PrefacePrasna upanishad is again a small booklet by which we will revise six questions relating to prana.

How the universe is created, who is the main prana, the five fold prana, the mind of the brahma purusha, how the prana originated, how it came to our body and how it passes away as also question relating to sixteen kalas is discussed here Prasnopanishad is the upnishad from Atharva vada.

How do you compare Patangati’s Yuga with that of Baba? Baba also talks of eight fold yoga in the Dhyana vahini. Yoga - chittavritti nirodhah is the objective of Yuga where as Baba says chittavritties are to be directed to the righteous way and nirodhah is not possible for a family holder. So -

³eesieë ef®eÊeJe=efÊeÒeyeesOeë ~

This particulars state of mind from the point of view of Patagati is absolutely desireless state as he eventually wants to take you to nirbije samadhi, where as Baba says it is the start of Sai-Chit-Ananda. One is the rishi and other is Krishna, bringing down the rishi to help him out for his work.

Chitta is the state of conciousness between the mind and the budhhi. The mind has the sankalpa and the vikalpa. Budhhi does not have vikalpa, so the chitta is that which process these varies sankalpas. There is a story of Manu and Shatarupa in the Bhagavata Manu is the mind and the Shatarupa is the handed fold desire. Akriti, Devahuti and Prasruti - are their daughters. Akruti is the divine sankalps, Devahuti is the sadhana what you perform to fullfill this sankalpa and the Prasruti is the fulfillment. Now you can say these there daughter make the Chitta.

Do you mean you do not want these daughters ? The love between Manu and there daughters only is the Sat - Chit - Anand. Love between the father and his daughter is self less. These daughters have reflection of their mother the Shetarupa but they have chosen the righteous way. Love of the rain showers because of this Devahuti so the Chittavritti nirodharah is not possible instead you may aim at

ef®eÊeJe=ÊeerÒeyeesOeë

And now when you understand this state of mind you can apprentice even the vritties will be blissful. There is no question of Klishtah Chittavrittayah

Je=Êe³eeë DeeqkeÌueäë SJe ~

The conversation may start with a silly thing in the morning but it has to end with a divine thought.

Thanks to my brother Prakash, and Shri Sandeep Sonar & his wife Sau. Madhura for their contribu-tions.

Question One1. Sukesha, Bhardvaja Sathyakarma, Bhargava and other rishies went to Pippalad rishi who was

their Guru.

2. All the rishies, who had the pure mind, enquired.

3. Here the first question is asked - How the creation began ?

4. He first created the prime dual - Prana and Rayi.

5. Aditya is the Prana, Rayi the moon. All forms are derived from Rayi.

6. When the Sun rises it rises from East. The Sun enters the Kalawan pada of Brahma.

7. It is the Vaishvanara the life principle of all beings.

8. Aditya becomes Surya. It becomes thousand fold.

9. Rishies who have the authority to create the world. If there is something called the Sanvatsara Purusha-the Purusha whose body is assumed to be one year-from his mind the creation started.

Page 6: prashnopanishad (1)

As the mind is the moon, which revolves around the Earth, the North and South directions gave birth to Uttarayana and Dakshinayana, later being the moon.

10. Faith austerity, and purity of life is essential. Ayatanam means the mind, words, prana, and eyes of the Rishi - who is the Sanvatsara Purusha as given above.

11. Five fold Omkar is the soul of rishi being the Atma, twelve fold being fifteen days into twelve to make an uttarayana, seven chakras of the body as is explained here.

12. From the Aditya loka He comes down to Bhuloka to form two parts of the month - shukla and krishna paksha.

13. Day and Night similarly are formed by the Prime dual - Aditya and Rayi.

14. This Pitruyaga in fact create the rain.

DeVeeled YeJeefle Yetleeefve Hepe&v³eeled DeVemebYeJeë ~

Rain gives the food and so on as also given in Gita.

15. The word Sathya obviously is indicating the dual who comes from the tapoloka to the earth.

16. This is the purest form of creative principle where still the maya principle has not entered.

Question two

1. Who is the main amongst all these gods who have created this world and illuminated it.

2. Then the sky, air, the earth and other gods started saying we are the creaters and we have illuminated it.

3. Looking at this the main prana - Aditya which we have seen in the earlier question - started going up.

4. When he started going up other gods started saying - Oh ! Please do not go away ! You are the greatest amongst us. What will happen to us if the prana - the life principle it self is not there.

5. He only is Surya, the rain, the earth, the air as they then agreed.

6. From his nabhi - nabha is the sky, nabhi of Aditya is the sky-derived all the vedas rig, yaju and sama.

7. You are the mother as well the one who gives birth to the child.

8. You are the first amongst all rishies and first of all the parents.

9. You are the Indra, the Rudra and the Jyotisham pati - the Prana.

10. You are the bliss and the righteous desire as well.

11. As we have seen the prime dual Pran and Rayi created - Sun, moon, day, night etc. He is the father and mother as well.

