Meet the clergy and staff team: Sarah Saxon

Hello! I am Sarah, and I have been the Youth Minister at St. Peter's for 5 years. I am married to Paul, and we have a one year old daughter.

In what ways has lockdown affected you? I have really missed being able to see and spend time in person with our amazing young people, and the youth team leaders - but have had lots of fun on our online sessions! It's been exhausting working and parenting a toddler at home,

but it has also been incredible to be together and eat together every single day. I have especially missed days hiking in the mountains, but am making up for that now!

What have you learned about yourself during this time? That I can't control very much in this life – and am still on a journey of accepting and embracing that! Also I have been challenged to live a life of more simplicity, such as, making do with one food shop a week and trying to keep one day a week with nothing scheduled in the diary.

Tell us about a film, book or song that has encouraged you during lockdown: ‘Honesty over Silence’ by Patrick Regan - a brilliant book about trusting God through painful times, depression and anxiety. It doesn't provide any answers or a 5 step plan, but just reminds us that God loves us and that it's okay not to be okay.

Lahore Link Pandemic Appeal Christians in Lahore face real challenges and require our help. Following a plague of locusts and the impact of coronavirus, the Christian community are suffering from food shortages as well as illness. Often they find that they do not receive aid from the government and rely on the support of other Christians in time of need. Children are seeing their education curtailed, and Christian schools are on the verge of collapse due to the lack of finance because all Christian schools in Pakistan are fee paying, so in lockdown they receive no funding at all. Manchester Diocese is supporting us in raising funds to help our brothers and sisters who are in need in Lahore Diocese. Is God asking you to help? Go to the homepage of www.stpetersparish.info and scroll down to ‘Manchester - Lahore - Pandemic Appeal’ for more info, and to support this cause.

Prayer for our Mission Partners Our mission partners, here and around the world, continue to need our prayers and support at this challenging time. Give thanks that all our mission partners are in good health in body, mind and spirit, and ask God to continue to provide for them in these interesting times. Thank you. An update and more details will follow next week.

Face Coverings In line with the latest Church of England guidance, we now strongly advise that face coverings are worn by all those attending Sunday Services or praying in church, remembering that they are mainly intended to protect other people, not the wearer, from Covid-19 and that they are not a replacement for physical distancing and regular hand washing.

It is with great sadness that we have to inform you that Tony Rea and Norman Hindley have passed away. Please keep Barbara and Ruby and all their families and friends in your prayers at this difficult time.

An update on the re-opening of our church buildings As the government continue to relax many of the coronavirus restrictions in place (including regarding the re-opening of church buildings), we remind you that St. Peter’s Halliwell also operates under the Church of England and Manchester Diocese guidelines. These require the completion of risk assessments for each of our church buildings before we can consider re-opening (including assessing the numbers of people we can safely accommodate within services/other activities in each building). The safety of our church family and visitors to our buildings remains our absolute priority. Please note, these assessments are being carried out across our Parish as the initial step in a carefully formatted re-opening process for our buildings.

Our parish live-streamed service continues on Sunday mornings at 10.30am and will do so for the foreseeable future. Our said service of Evening Prayer (with organ music, no singing) continues to be held at 4pm in St. Peter’s Church each Sunday. A copy of the Risk Assessment for the 4pm service (approved by PCC) is available on our website. Only a very limited number of people are allowed in the building due to social distancing regulations and ensuring that the building is COVID-19 secure. Therefore, booking in advance is essential for Evening Prayer so please book on-line at www.stpetersparish.info/book but, if you can’t get access to the internet, contact the office ([email protected] or 0800 954 0781).

During the summer break there will be the opportunity to meet for an informal drink and chat for those that would like to. On Thursdays 30th July, 6th and 13th August you are invited by Steph Mawhinney to drop in to 146a Markland Hill Lane, BL1 5NZ for a (socially distanced) brew in the garden - sheltering in the open garage if necessary! - between 2pm - 3pm. All are welcome.

Individual private prayer These sessions on Wednesday evenings, 7.30—9pm in St. Peter’s Church, will be taking a break during August. The last session before the break is on Wednesday 29th July. All are welcome.
