Its alternate name, Turkey Foot, describes its 3-branched seed heads. Indian Grass Sorghastrum nutans Blooms: July–Sept Height: 3–7’ A prevalent species in the tall grass prairie, Indian Grass is an upright, clump-forming plant varying from yellow to orange in the fall. Look for a large seed head and bright yellow pollen sacs. Showy Goldenrod Solidago speciosa Blooms: July–Oct Height: 2–7’ One of many types of goldenrod in this region, Showy Goldenrod bears columnar clusters of yellow flowers. Tall Ironweed Vernonia gigantea Blooms: July–Oct Height: 3–7’ e hardy Tall Ironweed produces deep purple blooms comprised of 13–30 tiny flower heads. e dried stems are dark brown with tan seed heads.