12. It resides in the body, the mind eyes and ears.

13. Oh god you are in all of us, please protect our wealth, our children and everything on earth.

Question three

1. Asvalayan rishi asked, ‘How the prana originates, how it comes into body, how it goes away?’ and so on.

Page 7: prashnopanishad (1)

2. Oh you are brahmin, so I am answering it.

3. The soul creates the prana. Soul enters the mind and the mind takes the suitable form of body.

4. As the king deligates his power to various executives, the prana divides its work.

5. Eyes, ears, mouth, nose are governed by the prana; middle of the body comes under the control of samana, and organs of exeretion are the apana. Mark the word saptarshi. It is the seven fold world of Narayana.

6. Seventy two thousand veins each again divided into hundred and again hundred veins is the vyana, in the heart. Six planes are in the body each with twelve thousand veins.

7. Udana is that form of prana which takes back to prana by doing good work and to apana by doing evil.

8. Aditya is the prana. ‘Chakshoh suryah ajayat.’ It resides in the eyes. Earth then become the apana and the sky is samana.

9. Teja or the effulgence is the udana. It creates the body and the mind. So here what is true to the cosmic world is also true to the individuals.

10. As is the sankalp of the mind the chitta will be taken towards prana.

11. After completely understanding this one who experience the nectar, this shloka. Mark the word shloka. Sha-loka. Which gives the base to all lokas.

12. The five fold kosha anna, prana, mana, vidnyana and ananda is indicated here. All these koshas are suffixed with maya. It is how everything is created.

Question Four1. How in this awake, dream and sleep state of mind he enjoys the happiness?

2. Entire cosmic life principle put together in his mind by which nor can he see, hear nor can he touch or do any other activity.

3. Bhuh and bhuvah these two vyahruties, they are also termed as Garhapatya and Ahavaniya because of the respective rishies become vyana and samana of this soul.

4. Breathing activity become the samana. Mind becomes the udana day and night doing sankalpa and vikalpa.

5. The mind sees again and again whatever it has perceived in its awake state.

6. He dreams and enjoys the happiness or the bliss in all the bodies.

7. As the bird on the tree feels, so the soul experiences this world.

8. Five basic elements, the earth etc. their respective perceptions, senses of perception and action make the input to the impulses of mind and the budhhi process it, as the ego is subconciously working at dream state as well.

9. Vijnanatma Purushah-The Purusha who resides in vijnanamaya kosha, this prasna or question is relating to Him. He is the subject of all the deeds, knower of everything, he sees, hears, tastes everything. He is the svapna purusha.

10. It is the omkara only in the experience of all the beings. Somya - which trickles the nectar of life.

Page 8: prashnopanishad (1)

11. Vijnanatma purush originates all the gods and all the beings are present there. One who understands this all pervasive omkar is the all knower.

Question Five

1. How the life passes away ? asked Sathya kama.

2. Brahma and the atma both are the embodiment of Omkara. In the ayatanwan pada of Brahma every thing is at one level or it is at equanimity.

3/4/5. In these three shlokas it talks about three matras of Omkara. Akara - awake state human being - rigveda, ukara - dream state - gandharva - yajurved makara - sleep - adityaloka - samaveda.

Obviously one who passes away in the awake state takes the rebirth, one who is in dream state takes the human way and comes back again. One who passes away when he is in the deep sleep takes to Aditya loka and does not take rebirth.

Question Six

1. Question is asked about sixteen kalas in the body.

2. These kalas are in your body only.

3. How they are created and how do they sustain? Again a question is posed.

4. As we have seen earlier Atmana jayati pranah-Prana with faith creates the five elements. One who is realized, by his sankalpa and the austernity of mind creates the lokas and the names.

5. As all the rivers go back to the sea all these names and forms eventually disappear.

6. Oh! you take us away from the fear of death.

7. He is the embodiment of Brahma when all the kalas come back to Him.

8. We pray to that rishi who removes our Avidya.

The Brahma Purusha has an ability to create and in this upanishad in fact the process of cre-ation is given. But the Brahma Purusha who is the source has to be selfless divine soul. From the heart of such a soul only universe is created.

ve leled Yeeme³eles met³eex ve MeMeebkeÀes ve HeeJekeÀë

Is he beyond the sun and moon ? Not at all. He is all pervasive brahma. Samadhi is said to be chaitanya and chinmaya. Which are post realization experiences. In this state of mind he creates with his maya. In fact the whole creation is caused by Him.

