PRESIDENT'S REPORT

"I love a sunburnt country, A land of sweeping plains, Of ragged mountain ranges, Of droughts and flooding rains."

Over recent seasons we have experienced droughts where water storage levels dropped to a point where water restrictions would have meant that centre wickets could not be watered. It prompted Cricket Victoria to ask us to leave covers off to allow rain to get onto the centre table.

However, all this seemed a million years ago this season, where most of us old timers cannot recall a season with as many interruptions as we did have.

So it seems that Dorothy McKellar may have been right in her ballad, in that it is drought or floods but little in between. However, we did enjoy playing on lush green fields and Toorak Park and Como centre wickets were excellent again.

Upon reflection, the season was a very successful one for the Prahran Cricket Club and the momentum continues. One wonders how much more successful it might have been if we had not been robbed of several victories where weather intervened when we were in strong positions. The 1st XI final at Carlton goes without saying but the washout against Essendon robbed us of very valuable points.

So please allow me to reflect on a few of the major achievements:

• 4th in the Club Championship

• 1st XI played in their 3rd successive final series.

• 2nd XI Runners Up after finishing on top of the ladder

• Overall joint winner of the first T20 Club Competition

The Club Championship success tells a great story. To achieve such success, you need all four teams being competitive and this season all 4 teams achieved very good success and whilst the 1's and 2's played finals, with a little bit of luck, it was not inconceivable that we could have had 4 teams play finals this year.

To the Coaching and leadership group for this season, our sincere thanks to you all.

Andrew Walton's drive focus and organization of the playing group was outstanding. The preparation for each game during the week was first class and to see the way that each team prepared for the game on a Saturday sent a very loud message to our opposition that we have come to play and that we were up for any challenge that was going to be thrown at us.

The game is played 90% above the shoulders and I honestly believe that in this regard, we were as well prepared as we have ever been before. Thank you Andrew.

Neil Schlittler continued his growth as 1st XI Captain and led the team extremely well. Such was the indication of his comfort in the role that his personal performances reached new heights and maturity, never so more evidenced than his domination of the T20 competition and selection in the Premier Cricket Team of the year. Well done on a great season and thank you.

Neil has indicated that he will not take on this role in 2011/12 due to the growing demands of a young family and increasing work commitments. However, we are thrilled that he will play on next season. Thank you for all that you have delivered to our club in your leadership role and we look forward to more excellence from you in the future.

It was great to have Julien Wiener back in the fold and playing again this season. After a couple of seasons as a Victorian Selector, Julien displayed outstanding leadership and led the 2nd XI brilliantly. With a very talented young playing group, we have seen many players perform well but several demonstrated with sustained performances that they are ready for the next step. However, not only are they capable of taking the step but all indications are that they will be hugely successful. Julien's deputy this year was Chris Williamson who skippered the side in half a dozen or so games. Julien's stewardship of Chris and their similar thinking patterns meant that the transition between them was largely seamless from a player perspective.

Julien received the club's highest honor at the Presentation Night where he was awarded Life Membership of the Club. A great honor that was very well deserved and you will see a great article from Leader Newspaper's Paul Amy later in this report, which indicates just how much it meant to Julien to receive this honor. However, from the Committee's perspective, it was hard to imagine a more worthy recipient. Thank you Julien for all you do and to Chris, we thank you and all observers have stated that you clearly took another leadership step this season.

We welcomed Callum Appleyard back into the fold this season and he took on the leadership role in the 3rd XI. It is always one of the toughest gigs in the club with constant player rotation up and down, however Callum did an excellent job for the club this season and we are extremely grateful that he accepted the challenge and did so with great effectiveness. Whilst balancing the challenge of winning and giving valuable game time to our future stars, Callum was also able to show his class as a player and led from the front showing the younger quicks about the line and length to bowl. Thanks Callum, your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Andrew Lennie took control of the 4th XI again this season. You tend to forget just how young Andrew is when you realize this is his 3rd season in the role. I was very pleased to see Andrew's leadership take another step this season. We witnessed a self‐confident leader who was prepared to back his judgment and the improved performance of the side was, I believe, no coincidence and related strongly to Andrew's own leadership performance. Thank you Andrew for what we have given us in this role and for your commitment and dedication to developing young players whilst at the same time, developing your own game further.

