A Daily Prayer to St. Joseph In the Apostolic Letter “Patris corde” Pope Francis
notes how, “Every day, for over forty years, following
Lauds [Morning Prayer]” he has “recited a prayer to
Saint Joseph taken from a nineteenth-century French
prayer book of the Congregation of the Sisters of Jesus
and Mary.” This prayer, he says, expresses devotion
and trust, and even poses a certain challenge to Saint
Joseph,” on account of its closing words: “My beloved
father, all my trust is in you. Let it not be said that I
invoked you in vain, and since you can do everything
with Jesus and Mary, show me that your goodness is
as great as your power.” At the conclusion of his
Letter, he adds another prayer to St Joseph, which he
encourages all of us to pray together:
Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer,
Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
To you God entrusted his only Son;
in you Mary placed her trust;
with you Christ became man.
Blessed Joseph, to us too,
show yourself a father
and guide us in the path of life.
Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage,
and defend us from every evil. Amen.
Dynamic Catholic, Alive! – Repentance
The message we hear from the Gospel reading today is
one that we must hear again and again: repent and
believe the good news. This is the constant task of the
faithful Christian, to seek to grow in virtue and root
out sinfulness. The authentic witness of a disciple
who has truly repented of his sins can work wonders in
the cause of evangelization. We love conversion
stories of the saints and people we know in our own
lives today. One who has repented and has chosen to
live for Christ alone provides an extraordinary
example for us who want to be better evangelists.

Servant of God Brother
Juniper
Franciscan (d. 1258)
Brother Juniper was one of the
original companions of St.
Francis and “a man of such
unshakeable humility, patience,
and self-contempt, that the rising waves of temptation and
tribulation could not move him.” Brother Juniper evidently
attained such a degree of holiness that he was quite
indifferent to the opinion or regard of others. This was
fortunate, since “he was considered stupid and foolish by
those who did not know how perfect he was.”
Apart from the stories in his brief “Life,” little is known
of his biography. In these stories, he appears to function as
a kind of living parable. Francis and his followers were
regarded by the world as “fools for Christ.” Just so, the
exasperating foolishness of Juniper served among the friars
as a standard by which to measure their own compromise
with the wisdom of the world.
Over and over, Juniper tested the patience of his
brothers. At the sight of the poor he was filled with such
compassion that he would hand them his garments or rip
off a sleeve or a cowl to give them. “When poor people
came to Brother Juniper to beg, the friars used to take and
hide the things they wanted to keep.”
In each case, however, Juniper’s foolishness ultimately
bore a lesson in charity, faith, or humility. He died in
Rome in 1258. His feast is January 29.
“My Brothers, if only I had a great forest of such
junipers.” —St. Francis on Brother Juniper

Time
Jan 31, 2021 07:00 PM in Central Time (US and
Canada)
Gracious Lord, we pray for all the members of your
holy Church, that all may abide in you and you in
them, that they may be one in your love and bear
much fruit. We also pray for the world, that all may
come to believe in your love for them by the fruit of
our witness. We know that our divisions are a source
of scandal to your world, and we know that in love we
are called to unite as one in the vine and branches.
The vine is our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son. We are
meant to be his branches. Help us we pray, to love, to
forgive, to seek justice and to be your prophetic voice
in the world. May your grace effect growth of good
fruit among us, that our world may realize peace. We
ask all this in the name of Jesus, your Son and in the
power of the Holy Spirit, One God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