Adhiatma, adhideva and adhibhuta - think over these concepts. Adhiatma is all pervasive omkara. He creates by his will the divine world of gods that is adhidaivika and the gods create the material world that is adhibhautika. Cloudless sky is the adhyatma, the clouds are like adhideva and the rain and the farms of food become adhibhautika. By whose will this happens ? It is the brahma yadnya.

Not this ! Not this ! A spiritual master will say.

What were scientific theories once upon a time turned out to be untrue latter. Take the example of theory of light, quantum theory of light, theory of photons etc. Earlier theory is discarded after a span of time. Mechanical, Kinetic, heat, magnetic and electrical energies were discovered and the constants which equate them were also found out but when it comes to solar energy scientist remained amazed by the vastness of nature.

Prakriti is eight fold and these energies are also forms of prakriti from ashvashkti to surya shakti.

In this small sukta of Mantrapushpam if you concentrate on the line ‘ayatavan bhavati’ and if you see how many times it is repeated we can understand greatness of this sukta. It is as if we are joining the five elements with moon and constellations with this. Brahma is divided into four parts, Anatavan, Ayatvan, Jyntishvan and Kalavan. Ayatvan is in all the beings is the form of speech, prana, mind and eyes. Jyotishvan contains, sun, moon, fire and lightening. the moon is joined to the mind - by chandrama manaso jatah !

Moon and constellation is one sama. Our birth and death correspond to constellation so it is ayatvan bhavti.

The year is also related to motion of Sun and Moon, so it is the Jyotishvan. Agni is five fold, so the five fold agni becomes - Ayatvan bhavti.

Jyotishvan thus becomes ayatavan and as we we start with the divine sankalpa - bhadram Karnebhi - it makes the mind speech and prana righteous. It rains because of the lightening of Jyo-tishvan. Thus this mantrapushap gathers all the forms of energies together and makes it righteous.

The five fold sama of rain is as follows -

The will of brahma creates the wind, the clouds, lightening and the rain.

Recentely when shri Anil Kumar had came to Mumbai he illustrated some of the touching in-cidents of his life. On one occassion he saw Baba looking at him and suddenly disappeared. What is this called? That you may call it a siddhi. In fact it is so. The antardhana siddhi. But if you see it from scientifc point of view also you will come to know that it is going out of the visible band of colours. The solar energy being the cosmic energy is the source of all energy.

‘Brahma Surya Aditya.’ That is the divine mantra in the Surya upanishad, which creates the energy from the brahma a void itself. If you say Aditya Surya Brahma the energy goes back to the source. This you may call a mantra by which one can disappear. But then you have to reach that stage.

I can quote one more illustration from Shri Indulal Shah’s book - ‘We devotees’ - He thought he will have to cancel the meeting as there was a posibility of a rain, sky being full of clouds. When he was about to cancell it Baba just waved his hand and the clouds disappeared. Ofcourse not really, they were shifted to some neighbouring part. Here it is just the will of Bhagawan.

Purusha is the agni. His speech is samidha. Prana is smoke. Tongue is the ray. Eyes are flames. Ears are the sparks.

When the sanvatsara purusha comes down He comes by south and north directions. In the horoscope also we see there are the matru and pitru houses. The east and west direction are the lagna and jaya houses. That is how it is divided into four parts first and then each is divided into three parts.

These statements are from various questions asked in this upanishad. One has to bear in mind that we are not talking about a individual but a cosmic entity - the Brahma Purusha - then only we can say his eyes derived the sun and his mind the moon. We have seen earlier what a chakshusha purusha is. (Naradiya bhakti sutra)

The seven fold saptarchi is the samana. The mundaka upanishad explains it as Kali, Karali, manojava, sulohita sudhumravarna, vishvarchi and Devi (Refer to Spiritual Terms and Symbols page no. 13)

Seventy two thousand veins each divided into one hundred and again further one hundred is what vyana is of such brahma purusha. We are discussing his body and the six plexus in his body and not an individual.

Of course we are not talking about the same Sun, as the names are different.

It is also believed that hundred years of mankind is equal to one year of Aditya, The concept of time derives from the Sun, Moon and the Earth. Moon and earth gives us the day and the sun and the earth gives one year. If we are thinking of sanvatsara purusha the awareness of earth is lost as only sun and sun alone is there. Concept of time is lost. Aditya hridaya was there when it was the period of Ramayana as well as when it was the time of Mahabharata. And now as well we chant the same stotra. The earth has changed and the men on earth have changed or rather evolved. It is the process of evolution by the effulgence of the Sun god, which is there in you as well. Concept of yuga avatara perhaps can be better understood now as the time is illusion.