We had the honour of welcoming Chris Rogers to the club as a player and also Assistant Coach – Batting. What a marvelous young man Chris is and the experience he brought to our club was invaluable. His work on developing batting skills was greatly appreciated by all that had this direct involvement, but "Buck" also provides a much needed element in a club in the way of "fun". Officially, welcome aboard Chris and we hope that we have your talents at the club in all capacities for many seasons to come.

David Longhurst joined us in the second half of the season. Known to many around the club for his excellence in the junior development area, David focused on batting skills and the feedback I have received is certainly wonderful testimony that he complimented Chris Rogers' fine work and helped us to enjoy some marvelous late season centuries across all grades. David will be back again with us next season and this can only add to the strength of the coaching panel and club in general.

There are 3 people that I love to mention that are all very similar in their approach. Quiet, extremely efficient and just do all the little things that so many take for granted. The three are James Higgs, Karl Hieser and Stuart Mack. James was again our 1st XI scorer, Karl again looked after his beloved 2's and Stuart took on the role of Team Manager for the 1st XI. Thank you gentleman for being who you are and continuing to serve our great club so well. Long may it continue!

Such was the respect of the Club for Stuart's efforts in not only taking on the Team Manager role but also a stellar performance organizing social functions; he was awarded the Ian Crawford President's Award for the best contribution to our club by a non‐playing member.

The Best Clubman Award was given to Brendan McGuinness, a very worthy winner indeed. BJ has worked on the Junior Development program for many years and the quality of talent that joined our club from this program this year speaks volumes for the work he does. As so much of the work BJ does is in the off‐

season, not everyone gets to see and appreciate the amount of time and dedicated effort that goes into it. The program is now widely regarded as the best amongst Premier Clubs, as is evidenced by the continual requests we receive from young talent to join our program. BJ's legacy to our club in driving this program will be felt for many years to come and we are thrilled that BJ has again committed to driving the program again this season. However, one of the features that Parents often comment on is the fact that BJ is able to get so many senior players to join the programs and pass on their experience. This is a major plus for our club and thank you to all those that gave up their Sunday mornings to support BJ and the program.

Off the field, "the general", John Zarb continued to deliver efforts way above and beyond his Position Description as Administration Manager. John did it all this season. He actively marketed our club far and wide and the results saw us host two days of Victoria T20 trial games between Christmas and New Year, a Victorian 2nd XI 4‐day game, Cricket Australia Under 23 T20 games, the Premier 2nd XI final along with a host of other games for local associations. This all meant many long hours at the club and many sacrificed weekends. Add to this his sponsorship focus which saw the Orrong Hotel join us, many sponsors identified and secured for the Stonnington Gift, not to mention the Thursday Night Awards and of course, The Wignells BBQ Player of the Year.

John has strong ties with the media and worked this strongly to our advantage this year. This in addition to the support of Paul Amy, Brad Beitzel and Howard Leigh means that there is a constant flow of positive energy around our club and you can never underestimate the real value of such. A special thanks also go to Paul, Brad and Howard.

John won a Cricket Victoria Media Award this year for an interview he conducted on Casey Radio about clubs in the North of Victoria that were badly impacted by the floods. Well done John and a very deserving award for someone who gives so much of his time freely to the betterment of cricket in this state.

John, thank you never seems to be enough. Please be assured that you are held in the highest regard by all at the club and your tireless work does not go unnoticed and is greatly appreciated. We are a much better club in so many regards to have you with us. There is no better example of this than when he was trying to find the Rooster a new home!

We are so blessed to have David Jukes continue to provide his loving support to the club. Like BJ, so much of what David does is rarely seen as it is done when others are not at the club. David is a dream to have at the club and I am personally so grateful for his commitment and I know all of the members are as well. You are the essence of what makes a club great, the selfless dedication to going the extra mile, the "nothing‐is‐too‐much‐trouble" attitude and generally passing on so many valuable pieces of information that just keep you focused where you should be. Thank you David for who you are and all you do

Ian Crawford is another of those wonderful "Prahran People". A lifetime as President and Committee member, Ian just keeps on giving. Thank you Ian for everything you mean to the club and for all that you keep doing for the club and me personally. I am truly blessed to have you as a mentor and a friend.

