From Revd Paul

Well, I do hope that you enjoyed the first edition of Praise Be!

Here we are with the second edition.

To begin, I want to talk about the wonder of a celebration, the Confirmation Service with Holy Eucharist in St John the Baptist Church, Abthorpe, 9:30 a.m. on 15

th October.

We will have our Diocesan Bishop, Donald Allister coming to preside and confirm.

What is Confirmation?

In the Church of England, those who choose to be confirmed make a further commitment to the Christian journey that began with their baptism. It marks their decision to live a responsible and committed Christian life. Through prayer and the laying of hands, the bishop asks God to send his Holy Spirit to give them the strength to live as Disciples of Christ. The service is led by the bishop who invites candidates for confirmation to make commitments as follows: In this rite the bishop asks candidates to state whether they

are ready to affirm their faith in Jesus Christ. Candidates may be invited to give a short testimony about how God has brought them to this point in their life.

The bishop calls on candidates to renounce the devil and acts of evil.

Candidates join with the bishop and the rest of the congregation to recite the Apostles' Creed as an expression of the Christian faith they are now affirming for themselves. They may be sprinkled with holy water as a reminder of their baptism.

The bishop leads the people in praying for the Holy Spirit to rest upon those confirmed. He addresses each candidate by name and recites a special confirmation prayer.

The bishop may commission the candidates, asking them to express their commitment to a life of Christian discipleship. Candidates may sometimes be anointed with oil as an additional sign of their anointing by the Holy Spirit.

In Christianity, All Souls' Day commemorates All Souls, the Holy Souls, or the Faithful Departed; that is, the souls of Christians who have died. Observing Christians typically remember deceased relatives on the day.

In Western Christianity the annual celebration is now held on 2nd

November and is associated with the three days of Allhallowtide, including All Saints' Day (1

st November) and its vigil, Halloween

(31st October).

Continued over the page:

In the Church of England, there is no set age for confirmation although it has been traditional for people to be confirmed in their early teens. However, anyone who is old enough to answer responsibly for himself/herself and has received appropriate preparation can be confirmed.

Later in this edition, you have the chance to read about our new Reader, about All Soul’s Day and the life of our churches.

Please remember that this is our churches’ magazine and in order to make this magazine work we need to hear from you. Send in articles and we will do all we can to publish them. We want to celebrate the life of the church here, and our commitment to Jesus Christ. I look forward to receiving articles soon. The deadline for submitting articles for the next edition of ‘Praise Be!’ is 15

th October.

During the English Reformation, the observance of All Souls' Day lapsed, although a new Anglican theological understanding of the day has ‘led to a widespread acceptance of this commemoration among Anglicans’. Patricia Bays, with regard to the Anglican view of All Souls' Day, wrote that:

All Souls Day (November 2nd

) is a time when we particularly remember those who have died. The prayers appointed for that day remind us that we are joined with the Communion of Saints, that great group of Christians who have finished their earthly life and with who we share the hope of resurrection from the dead.

As such, Anglican parishes ‘now commemorate all the faithful departed in the context of the All Saints' Day celebration’, in keeping with this fresh perspective.

Here in our Benefice we will observe this commemoration with our annual service in which we remember those who have died, in the past year. We will also remember others who have been dear to us and members of our church communities who have predeceased us.

Our service will be on Thursday 2nd

November at 7:30 p.m. in St John the Baptist Church, Abthorpe.

If you have lost a loved one and would like their name read out in this service, please add their name to the list at the back of Church.

We will send out invitations to the families of those who have lost members in this past year where the funeral took place in one of the Benefice churches or at the Crematorium. Their loved ones’ names will be included in the service.

Singing Group

NOT A CHOIR! It is going to happen, see below!

Would anyone like to be involved in gathering together to sing?

The Rector would be happy to hold occasional sessions in the Churches to sing hymns, Taizé Chants, maybe some settings for the Communion Service and to have a go at some praise songs.

If you would like to join in with this, send the me a message [preferably an email to [email protected], or a written message, I tend to forget things if they are not written down - sorry!]

I have had a few replies already, so we shall look to having a couple of sessions in the autumn, each in St Michael’s Church.

THE CRACKED POT

None of us are perfect but praise God he uses us just as we are because he created us; chose us; loves us; As most of you know last weekend I had another emergency admission to hospital with a major bleed. I’d only been back at work for a week and being in hospital again left me questioning if I was truly doing what God wanted me to do. I came across this story again and it greatly encouraged me to stop doubting and fully put my trust in God again.

