It is quite amazing to think back on the past three years and how much my life has changed, much to do with photography. I bought my first good camera in 2012 with two goals in mind. My goals were to capture images of my son’s hockey and learn about landscape/nature pho-tography. As my son grew, my camera bag grew, but I wasn’t making notable progress with landscape/nature images. I was getting frustrated and needed to make a change in my process of learning about photography.
In the spring of 2016 I had to make a very difficult choice to leave my family in Calgary for work in Saskatoon. Needing to make social connections in Saskatoon, my camera was the source. By chance I was invited to a Saskatoon Camera Club meeting and met with Pat Der-bowka. She made a very good impression on me with the club and that September I regis-tered with the SCC, meeting Maureen Sinclair, Rhea Preete and Amy Wildeman. Being young and motivated I added my name as a volunteer to setup tables and chairs for the weekly meet-ings. Little did I know that volunteering to move chairs would assign me to the executive of the club as “Facilities Dude”!
Joining the SCC was the best decision I ever made to learn more about photography. The cri-tique and judging sessions were excellent op-portunities to learn and understand what it takes to make compelling images. The SCC was very helpful, and I made some long-lasting friend-ships with the club members. There are too many people to mention at SCC and I thank everyone for pushing me to make more pur-poseful and creative images.
CONTENTS
When I returned to Calgary at the end of 2017, I wanted to continue with the camera club learning and joined the Foothills Camera Club. I completed the CAPA judging course last spring and have been very active in judging the club competitions. It has been an extremely busy year with all things photography and I am enjoying every minute of it.
Thank you Gleneath Camera Club for hosting the Maple Creek outing. It was a fantastic venue and I had a great time exploring Maple Creek with great friends made from SCC. I would also like to thank everyone for volunteering and helping with PRPA activities and initiatives. There are many passionate volunteers within the group and I appreciate everything you have done. I look forward to working for you all in the chair role and hope there are many opportu-nities to go out shooting. Any questions/comments/concerns, please contact me.

And so begins the 2018-2019 PRPA sea-son— the fall competitions should soon be sent to the judging clubs. This is my first year under-taking this position and I can only hope I can do as great a job as Gwen did.
We had a wonderful time at the Outing in Maple Creek in June, hosted by the Gleneath Camera Club. They did a great job and the scavenger hunts were a lot of fun. I hope to see a lot of entries from the Outing in both the print and digital categories.
There were three entries in the Showmanship Competition this year. Larry Easton placed first with his entry titled “Flora Seasons”; Second was Stan Hingston with “Hiking the Narrow Hills” and third the Rosetown Photography Group with “Up High”. Thank you for your entries; they were an enjoyable part of the ban-quet and awards.
The Fall competition entries are due Novem-ber 15th. This includes the Everest Club Compe-tition, open to member clubs whose membership is up-to-date as of November 15th, and The Hand of Man Competition which is open to individual members and all members belonging to a mem-ber club.
All registered attendees are eligible for the Annual Outing Competition (prints or digital).
The competitions open only to individual members are the Russell Competition (Opposites) with a theme of Open/Closed this year, the Fall Digital Competition, and the Sin-gle Song Digital Slideshow.
Please review the specific rules for the com-petitions you are entering. Just a couple of re-minders: 1) You cannot enter a photo in more than one competition – individual or club com-petition – in the same PRPA year. 2) Check the criteria for the competitions you are entering. We have clarified the definition of Nature to strictly exclude ‘any sign of man’. The portrai-ture categories are listed in Everest, Gerry Fish and Portfolio Print as “Best Portrait” therefore we are allowing portraits of animals as well as people. The Human Portraiture is, as the name implies, of humans only.
Thank you judging clubs and their club reps who are judging the competitions. I will be sending out the forms and information to judge the competitions on or about November 1st.
Image West is hosting the Annual Outing in 2019 on May 31st, June 1st and 2nd. Since it is early this year and I am involved with the plan-ning of it I would like the results and digital cop-ies of the winning photographs from the judging clubs by February 1st for the fall competitions. For the spring competitions in 2019 please have the results and digital copies of the winning pho-tographs to me no later than April 22nd to ensure that the winners’ photos are added to the slideshow for the outing. That gives the judging clubs only three weeks to get the competitions judged and the results sent in.
I recommend that you get digital copies of the entries in print competitions at the same time as getting the prints. This will save you time and effort trying to get digital copies of any winning photos later and maintain the surprise factor of the final results. Please feel free to phone or email me with any questions.
Good luck to everyone entering the contests,
Marlene

Contacting New Clubs
PRPA has 10 member clubs to date. There are many more clubs out there in Alberta, Saskatch-ewan and Manitoba that are potential members. If you know of a club, please contact them and invite them to join PRPA. Share your experienc-es with PRPA, show them the website, or give them copies of the PRPA promotional brochure. If you have the opportunity you could even do a presentation at one of their club meetings using the PRPA promotional slideshow. Both the bro-chure and slideshow can be downloaded from the Downloads section of the website. If you do not feel confident to do this yourself, pass on the contact information to any of the PRPA board members to follow up on.