Thank you, John Raglus for being Vice President, Chairman of Selectors, Cricket Victoria Delegate and Scoreboard Manager. John, we have experienced another great season of wonderful support that is greatly welcomed by all at Prahran. Thanks also to Kirk Raglus for the thankless task of running our old and antiquated scoreboard. It is not an easy job, particularly with the introduction of T20 but the work of Kirk and the cooperation between he and James and Karl means that you can always know what the state of a game is. My number 1 goal is to give Kirk a whole new level of Job Satisfaction and comfort for next season.

Thank you Annie and Michel Murphy for again doing such a wonderful job in organising, preparing and delivering the Thursday Night meals. I sense that the meals went to a new level this year and it is testament that after all these years that Annie and Michael want to keep giving more. You cannot under estimate what a valuable part of the club’s culture Thursday Night meals are. Thank you to you both for the wonderful contribution you make but also for your friendship, your care and your love of the Prahran Cricket Club.

Thanks also need to extended to Brett and Leanne Wilcox. Brett has been a wonderful breath of fresh energy on the committee with a brilliant "can do" attitude. Thank you Brett for all you have done to

improve this club and we look forward to having your energy, expertise and wisdom for many years to come. Leanne was marvelous in helping out on Thursday Nights, Saturday afternoon teas and together with Annie, Michael and Brett putting together this year's Presentation Night. Those who were at the presentation night will attest to the quality of the meal and the quality of the way the meals were delivered and in general how well the Lux Pavilion scrubbed up. It was an enormous effort by these four people and one that I will not allowed to be repeated again in the future. Thanks Leanne, your wonderful contributions were greatly appreciated.

We took the step of broadening the support we provide players on Match Days. Instead of just providing sandwiches and fruit during the tea break, we extended this to provide lunch as well. The idea being to position ourselves ahead of what our competitors provide but also further reinforce the reputation we have of being the most hospitable club in the competition. Both Chris Seymour and Rosemary Schlittler took a fantastic lead in helping to prepare, serve and clean up after the two main breaks. You did a great job ladies and a further special touch was seeing what the club purchased being supplemented with some brilliant home cooking. Thank you for adding another special Prahran touch to match days and for doing it with such grace.

Rick Sykes kindly agreed to continue in his role as Club Treasurer. Thank you Rick for not only giving us well prepared and concise numbers but for your passion and drive to take this club to another level. Always looking for an opportunity or an angle we may not have considered. I love the way Rick thinks and his advice, support and guidance is a huge benefit to the club and myself personally. Rick was also a huge contributor to the Stonnington Gift and I will talk more about this later.

After many years on the Committee, Paul Sealey will take a well earned break after this AGM. Thank you Paul, like so many others much of what you do goes unseen. Your mentoring of the younger players (some might say leading them astray) is invaluable and whenever a hand is needed, you are there to support and invariably contacting other players to get them involved. You have been a wonderful servant of the club and hopefully you can sit back and reflect on your time on the committee and feel that we have and will continue to move forward.

There is also a good‐bye from Chris "Gus" Garcia. Chris has served us well on the Committee for many years and in tandem with Paul the organiser of many of our recent social functions. We appreciate a new job close to home, which is not so close to the club makes it difficult. We thank you for all you have done as a player and a Committee Member and whilst we accept you will not be part of the Committee next season, we sincerely hope this is just a break and that you will return to this role when you have a little more free time in your life. Long live the Barbariöns!

To Liam Murphy and Isaac Gnieslaw thank you for taking on a role with the Committee. It was Liam's first year on the Committee and we have lost count for Isaac. Your support and assistance throughout the year has been greatly appreciated by all.

