    The physics of thegrapevine

Using the GrapevineTe grapevine movement is a great movement or escape or submission, depending on the position o the user,in sport grappling. But, in the world o combatives, many times ground work is based upon shrimping, strik-ing, and vital targeting more than refined sport techniques. Making the sport based technique work within thecombative space is a great way to create a smart, effective deense rom the ground

Using a leg grapevine is a matter o physics and mechanics. By understanding the physics o how the grapevineworks, we can stop fighting the technique and start fighting the person. It is important that using physics incombatives is designed not to make things more difficult, but more efficient.

Te ull mount is one o the most daunting positions we can find ourselves in a combative situation. It gives theattacker the highest level o access to attacking the deender. While in the guard the attacker can be held to adistance or tied up, but with a ull mount the deender is at a high level o vulnerability.

A Second Look at the Full MountTe ull mount can seem daunting because o the access it gives the attacker. As strikes begin to reigthere is ofen a tendency to curl up or put up the hands and arms to deflect or block blows to protect rom the strikes. Tis delay in effective deense can quickly lead to the overwhelming the deender.

But, when looked at through physics, the ull mount looks different or two reasons:

    1. Center Mass: Te center mass (CM) o the attacker has little stability in orward attack. Because bearing area (or LBA as discussed in Breaking Balance) is the knees and ankles, the upper body becounstable with a orward attack. With a press orward, the CM will orce a balancing movement to cr

    load bearing area.

    2. Leg ulcrums: Te connection between the legs o the deender and attacker create multiple poinrotation that can be used to move the attacker, with the primary ulcrum being at the ankles.

Te GrapevineTe term grapevine comes rom the wrapping o the legs together between two combatants. It can be used inboth offense and deense. When wrapped together, multiple points o rotation occur. In this image we can seethree primary points o rotation because o the connection o the two bodies.1. Hips - When the hips move, this will create movement in the center mass because o its immediate connec-tion to the hips through the spine and pelvis.

    2. Knees - When the knees o the deender move this will create wide movement in the attacker due to theconnection between the hips and knees.

    3. Ankles - Te connections o the ankles create a point o rotation which can affect the knees, and thereorethe hips. While the knees and hips may move independently as a base, i the ankles move it will effect the entirelower body structure.

Te FulcrumTe ankles must connecttogether to utilize this grWhen the ankles conneca rotation point, but also ulcrum as can be seen in

Start by wrapping the benankle around the other aattacker adjusts, constantmove until a proper conn

made. Te shin orms a (connecting the knee andwill become very importthe movement o the boda rudder around the kn

Beginning the MovementTe goal o this reversal is to move thecenter mass o the attacker outside o the

LBA and create a large lever.

In order to use the grapevine deensivereversal o the ull mount, the deenderuses the right leg to grapevine, hookingdeeply into the lef leg o the attacker.Tis anchors the knee and ankle into theground.

Using the lef leg, the deender pressesup, rotating up the lef hip into theattacker. With the attackers lef leganchored, this prevents a balancingmovement. Since this knees are theLBA, this movement will orce the center

mass over and past the load bearing area.

Te Second Class LeverLooking at the second class lever - lets look again at the grapevine deense.Te effort (F1) is the lef hip, the load is the CM, and the ulcrum is the grapevine.Compare the photo and diagram. Tis movement acts as a trip, with the knee planted and the orce pressingover, preventing a balancing, compensational, or dampening movement and equilibrium being removed. Itsimportant to look at this mechanically so the mystery o how is replaced with a movement that is efficient.

Te RollTe grapevine deense wiroll, as the l egs are intercoand the hips orce the deroll with the attacker.

It is important to direct thposition o dominance. Iphoto you can see that thbrings hands up to stop anorward grabs, give acces

and throat, while also allodeender to brace up andpost roll.

Te eet and knees shouldmoving into an aggressivto gain an effective postur

Post RollIn this scenario, a firearm is going tobe used in order to deeat the threat.

But training with a knie, club, choke, escape, or strike may be used as well.

Post roll, the deender keeps thegrapevine o the legs in a positiveposition. Tis will prevent a countergrapevine by the attacker. Te deenderbrings the hands orward to counterany strikes or grabs, while beginning tosit back to create distance as a deense.

Initial Counter AttackIn this movement, the primary goal is todeploy the firearm into a position where itcan be fired, while having a counter grabor pistol retention. Te pistol is deployedunder the protective hand to end off anygrabs.

Te deender is now moving the upperbody backward, putting the CM squarely

between the LBA o the knees and theeet. Tis uses distance as a deense, limitsmobility in the attacker legs, removes bodyparts rom the bullet path i the firearm isfired, as well as countering any grapevinesor counters at the moment (at the momentmeaning we should never stay in one placeto prevent a well-thought out counter).

Sitting BackTe last part o this deensive

movement is sitting back. Sittingback reduces the chance o theattacker to pull the deender intothe guard, allows or more lethaltargeting with the pistol, as well asincreasing distance.

You will notice the high deensiveposition o the arm. Tis creates abox to fire within and removes thearm rom accidentally being hitwith fire i the pistol is used.

Sitting back increases the optionsor deense and reduces the chances

o a counter to be effective.

As with any Pramek manual, notes or the student are important concepts to rememb

    1. Te only race is the race to survive. Dont worry about being ast...worry about doRemember you can get injured. Consult a doctor beore trying the material in thisGo slow, be easy on your training partner and communicate with them.

    2. Tis is not MMA. Tis is combatives. Remember the difference between the two.

need a reminder o the differencecheck out this video.3. When training communicate with your training partner. Ask when their equilibriuexperiment with body movements and attacks, ask what is working and is not.

    4. Tis is a base guide - its not a be-all, end-all. I you are an experienced grappler, thwill refine what you know. I you are have not used this movement beore, you willup your ground deensive methods. Te important rule is to look to the science anagainst the CM.

    5. Tis is not MMA - the goal is not to continue with grappling. Te goal o this is toposition o dominance, gain a position o stability over the LBA, and move rom th

    6. Tis is a very powerul, quick reversal or you to use. Its simple and should be donexplosive movement. You should train it to be ast and explosive and get to your pcounter attack.

    7. Do not put the cart beore the horse. Use the grapevine method to get to experime

I you can get the grapevine down to a fluid, successul movement that works withthen introduce different weapons and counter attacks.

    8. Experiment with different weapons once you can successully this deense. In this firearms are used. Deploying a knie, using a choke or a strike, moving to escape, tthe body.