Big news this fall! I have had a number of members expressing an interest in trying out the circuits. No matter how I worked things, at least one circuit would have too many partici-pants. Feedback on the 7-member circuit is that it is okay but they wouldn’t want to have more, therefore I have opted to set up a new circuit— PC#4.
New members hail from Alberta, Saskatche-wan and Manitoba, making this the first time there has been representation from all three Prairie Provinces.
The reorganization will result in Circuit #2 at the 7-person max, Circuit #3 & 4 with 6 and Circuits #1 with 5 members (3 veterans per cir-cuit). I think the slightly smaller circuits will be good for the newer members to start with and leaves the overall circuit participation at 24 with potential space for up to 4 more members.
Many of the print circuit members are in-volved with PRPA as Board members, competi-tion entrants and Outing attendees. For others, this is their only PRPA interaction and I am glad we are able to provide this forum for con-tinuing to foster a photographic community.
All the binders will be at the Saskatoon Cam-era Club registration night and will be on their way shortly after. If you do belong to a club and the binder happens to be in your possession when a club meeting is scheduled, feel free to take it in for Show and Tell. All of the circuits are displayed at each annual Outing. I know most people like to review their own circuit, but it is interesting to check out the others.
As this report has been longer than most, I will save my annual review of the benefits of the print circuits for a future report!

Annual General Meeting Maple Creek, SK. June 23, 2018
report by Stan Hingston from minutes by Rhea Preete
Chair Ann Dies brought the meeting to order at 7:01 pm. Thirty members attended representing: Gleneath (4), Regina (6), Saskatoon (6), Foothills (1), Image West (6), Rosetown (4) and Individual Members (3).
The agenda was adopted as amended and the minutes adopted as amended.
Treasurer Laird Wilson reported total revenue of $2,894.56 and expenditures of $2,546.22 leaving a net profit for the year of $348.34. The bank balance was $6,225.99 as of April 30, 2018. Lynn McCaslin and Dale Williams were appointed as reviewers again for 2019. A motion to keep the membership fees the same was passed.
Chair Ann Dies thanked the Gleneath Club for hosting the 2018 Outing, being held at Ghostown Blues near Maple Creek, SK. An instruction booklet is being prepared to assist future clubs when hosting the PRPA Outing. Ann thanked the executive for their support throughout her tenure as Chair and their willingness to volunteer for committees. She also thanked all the members for their participation in PRPA, particularly entering competitions and attend-ing meetings.
Gwen McNichol has completed her term as Com-petitions Coordinator. She said she found the posi-tion both challenging and rewarding, having made many friends and even learned a little more about photography! She noted that total entries were down by 70 over last year, mostly in the Gerry Fish club print competition. Hand of Man was also down by 26 entries and the Outing competitions by 29 entries.
Gwen reminded us not to enter the same photo in more than one competition. She also clarified the definitions of two categories which affect Everest, Gerry Fish and the Portfolio competitions—Nature now allows no sign of man, and Portrait may be of an animal as well as people.
Gwen offered a big thank you to Ann as Chair, the other board members, and especially to the Club Reps who are “extremely important members of this organization...”
Maureen Sinclair reported that the three print cir-cuits have a total of 20 members.
Stan Hingston reported that 32 paper copies of the Prairie Focus newsletter are printed for each is-sue (about half of PRPA members request a paper copy). The cost per member for the four issues is about $14.00 (plus postage when required) based on
$.25 per page. He prints them on his business color laser printer. Stan welcomed suggestions for improv-ing the content and composition of the newsletter.
Jim Turner reported on the changes to incorpora-tion registration. The Registrar at the Corporations Branch confirmed that PRPA is not properly regis-tered. Jim is in the process of re-registering PRPA as a non-profit membership corporation.
Shirley Gerlock reported on progress made with the PRPA archives. She spent many hours over the past year sorting boxes of papers into yearly files. In the process she learned a few interesting facts such as her first Outing was in Medicine Hat in 1979. Shirley asked for direction on what to do with boxes of slides from past competitions and many trophies. She also asked for members to send her any docu-ments that may be of interest for the archives.
A motion was passed that as a guideline to the competition judges the number of awards (first, sec-ond, third and HMs) not exceed 25% of the entries.
The 2019 Outing will be hosted by Image West at the Kinetic Park, Swift Current, on May 31-June 2 weekend.
Ann Dies as Chair and Gwen McNichol as Vice Chair and Competitions Coordinator were stepping down. Elections were held with results as follows:
Chair Dan Sigouin
Vice Chair vacant
Secretary Rhea Preete
Treasurer Laird Wilson
Membership Laird Wilson
Competition Coordinator Marlene Andrew
Print Circuit Coordinator Maureen Sinclair
Newsletter Editor Stan Hingston
Webmaster Scott Prokop
Archivist Shirley Gerlock
The meeting was adjourned at 8:03 pm.