Our very special thanks must go to Mr David Mandie and Mrs Evelyn Danos. David is the founder and Evelyn the current CEO of James Richardson / JR Duty Free. David and Evelyn have been wonderful supporters of our club for such a long period and their continued support, encouragement and generosity is truly appreciated by everyone at the club. JR Duty Free were kind enough to agree to be our playing clothing sponsor for this season and the next two. There support allowed us to be able to purchase the equipment and provide each of the players with a Two‐Day and One‐Day Kit, plus training gear, track suit etc at no personal cost. This is an excellent benefit to a player and to David, Evelyn and the whole Mandie family, we love you and thank you for continuing to provide us with so much help.

To hear David recognized at a Cricket Victoria lunch by CV Chairman, Geoff Tamblyn in glowing terms speaks volumes about what David has not only contributed to our club but the game in general and sport in this country. Just once for you David, Go Tigers!

To Lucas and the team at Genesis Fitness in Prahran, thank you so much for your exceedingly generous support this season. It was great to have you on board, the benefit provided to all the playing group is quite unbelievable and just being associated with such a young and progressive group of young people is very

healthy for our club. We hope that we can return your support by continuing to bring focus to the local community of just the support you provide to non profit organizations such as ours.

Thank you Santo Caruso, for but just being you. You continue to be a very generous supporter and whilst this is greatly appreciated and welcomed, it is just as important to have your always happy and chirpy demeanor around the club.

To Moti Mahal, La Porchetta and Human Capital, thank you all for your very special support received this season. We hope that we can continue the relationship in 2011/12.

In terms of thank you's, I would like to express, on behalf of the club, my sincere appreciation to (Sir) Peter Norman and the East Malvern Community Bank Branch – Bendigo Bank (EMCBBBB).

The EMCBBBB contributed $20,000 toward the Stonnington Gift this year that allowed us to be the 3rd richest professional foot race in Victoria (Year 1). There are already strong indications that next year's gift will provide a substantial return to the club. Without the help and support of the EMCBBBB, Peter Norman and the man who suggested Peter take on the role as Chairman, Rick Sykes, the gift would never have happened. We will struggle to go forward as a club if we cannot continually find new ways to get funds into the club. This avenue has significant potential and for the personal energy of both Peter and Rick we are truly appreciative of all that has been done and continues to be done for our club.

The idea of the Stonnington Gift was borne from discussions with former Athlete and Coach, Andrew Muhlhan and John Zarb. They met when Andrew was training athletes on Toorak Park and the whole concept grew from there. However, for these two gentlemen, it did not stop at a great idea, both driving and giving enormous amounts of the personal time to make it the success it was. Andrew and John, thank you for giving us the idea but more importantly investing so much of your time to make it reality.

We were blessed to have the expertise of David Culbert from Jump Media. The man whose business is responsible for running the Stawell Gift not to mention many other Melbourne icon sporting events, provide invaluable in helping us chase down sponsors such as Coles Supermarkets and generally just guiding us in the right direction. We hope to have David involved again this year as we take it to another level and then another level the following year.

The effort of our Curators, Mark Doyle and Shane Townsend in getting Toorak Park ready for the gift was a massive over‐and‐above effort. The ground looked first class and many athletes commented that it was the best track they had run on. Nothing was too much trouble for the guys and it typified their attitude throughout the whole season where we were provided with the best playing facilities in the competition.

Sadly, we will not have Mark Doyle next season as he has accepted a promotion and moved to the City of Whitehorse. Mark will be sadly missed but we sincerely thank him for all that he has done for us and taking Toorak Park to the level we all hoped it would be. Good luck for the future Mark and we hope that one day we will have you back at Toorak Park in some capacity.

Finally, the Gift acknowledgements would not be complete without thanking all the players for their support on the night. The fact that you were there in great numbers, did whatever you could and presented so well is greatly appreciated and spoke volumes about who we are as a club. Thank you for giving up your Friday Night for the club.

One person who does not currently hold official capacity at our club but is a favorite son, is Bryce McGain. Bryce is in my view the best Leg Spinner/Spin Bowler in this country. He should at very least still be a regular member of the State side and potentially the Australian side. I personally believe it is a disgrace that despite being good enough from an ability perspective that he is over looked for younger players of lesser ability. If this was the behavior of any business in Australia, there would be strong social and legal consequences for such behavior. We as a club will fight to ensure that Bryce gets the opportunities in the future he richly deserves.