The Cracked Pot:

A water bearer in India had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole that he carried across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it, while the other pot was perfect and always de-livered a full portion of water. At the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full. For a full two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots full of water to his house. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect for which it was made. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do. After two years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you. I have been able to deliver only half my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house. Because of my flaws, you have to do all of this work, and you don't get full value from your efforts," the pot said. The bearer said to the pot, "Did you notice that there were flowers on your side of the path but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about your flaw, and I planted flower seeds on your side of the path. Every day while we walk back, you've watered them. For two years, I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house." Our Benefice Mission Statement

You may have noticed that on the front of this magazine and on many items that we publish in the Benefice, including any letter received from me, we have our Mission Statement, which is:

Our vision in the Whittlewood parishes is to know God better, love others and reach out with the good news of Jesus.

This was created some time ago, indeed, before I became your parish priest.

At our next meeting of WPT [Whittlewood Parochial Church Councils Together] in October I will be asking members of your church councils to consider this statement to ensure it is right for us today. And in writing this for ‘Praise Be!’ I ask you also to think about this statement and let your church council, or me know your thoughts.

If we think it is correct then we have to ensure we are using it to guide our mission.

If it is no longer relevant then we need to rethink our mission statement so it is right for us going forward.

None of this is about trying to create change. The purpose is to ensure that our Mission Statement informs our mission. That is to keep it real and meaningful. Our mission informs the statement we make about ourselves in these parishes as we seek to serve God and take our part in building the kingdom of God on earth.

All this should be based on Jesus own great mission statement, His instruction to us:

Matthew 28. 16 - end

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’

A New Ministry I am shortly to be licensed as a Reader, or lay minister, within our benefice so I am taking this opportunity to introduce myself across the five parishes, in one move. As many of you are aware, I am Clare Ray and I live in Silverstone village with my three children and have worshipped, and been involved in leading worship, at St. Michael’s church for the past sixteen years. Three years ago I finally understood my calling and embarked on the Lay worship ministry training course within our diocese, to train as a Reader. I have really enjoyed all the learning, the opportunity to explore my faith and the chance to share questions and experiences with other like-minded people. The written assignments were always challenging and always a pleasure/pain experience! I was fortunate to be supported by Graham, Paul and Peter who have all loaned me resources and words of wisdom, for which I am very grateful. I am very sorry to have lost the opportunity to learn any more from Peter, who was always ready to assist where possible and had so much wisdom to draw on but I look forward to working with Paul and continuing to develop in my ministry. I will be licensed in September and from then on I will be more actively involved across the benefice, though those details are yet to be decided. I love leading worship, putting together a service and worshipping with you and am looking forward to discovering ways to support and enhance our worship provision. I am also a little cautious as I will be juggling my “day job” as a painter and decorator, meeting the needs of my children and my role as Reader. Please pray that I get the balance right! I am very excited about this new phase, having the chance to put some of the theory into practice, and meeting you all in your places of worship. I daresay that there will be times when I will need your patience and support as I continue to learn but I am hoping for great things for all of us. I am reminded, at this time, of Peter (the apostle) walking across water to Christ Jesus. His success depended entirely on his trust. I think I shall be reminding myself of that image and accompanying message many times during the next few years! Thank you, in anticipation of that patience and support, Clare Ray

Page 10: Praise Be! - Whittlewood Parishes Be... · you've watered them. For two years, I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way

10

Readers’ Ministry It is a delight to be able to say that from the end of September we will have a new Reader in the Benefice. Clare Ray has been studying for the past three years on the Readers Course in the Diocese of Peterborough and has completed this course [doing exceedingly well, as I am sure those of you who know her would expect] and so will be licensed at a special service in our cathedral in Peterborough on Saturday 23

rd

September.

The Church of England says this about Readers Readers are lay people who have been selected, trained and licensed by the Bishop of a diocese to preach, teach and lead worship in a pastoral context. There are more than 10,000 active Readers in the Church of England. Most are licensed to a parish but some are chaplains in prisons, hospitals, hospices or schools, a few are in charge of parishes. Readers give their services to the Church so do not receive payment. Readers are supported by a Warden of Readers and a Secretary in each diocese and by the Central Readers Council based at Church House, Westminster.

We will be taking a little time to explore the best way by which Clare’s ministry can bring about blessings into the life of God’s Church here in our area, with our five churches and the opportunities that Clare will be able to discover.