PRPA Board Meeting Maple Creek, SK. June 25, 2018
report by Stan Hingston from minutes by Rhea Preete
Chair Dan Sigouin brought the meeting to order at 8:45 am. There was no prepared agenda. The minutes from the last board meeting were read and adopted.
Treasurer Laird Wilson reported that the 2017 Canmore Outing made a profit of $1,682.67. The profits were split three ways—to PRPA and the Saskatoon and Canmore clubs. Laird said that when more than one club hosts the Outing, 50% of the profits should go to PRPA and 50% split between co-hosting clubs. This will be made clear in the hosting guidelines being developed.
Dan said he is looking forward to learning more about PRPA.
There was nothing new in the reports that were not in the AGM reports.
Gwen and Ann have prepared a draft of Host-ing Guidelines for PRPA Outings. It will be available on the website for members to refer to.
David Ingoe and Curtiss Lund were appointed to be Members at Large.
Stan proposed some changes to the handbook and website to make the competition rules easier to find. Specifically, the category definitions should be included in the rules for the Everest, Gerry Fish and Portfolio competitions.
There was discussion about delays in changes being made to the website. Stan was appointed as an assistant webmaster with authority to make edits and uploads as directed by the Board.
The 2019 Outing hosted by Image West was briefly discussed.
The next board meeting was set for some time in March in Oyen, AB, unless something comes up that requires a fall meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:15 am.
Ed. Note: a board meeting has been called for October 27 to be held in Kindersley to deal with several issues which have come up since June: 1) the short notice for the AGM; 2) Corporate Registration with ISC; and 3) interpretation of bylaws.
The Foothills Camera Club has kicked off the 2018-2019 season with several new executive members and some internal changes to the judg-ing scoring framework. Excitement is also build-ing for the CAPA 2019 CCC conference that we are hosting. The event will be hosted at SAIT July 16-18. Please check out the website at www.ccc2019.ca.
The club meets the first and third Tuesday every month at the Loose Moose Theatre. The speaker list has been created for the year with many engaging speakers on numerous topics. Check our website www.foothillscameraclub.ca
The 2018-2019 calendar is set with competi-tions every 3 weeks for members to submit im-ages. Categories have changed slightly with new categories added to challenge the club members. “Urban” and “Night” have been added to the cal-endar and many members are excited to show-case their night sky images.
Being so close the mountains, FCC has been fortunate to offer excellent field trips. The Lake O’Hara trip saw a large group spend a weekend in one of the showcase locations in the world. The smoke from the summer was replaced by snow and by all accounts the weekend was fan-tastic. The image below is by FCC member Ken Wright from the Lake O’Hara field trip.
We look forward to many more field trips around the city and mountains throughout the year.

Maple Creek Outing, June 22-24, 2018 Report by Michelle Vold
The small but mighty Gleneath Camera Club pulled off another profitable outing – can you imagine with only a total of 35 people registered representing 5 different clubs and a few inde-pendents! By the time all the i’s were dotted and t’s crossed a profit of $775.86 was realized with $387.93 going each to PRPA and the Gleneath Camera Club.
Ghostown Blues Office [photo—M. Vold]
I’m hoping that most would agree “Ghostown Blues” [ghostownblues.com] was a very unique place, albeit kind of squishy and hot for the main events at the hall, but a great atmosphere and anyone who slept there enjoyed the whole expe-rience, from stick-chasing dogs, visiting cats, horses and meals at the chuck wagon – even the weather cooperated, hot and sunny during the day and a down-pour both nights.
And hey, what about all those photographs everyone has taken and entered – outstanding! We’re an awesome bunch aren’t we?
I found, and I’m sure others would agree, that presenter Ryan Wunsch [ryanwunsch.com] was
terrific. Fabulous photos and stories to go with them mixed with a great sense of humour.
Till next year.

Editor’s Report by Stan Hingston
Webmaster Report by Scott Prokop
Welcome to the Fall 2018 issue.
It was great to reconnect with old friends and make a few new ones at the Maple Creek Outing. I’m excited to have new members in the important positions of Chair and Competi-tions Coordinator. I expect Dan and Marlene will help lead PRPA well over the next few years. You will find their first reports in this issue. Dan also kindly provided a club report for Foothills Camera Club.
I’m trying a slightly more open appearance to the newsletter this issue. Did you notice? I removed all the text box outlines (except for the ones on this page) and used right justification to help separate the two columns. What do you think—is it an improvement? or not?
There is also a minor change to the Contacts page. To make room for the two Members-at-Large I deleted the mailing addresses for some of the officers and directors, namely the Chair, Past Chair, Print Circuit, Website and Archi-vist. Should anyone need this information they only need to phone or email and ask them for it.
Also note the change in club representative for the Lloydminster Photography Club. Wel-come and a big thank you to Brian Muzichuk.
The 2017-18 Gallery of winning images is
now up on the website. The galleries go back to
2009-10 and is a great way to spend an hour or
two browsing through some fantastic photos.
Watch for the Outing Host Club Guidelines
recently drafted by Ann and Gwen to be posted
soon. Send any suggestions to Ann or Dan.
Remember, you can find the Handbook, cur-
rent Bylaws and all the competition rules in the
Downloads menu at the top right of the Home
Page.