However, we were truly blessed to have so much of Bryce's time this season and he demonstrated just why he is so good by not only winning the awards you would expect of him but also being named in the Premier

Cricket Team of the Year. Bryce, we hope that the opportunity to play at a higher level will come again in the future and congratulations on your achievements in the game and for our club this season.

It is hard to thank your son when you know the boys will give the appropriate amount of stirring following, but it cannot go without acknowledgement the significant contribution that Chris made in getting the new uniforms designed, orders taken and deliveries made in time. An enormous amount of personal effort went into this and on behalf of the club, we thank you.

Thank you also to Ryan Heywood whose clothing company we used to have the gear made up. Swiv was overseas at the time and managed to make it all happen remotely which is greatly appreciated. The new uniforms look great and thank you for your support and patience in helping us get to this point.

Last but not least, thanks to Graeme Hole. Graeme is a very good man who has given his heart and soul to the club this season. Another who just goes about things without fuss, we are so much richer for having you part of the family and sincerely hope that you remain and become even more actively involved in the future. Thanks Graeme for all you have done for us.

I have previously indicated that this would be my last season in the role as President. However, there is unfinished business and if you will have me again, with the blessing of my wife Michele and our 3 boys I would like to continue in the role of President for at least 1 more season.

To anyone I missed in personally thanking, thank you. There are so many efforts from so many special people that it is hard to capture them all in such a report. Please understand that everything that is done is greatly appreciated by all.

We as a club have so much to look forward to in the future. We are approaching a point where our debt is close to being wiped out, the Stonnington Gift plus our growing sponsorship base has the potential to take us forward and for the first time in recent memory, the club will have a healthy Balance Sheet position. From a playing perspective the moment grows and serious success is now within our grasp.

ADMINISTRATION MANAGER'S REPORT

The season came and the season went – although as short as it was there were many highlights for our club but yet again no silverware.

Congratulations firstly to our two senior sides on making the finals for the first time in such a very long time. So long in fact we had to go to the record books to seek clarification, over 25 years in fact. To Neil and his boys well done and who knows what could have been achieved if the rain had not come down at Princes Park in the Quarter Final. Neil steps down as captain and we thank him for his time, dedication and commitment in this role. We look forward to watching Neil just as a player next season.

To Julien and his troops a big thank you on providing many hours of excitement during the season for our supporters. Making the Grand Final was a very big achievement for these guys who will no doubt go on to become better cricketers for our club in the future. Julien, watching you lead and educate these boys along the way was a highlight in itself and your award at season's end for Life Membership capped it all off.

Other highlights at Toorak Park included the second season of games in the Cricket Australia Futures League competition in the T20 form of the game. We hosted three days of wonderful cricket in December along with a four‐day State Second XI game, New South Wales versus Victoria, in January.

Bushrangers Trial games were also held at Toorak Park in late December as a warm up for the KFC Big Bash. All players and officials had nothing but praise for our facility and are looking at returning again next season.

The inaugural Stonnington Gift was held at our facility on Friday February 11th under lights. Prizemoney was over $29,000 on the night which included $15,000 for the main race. The night was marred by bad weather but the modest crowd and spirit of our volunteers could not be dampened. We look forward to a bigger and better gift next season at about the same time on the calendar.

Toorak Park was the venue of choice for the Premier Second Eleven final over two days. An improvement on the season before and we hope to land the main game next season with all things going well.

All of the above could not have been achieved by firstly congratulating our hard working ground staff from the City of Stonnington – Mark Doyle, Shane Townsend and co. Many extra hours were put in by the boys to ensure that Toorak Park was presented professionally each and every time. We wish Mark Doyle all the very best in his move to City of Whitehorse and on behalf of the committee we say a job well done.

The man behind our ground staff, Mr Peter Murray, is ever‐committed in ensuring our club does not get left behind when requests are presented to him on a regular basis for both Toorak and Como Parks.

