will be an asset for you asyou work the work of discerninghow you desire to represent your-self to God through this campaign.
As you consider your responseor consider amending your origi-nal response, please add this toyour thinking. One of the reasonsthat you love Marion First UnitedMethodist Church is that we are asquare shouldered church whereeveryone is important. During ourlast new members’ class one of ourfolks exclaimed “one of the thingsthat brought us here is that every-one is expected to do their part andeveryone is an important part inwhat is going on.” That is exactlywho we are.
The joy of being a square shoul-dered church is that everyone has a part in it. One of my friends pastored a church where Cliff (lastname withheld) contributed a bitover 50% of the budget – in fact,he would ask the church treasurerwhen giving went up how much hehad to increase his giving to stayin that spot. His agenda was most-ly good – he wanted his churchafloat – and – he wanted everythingand I mean everything that hap-pened in the church to pass throughhim. It is true that monetarily wehave some folks that are part of ourchurch that have significant assetsand their faith has moved them tocontribute gifts beyond the ability ofmany of us – but none come closethe 50% range and I am certainnone desire to have such control.
The joy of this kind of squareshouldered church is then that inthis generation, the last one andthe one to come everyone has apart and contributing their part isnecessary. The concern of courseis the reverse, everyone in thisgeneration, the last and the nexthas a part and it is necessary. Theprayer of the leadership of thechurch is that in each generationwe will be faithful to the purposeof the church (making disciples ofJesus for the transformation of theworld) and not simply our personalpreferences.
In the last few weeks of theBUILD campaign, please go toyour knees and pray. Pray forGod’s church to succeed, pray forthe campaign to succeed, pray formembers like yourself to reachtowards heroic places in commit-ment of resources and in yourmoments of discernment seek theholiness of God in your giving.
Lastly, consider two scriptures,Paul writes in 1 Timothy 6:7 “Webrought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.” and in 2 Corinthians9:7 “Each of you should give whatyou have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or undercompulsion, for God loves acheerful giver.”
Work the work of allowing those scriptures, the testimonies of others and your prayers to guideyou and the work of our campaignwill be “worked.”

Renewal Leave Scheduled for Pastor MorganThe Staff Parish Relations approved a 4 week renewal leave on January 20, 2014 forPastor Mike Morgan. The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church requiresthe Staff Parish Relations Committee to: “To consult with the pastor and staff concerningcontinuing education and spiritual renewal…..” Further, the Book of Discipline says: “A clergy member’s continuing education and spiritual growth program should includesuch leaves at least one week each year and at least one month during one year of everyquadrennium. Such leaves shall not be considered as part of the ministers’ vacations andshall be planned in consultation with their charges or other agencies to which they areappointed as well as the bishop, district superintendent, and annual conference continu-ing education committee.”
In his thirty years of Pastoral ministry, Rev. Morgan has never taken a renewal leave and for the first time has requested one. Mike’s renewal leave will be March 10-April 7,2014. His plan includes spending the weekends with pastors, staff members and churchleaders at four United Methodist churches (one each in Missouri, Illinois, Michigan andColorado) who have successfully navigated through transitioning from downtown to multiple site ministries. His goal is to be mentored in the process that stands before us atMarion Methodist, our goal is to renew him and have an energized leader for the same.
During his renewal leave the staff of the church will of course continue the course of thechurch as we pursue the fulfilment of our mission.

Palms from UnitedMethodist Commission on Relief (UMCOR)Each year Americans purchase as much as $4.5 million worth of palms — mostly forPalm Sunday services. Through conventionalharvesting, very little of the money goesback to the harvesters.Through Eco-Palms, harvesters are paid
a fair price and harvesting is done in a waythat protects the environment and health of the plant.
