Our Mission By grace, the mission of

Beautiful Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church is

to proclaim the Word of God so that we may praise his name,

grow together in the knowledge of our Savior,

and share with others his message of forgiveness and eternal life.

Welcome-- We are glad you could join us today! It is our hope that this service is a bless-ing to you. Please join us for worship again soon.

Please save the last two rows of pews for parents with small children.

Parents with little ones: If your child becomes restless during the service, that’s okay… We’re glad they’re here, and Jesus is pleased when they are brought to hear his Word: “Let the little children come to me.” If you need to be with your child in the Fellowship Hall, the service can be heard through a speaker. We also have Children’s Church

during second service following the Children’s message down the preschool hallway.

Five minutes before the worship service begins the usher will light the candles. This is our signal to quiet down and prepare our hearts for worship. (There are prayers for worship preparation on page 10 in the front part of the hymnal.)

Restrooms are conveniently located to the left as you exit the sanctuary.

Everyone is invited to join us in the fellowship hall after worship for coffee, snacks, and conversation! Please help to keep the chapel clean by leaving all food and drinks in the fellowship hall.

Please silence your cell phone before the start of the service.

Gathering Rite on Holy Baptism Please Stand. P: In the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

P: I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. C: Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to the spirit. (John 3:5,6) P: Surely we were sinful at birth, sinful from the time our mothers conceived us. (Psalm 51:5) C: But we were washed, we were sanctified, we were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:11)

P: As baptized children of God, we confess our sins. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have diso-beyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am tru-ly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. P: Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless (Ephesians 5:25-27). Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

Prayer of the Day P: Father in heaven, at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan, you proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit. Keep us who are baptized into Christ faithful in our calling as your children and make us heirs with him of everlasting life; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Please be seated.

First Lesson Acts 16: 25-34 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other pris-oners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and every-body’s chains came loose. 27 The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had es-caped. 28 But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!” 29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” 32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33 At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized. 34 The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole family.

Response Psalm 2 (p. 65)

Gospel Lesson Mark 1: 4-11 And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusa-lem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

6 John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And this was his message: “After me will come one more power-ful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I bap-tize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” 9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like

a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

Children’s Message Ages 3 thru grade 5 are invited to come forward for a Bible lesson. Children’s Church During the second service, parents may choose to take their children (ages 2-6) to Children’s Church. There they will hear a Bible story, sing songs, learn a prayer and do a craft. They will return to the sanctuary during the offering.

Hymn of the Day To Jordan’s River Came Our Lord (Hymn 89) Sermon Isaiah 49: 1-6

Listen to me, you islands; hear this, you distant nations: Before I was born the LORD called me; from my birth he has made mention of my name. 2 He made my mouth like a sharp-ened sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me into a polished arrow and concealed me in his quiver. 3 He said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will dis-play my splendor.” 4 But I said, “I have labored to no purpose; I have spent my strength in vain and for nothing. Yet what is due me is in the LORD’s hand, and my reward is with my God.” 5 And now the LORD says— he who formed me in the womb to be his servant to bring Jacob back to him and gather Israel to himself, for I am honored in the eyes of the LORD and my God has been my strength— 6 he says: “It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth.”

Plan and Grow Information

There are letters available on the back table that detail a special ministry opportunity for 2018 as we are planning to raise funds to apply for a vicar for next summer. Please take a copy! We are seeking to raise $15,000 in order to call a vicar (intern) to serve here at Beautiful Savior July 2018-July 2019. That $15,000 will be matched by one of our members so that we can apply $30,000 total to our request. If you would like to make an offering, please clearly mark it on your offering envelopes or place in a separate marked envelope. Please also pick up a “Plan and Grow” Information sheet on the back table.

2018 Offering Envelopes Your 2018 offering envelopes can be picked up from the back table under the Soldier Support Board. Please do not use them until 2018 and at that time discard your offering envelopes from 2017 and previous years.

New Bible Information Class (BIC) Our next series of BIC classes will start Wednesday, January 17 at 6:30pm. This class is a general overview of the Word of God and the message of the Bible, and also serves as our pre-membership class. If you have not been through the BIC for a number of years, consider going through it again. Better yet, invite a friend along and attend the class with them! The class will meet on Wednesdays in the Fellowship hall.

New Bible Study Start the year in God’s Word. We are starting today a new Bible Study called, “The Idols We Never Knew We Had.” We all know about false idols in the Bible, but what are the idols that we are tempted to worship today. All are welcome. The class meets Sundays in the Fellowship Hall at 9:30am.

The Nicene Creed (We join in confession our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed.) We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Thank Offering “We love because he first loved us.” 1Jn 4:19 God’s love in sending Jesus to live, to suffer, and to die for each of us motivates the members of Beautiful Savior to show their love and thanks by returning a portion of their income to the Lord. Through these free will offerings, this congregation and its ministries are maintained.

Please stand.

The Sacrament P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

P: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, for in the wonder and mystery of his birth you have opened our eyes to the glory of your grace and renewed in our hearts the fervor of your love. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song:

Holy, Holy, Holy (Sanctus Isaiah 6:3; Matthew 21:9)

(Sanctus means “holy.” Used possibly as early as the second century, this canticle was in wide use among Christians in worship by the fourteenth century.)

1 O holy, holy, holy 2 Hosanna in the highest! Lord God of pow’r and might, How truly blest is he Your glory, earth and heaven Who in God’s name is coming In countless ways recite. To set his people free! Hosanna! Come and save us, He comes to bring salvation Lord God of hosts on high, And with his blood outpoured And in your grace and mercy Deliver us from bondage Receive our fervent cry. Hosanna Mighty Lord.

P: Blessed are you, O Lord of heaven and earth. We praise and thank you for sending your Son, Jesus Christ, and we remember the great acts of love through which he has ransomed us from sin, death, and the devil’s power.

By his incarnation, he became one with us. By his perfect life, he fulfilled your holy will. By his innocent death, he overcame hell. By his rising from the grave, he opened heaven.

Invited by your grace and instructed by your Word, we approach your table with repentant and joyful hearts. Strengthen us through Christ’s body and blood, and preserve us in the true faith until we feast with him and all his ransomed people in glory everlasting. C: Amen.

9

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Words of Institution

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had

given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. O Christ, Lamb of God (printed on p. 14) Please be seated.

Distribution (When we come to the Lord’s Supper, we receive the very body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ for the personal assurance of forgiveness. But the Lord’s Supper is also a confessional act, by which we confess a oneness of faith. We therefore ask only those who are confirmed members of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church or of sister Wisconsin Synod Lutheran churches to approach the altar. If anyone has a question about our communion practice or would like to become a communi-cant member of Beautiful Savior, please speak with the pastor after the service.)

Communion Hymn Christ, Your Footprints Through the Desert (Hymn 709, printed on p. 15)