Tapa, yajna, dana and sathya-these four divine qualities were the gift of the respective yuga purusha. In kali yuga only the sathya or the truth has remained. During Ramavatara it was Dharma and in Krishna avatara it is the love which prevailed. Earlier the gods and demons were separate but

Page 14: prashnopanishad (1)

now both of them are preset in all individual. Natural and human problems have always reciprocated as man himself is the gift of nature. When we forget this we are in problem. Six seasons of the nature however shower their love as usual, sun was never late to rise and the moon did not forget to shower its bliss, mother earth gave us enough food but we just forgot.

F&Mee Jeem³eb Fob meJe& ³eled eEkeÀ ®e peiel³eeb peieled ~

As the world population is accelarating and the resources under pressure there are bound to be inevitable human problems. Though the divine grace is the same then and now there are tears in the eyes of mother Earth. Coming age will be the age of mother, Bhu-mata, Ved-mata, Go-mata all are to be worshiped.

Go-mata is the centre of agricultural economy, mother is at the centre of the family and Vedmata which derives the entire wealth, all are to be worshiped.

Earth, if you consider in totality -

1. Pure water for everybody.

2. Food (Vegeterian) for everybody.

These are the two basic needs which are to be kept in mind, irrespective of your nationality or religion.

Sun, earth, moon, purusha, prakriti - these basic natural elements will be related to various religious faiths, they may term it anything or whatever in their language. So when you thinks of Prasno-panishad a modern mind also think in this direction as the vedic wisdom is for all the time to come.

Deeefol³e Jew ÒeeCeë

Solar energy will be only solution in times to come and the scientists are aware of it. Man and nature, this dual has been constantly playing with each other and man is always learning in the pro-cess. The scientific achievements are also the gift of nature. The Teja in the body or the life principle which comes from the sun gives you brighter intellect.

efOe³ees ³ees veë Òe®eeso³eeled ~

Where is Mother Earth ? If you put all the women of the world together the entity will be the Mother Earth. They are mothers of individual families from various nations. If you see the EHV pro-gramme from the eyes of the mother now they are termed as Educare, Sociocare and Medicare programmes. Mother cares for the child as she gives birth to the child.

There is a long way to go. Next in the same Bhardvaja tradition - Prema Sai - will be taking birth perhaps with this sankalpa in His mind. As He will be the shakti avatara will utilise all his divine powers for the same cause.

Two third of the surface of the earth is the sea, and I wonder whether we can convert the sea water into drinking water by softening it. Water is not a commodity for sale.

You may think how these questions are related to the Prasno-upanishad? Prasna or question is about prana or the life principle. Question three relates with the pancha kosha.

Page 15: prashnopanishad (1)

Kosha EHv ProgrammesAnanda Vidnyana Educare Mano Medicare Prana Anand Sociocare

As the mind and the disease is related with each other Medicare programme is related to manomaya kosha. Preventing a disease becomes the first task but even that is again related to food habits so we have to think again of Ayurveda seriously. A plant like tulsi is useful for range of diseases, we need to research it out scientifically.

Vijnanamaya Kosha is the Jyoti itself.

1. Nature of love is Truth2. Love in action is Righteousness3. Awareness of love is Peace.4. Feeling of love is Ahinsa.

This becomes the Educare programme and who can run it? Those who have reached to the stage of loving others.

If you are thinking is terms of increasing the medical facilities or hospitals per capita you may be making mistake and again where are the resources ? In turn you can aim at changing the life styles of the people.

1. One must become vegeterian.2. One must practice at least for some time in a day Jyoti Meditation or Gayatri Japa.3. Be busy in some good activity.

I am sure you will be away from any kind of disease for life time. In fact to plan for hospital is to plan for ‘No Hospital’.

Narayana seva is one form of seva activity and I am sure entire world will follow it one day.

Words, actions and thoughts in perfcect union that is what austerity is. Practice it. I think that is one line EHV Programme.

As Baba is there now with you he will be there in future too. Our names and forms can be different and He comes as Prema Sai but the task remains the same. I think we will not discuss out the sixteen kalas and their vanishing into void as it is not to happen. He will sustain as He is Shri Sathya Sai Narayana.

If you want to understand Sathya with respect to this upanishad then it is thePran and RayiSun and MoonUttarayan and DakshinayanaShukla Paksha and Krishna PakshaDay and NightPurusha and Prakriti

That is Sathya - the union of creative principle.

efJeée mJeOece& met³ex Heenes

‘May the world be withheld by the Sun’

Page 16: prashnopanishad (1)

That is how Jnaneshvara an incarnation of Lord Vishnu puts it in his very popular prayer called ‘Pasayadana’. Needless to comment as we were discussing the same all throughout.

Ahilya was the form of earth and when Shri Ram came there to uplift her he was the enbodiment of Aditya. So the earth and sun, this divine love only is projected in this puran-katha. If we understand the symbolism behind it the modern mind can go deep into these stories as well.

My this small book is just small study circle and I feel we will go on meeting in future. I hope you are benifitted by it.