I ask that everyone will take time to pray for Clare, for her ministry and also for her family.

St John the Baptist, Abthorpe: News

Our ‘Tea and Piece’ monthly summer Sunday afternoon teas have been successful and the last one will be on 20

th August. We have

decided to cancel the one planned for September as we will be serving tea and cake at the Garage Sale. Thank you to everyone who has supported these. We did think that we would not have many people at our July tea as it was the afternoon of the Wimbledon men’s finals and Silverstone Grand Prix, but it turned out to be our busiest! Congratulations to our recent Tote winners who are Janet Dancer in June and Lucy and Paul Grimes in July. Each of the winners won £202.50. Thank you to everyone who supports our tote. We have recently purchased a new mower for the church grass. The old one had been a bit of a struggle to use and the new one is a big improvement. We appreciate all the help we get from the people on the mowing rota to help keep the churchyard looking so good. If you think you could spare some time over the summer and would like a bit of exercise, please think about joining the rota. The more people we have, the less everyone has to do!

Food Bank Box: The box in the back of church is still making its regular trips to the Towcester Food Bank. The donations on 18

th

July weighed 13.5 kg making our total to date 1105.9kg. At the moment, they are wanting tins of baked beans, sugar, soup and tinned fruit. Small bags of sugar are particularly welcome and Waitrose has started stocking these. The church is open during daytime hours every day if anyone wants to drop anything into the box. Thank you to all who continue to support this.

Garage Sale: Our Garage Sale is coming up soon, on 24th

September from 2pm to 5pm. We hope all our villagers have had a good clear out over the spring and early summer and have lots of things to sell! Come over and enjoy a pleasant stroll round our lovely village to pick up some bargains followed by a nice cup of tea and home made cake afterwards in the Old School. Parking will be available and a map of where the open garages are. When we held our previous sale in 2015, it was a very successful afternoon.

Harvest Festival: Our Harvest Weekend will be on 7th and 8

th

October. Harvest Supper will be on 7th October, 7pm for 7.30pm

and the service at 11am on the 8th. Produce donated at the

Harvest Service will once again go to the Hope Centre in Northampton.

Future Services: Please note that we have just one service in August and one in September:

Sunday 13th August, 11am Holy Eucharist

Sunday 17th September, 10am Holy Eucharist

Sunday 8th October, 11am Harvest Holy Eucharist

On Sunday 15th October at 9.30am, Bishop Donald will be taking a

Benefice Holy Eucharist service in our church, which will include the sacrament of Confirmation. Everyone is very welcome at all our services, including this one.

St James’ the Great, Paulerspury : News

A successful Cheese and Wine Evening was held in Chris and Dee Cole’s lovely garden on 15 July and we thank them for their hospitality and everyone who came to support the fundraising event for St James. The August Bank Holiday is almost upon us and we are busy organising our three day Flower Festival. The theme is ‘Our Village’ and ladies are thinking about how to exhibit this in flower arrangements. Others are organising the food that will be required for lunches and afternoon teas etc. The men are recruited to erect tents and fetch and carry what is needed to the main marquee and tents in the churchyard and the list becomes endless. There is always a good community atmosphere with everyone coming together to help make this a successful and joyful weekend whilst raising the much needed money for the church roof. We welcome Mr Robin Bunting who takes the helm at our village school and look forward to seeing him and the children in church for their Harvest Service in October when we give thanks for the produce. Messy Church will begin a new year in September and is held in the school main hall at 3.15pm on a monthly basis. The numbers have crept up during the last few months and we hope this will continue. On 8 October we will be having a Harvest Lunch in the Village Hall and details will be circulated nearer the time. A date for your diaries – 14 October. Last year we had a quiz and everyone enjoyed it so we are repeating the experience. It would be fun if a team from each church within the benefice entered. A little competition? We are planning a concert in November and before we know it the Carol Service will be here.

St Botolph’s, Slapton : News

On October 14th there will be a very interesting talk by Zara

Fleming, in aid of St. Botolph's. This will take place in Abthorpe at the Old School at 6.30 pm and is entitled "The Kingdom of the

Zara is a NADFAS lecturer, Art Consultant and Curator and her specialist knowledge spans the Himalayas from Ladakh to Bhutan. She regularly leads tours to that part of the world. The price of the ticket has yet to be decided but will be about £10 and include a glass of wine or soft drink and delicious home-made canapés. Reservations to [email protected] or 01327860155, or Linda Humphreys [email protected] or 07752587456. It is important that we raise some money as we have just completed a drainage scheme and we need some more of the new heaters. Peter Newcombe and Jeremy Balfe keep trying to locate the leak in the roof. This is notoriously difficult and they have had no success so far much to their frustration. THY KINGOM COME: PRAYER AND WALK

We had a wonderful event back in May, our Prayer and Walk event.

