Flexible Scheduling= an open schedule must be maintained. Classes cannot be scheduled in the library media center to provide teacher release or preparation time. Students and teachers must be able to come to the center throughout the day to use information sources, to read for pleasure, and to meet and work with other students and teachers. Planning between the library media specialist and the classroom teacher, which encourages both scheduled and informal visits, is the catalyst that makes this integrated library program work.

CDA= Communications Decency Act= The first notable attempt by the United States Congress to regulate pornographic material on the Internet. 1996 It attempted to regulate both indecency (when available to children) and obscenity in cyberspace. Dewey Decimal System= attempts to organize all knowledge into ten main classes. The ten main classes are each further subdivided into ten divisions, and each division into ten sections, giving ten main classes, 100 divisions and 1000 sections. DDC's advantage in using decimals for its categories allows it to be both purely numerical and infinitely hierarchical. Works are classified principally by subject, with extensions for subject relationships, place, time or type of material, producing classification numbers of at least three digits but otherwise of indeterminate length with a decimal point before the fourth digit, where present. Books are placed on the shelf in increasing numerical order of the decimal number, e.g. 050, 220, 330, 330.973, 331. When two books have the same classification number the second line of the call number (usually the first letter or letters of the author's last name, the title if there is no identifiable author) is placed in alphabetical order. he DDC has a number for all books, including fiction: American fiction is classified in 813. The system is made up of ten main classes or categories, each divided into ten secondary classes or subcategories, each having ten subdivisions.

Tinker vs. Des Moines= (black armbands) upheld right for students to express themselves where their words are non disruptive and not connected with the school Bethel vs. Fraser = Matthew Fraser gave an ASB speech filled with innuendo. Received disciplinary action. Won on free speech in a US district court, but lost 7-2 at Supreme Court (school’s policy did not violate the 1st Ammendment). This means a limit was placed on styles of expression that are sexually vulgar. Bof E vs Pico= school board attempted to remove Slaughterhouse Five and Soul on Ice. Supreme Court said, “the right to receive ideas is a necessary predicate to the recipient’s meaningful exercise of his own rights of speech, press, and political freedom…students too are beneficiaries of this principle.”---unless “educationally unsuitable or pervasively vulgar” CIPA= Children’s Internet Protection Act, federal law imposing requirements on any school or library that receives funding for net access or E-rate program: must certify that they have an Internet safety policy, educate minors about online safety, enforce a policy to monitor online activities of minors, and address/restrict access to inappropriate matter. Much less stringent, so that it can withstand the courts. Suit by ALA and ACLU pending. Annie on My Mind= 1982 novel by Nancy Garden about the romantic relationship between two 17-year-old New York City girls, Annie and Liza. On December 13, 1993, superintendent Ron Wimmer, of the Olathe School District, ordered the book removed from the high school library. Wimmer said he made his decision in order to "avoid controversy," such as the public book burning.[9]The Olathe School District refused to accept copies of the book, removing a copy that had sat on its shelf for over ten years.[8] In response, the American Civil Liberties Union joined several families and a teacher and sued the school district for removing the book.[10] Two years later in September 1995, the case went to trial. In November 1995, U.S. District Court justice Thomas Van Bebber ruled that while a school district is not obligated to purchase any book, it cannot remove a book from library shelves unless that book is deemed educationally unsuitable. He ruled Annie on My Mind to be educationally suitable, and called its removal an unconstitutional attempt to "prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion. David Loertscher and the Bird Units= Too many of the learning activities in school libraries are low-level cut and paste activities, such as transferring facts from library resources on to worksheets or just cutting information off the Internet to pass in for a report. Little learning results and plagiarism dominates. Such activities are termed "bird units" after the ubiquitous 4th

Page 7: Praxis Notes

grade bird reports, but they can be on any topic: explorers, state reports, old famous dead men, or other common K–12 topics and across all disciplines.Library media specialist and teacher teams K–12 are asked to transform "bird units" into higher-level learning experiences and evaluate the results on learning. ALA problem with CDA, COPA, and CIPA= difficult to define obscenity,

impossible to find an accurate filter of obscenity, and the law allows for a grave violation of the first amendment because of its limits on acceptable speech for minors and adult users of libraries. Pathways to Inquiry: Earth Science Inquiry Skill Analyzer and Activity Portal designed for middle school science teachers. This portal will assist teachers in analyzing their own science inquiry skills as well as those of their students via the Analyzer tool. In addition, it will assist teachers in selecting implementing, and evaluating technology-supported earth science inquiry learning activities to develop science inquiry skills, especially in identified weak areas via the Activities tool.