We did this as our part of the call to prayer from the Archbishops of the Church of England, asking us to pray that more and more people may come to know Jesus Christ for themselves as Lord and Saviour.

We walked from church to church, with prayers in each church as well as opportunity for refreshment and relief.

It was an inspiring day. Some people managed to walk the whole journey, (well done to them) and others walked between a couple of churches. Some people joined in by driving between churches and others took on the role of hosting in their own church.

We were encouraged to take the time to think and pray for five people, our friends or family members, that they may come to know Jesus.

There was wonderful hospitality along the way, culminating in some very welcome food and drink at Paulerspury [we started in Slapton].

Well, people enjoyed this so much that there has been the request to ‘do it again’, so watch out next year, and if you get the chance, join in!

Arriving at St James’ the Great, Paulerspury at the end of the Prayer and Walk event. 27

16

BAPTISMS [Christenings] and WEDDINGS

Yes, this is a part of the service we offer to you in our parishes.

Yes, we offer you the chance to be baptised or to have your child Christened in Church, or indeed, to be married in Church.

What do you need to do?

Simply, contact the parish priest [who also may have the title, Vicar or Rector] who in the case of these parishes is The Revd Paul M

cLeod.

For a Christening, this is the common name given for the service of Holy Baptism when the one to be baptised is a child, if you live in the parish you have a right to request a service of Baptism for your child, or indeed to explore this for yourself!

These services can be with the gathered Church Community in the Holy Eucharist on a Sunday morning, or it is possible to hold a quieter, more intimate service for you and your family and friends on a Saturday at midday [normally].

The great news is that we do not charge for a Christening, however, we are very much in need of funds and so we ask that

you and your guests to such a service come prepared to make a contribution to the Church.

For a Marriage, a wedding, there are some questions that would need to be asked and answered to establish whether or not you can marry in one of our churches. These are legal questions about your age, current marital status, nationality and whether you are related to the one you wish to marry. There are also questions about where you live or if you have a ‘Qualifying Connection’ to the church in which you would like

to marry. After which, if all is OK, we need to be able to agree on a date and time for a service, most often this is on a Saturday, some on a Friday and occasionally midweek.

Page 17: Praise Be! - Whittlewood Parishes Be... · you've watered them. For two years, I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way

17

Yes, there is a financial aspect to a wedding; there are legal fees plus some local fees if you choose to make use of the services of people such as an organist etc. This year [2017] the legal fee for marrying in church after the publication of Banns is £456, we then have the verger fee - £40, the organist - £80 [if the service is videoed this is £120], bells, varies by church but ranges between £40 and £180, and during the colder months, heating in our Churches means and additional charge of £50.

It is wonderful to be able to accompany you, the people in our parishes on these important family occasions and to celebrate with you. If we can help you, if you have any questions, please do get in touch with us in the Churches, speak with The Revd Paul or have a chat with a church member.

JAWS!

The Whittlewood Benefice

Our regular pattern of Sunday worship across the five churches

There are exceptions to this pattern.

These are notified on the Sunday service newsletter each week.

Our Churches are each dedicated to a Saint and on or near to the celebration date of that saint we hold the Patronal Festival service as a United Benefice Eucharist.

The hope is that as many people as possible will join with the celebration of the patron saint and the life of the parish in which that church exists.

We also hold service for major festivals throughout the year in the churches of the Benefice.

There is a monthly Wednesday evening service, 6 p.m. on the 4th

Wednesday of the month at St James’ the Great Church, Paulerspury. This is a Healing Eucharist including the laying on of hands and the anointing with Holy Oils.

Weekday Eucharist Service On most Thursdays through the year we hold a service

in St Michael’s Church at 9:30 a.m. This is a simple, generally a said [no hymns] service.

We have a small regular group that attend, but it would be wonderful if the number were to grow.

So remember, Thursday morning in St Michael’s Church, Silverstone.

The Holy Eucharist Time for peace and quiet, the presence of God

celebrated and the Grace of God received.