I would like to take the opportunity of thanking the following people that continue to support our club and help make Prahran Cricket Club a better place to be:

The City Of Stonnington: Chris Brown and Ninetta Inocca from Recreation Services who have the thankless jobs of looking after all sporting clubs in our community but ensure Toorak Park is always looked after.

Cricket Victoria: Peter Binns and Scott Ashworth for their help and assistance during the season on all matters!

All of our sponsors we are for ever thankful to you for our keeping our club alive and functioning. Please refer to the Annual Report for the full listing but special thanks to firstly David Mandie and Evelyn Danos from JR Duty Free. I would need many hours of time to write about what you have done for this club, most recently our players are fitted out in uniforms and playing attire for the next three years – thanks to you. To Coach Andrew Walton, his coaching staff Chris Rogers, David Longhurst and the selection committee headed by John Raglus I say thank you for a good season, one that you can all look back on and be happy with. A solid foundation has been laid to now build on.

Andrew, I'm sure that if your same work ethic is shown along with continued support from our Committee then that elusive First Eleven premiership is not too far away. I wanted to also mention Andrews's preparation with the playing group was first class and his expertise and ability with electronic media and MyCricket helped make my job a whole lot easier. The club website is now first class and will get even better thanks to Andrew.

Finally to Phil Williamson, our President, many thanks for all what you have done to ensure that Prahran Cricket Club is a place that we all enjoy being at. Your professionalism, continued dedication and the way you conduct yourself as a person is what we love about you. The countless hours you spend away from home with work and the club deserves to bring reward and if you can just hang in there for a little while longer I'm sure it will. OBITUARIES

MORTON "MORT" HENRY ADAMS

1916‐2011

PCC Cap Number 194

Mort joined Prahran Cricket Club in season 1934/35 and played his first game in the third eleven. His inaugural first eleven match was in 1937/38 and went onto play a total of 23 senior matches through to 1939/40, when he enlisted in the Second World War.

He returned to our Club in 1944/45 and assisted for many years nurturing players in our lower elevens, including captaining the fourths.

Mort joined the Committee in 1962 and served until 1983. He was Honorary Treasurer, Vice‐President, a Selector, and was ultimately honoured with Life Membership. A proud inductee in the Hall of Fame, Mort was also Club Patron from 1983/84 until 2006.

A true gentleman, highly respected, and a tireless worker for many decades for the Club he adored.

Mort also instituted the Stan Stephens Memorial Trophy for the most outstanding fielder each season in the first eleven. This was named after his late father‐in‐law, who himself was a champion player, and participated in many senior premierships.

ANTHONY "TONY" JUDGE RYAN

1933‐2010

PCC Cap Number 264

Tony played in our first eleven, but tennis was where he had a most revered career. A leading Australian player who then turned to administration and served around the world on many committees. He was Australian Davis Cup chairman of selectors and involved in bringing to the fore many World champion Australian tennis players, in our prestige years in this sport.

Our deepest sympathy is also expressed to President Phil Williamson, who lost his mother‐in‐law, and to Life Member Mark Nelson, who lost his father during the course of the season.

The Club extends its condolences to all those who lost loved ones over the past 12 months.

COACH'S REPORT

By allowing a cricket season to run a full duration, through to the absolute last day available for competition, we as a club are able to make proper and considered judgement as to where we now stand. The experiences gained by all the players who contributed directly on field, was equally matched by those among us that perform the many off‐field tasks of support. The effort for these becomes lessened as the involvement extends into late March. Still however, we unfortunately have won nothing, but the improvement has substance.

Overall it could be stated that as a playing group and a club we were able to advance based on recent improvements (acknowledgement is fully due to Neivandt & Gumley). From here though, we will learn first hand the harsh reality that when converted from the "hunter" to the "hunted" – any deviation from proper preparation and failing to behave as a unified team, creates cracks that are able to be exploited.

The overall goal in every match was to "walk off intact" (batting) and "take the ten" (bowling) to achieve a positive variance between runs per wicket. If this could be consistently achieved then the results would follow. Pleasingly every grade was able to finish with a record on the right side of the ledger. With a small amount of good fortune, all teams could have been involved with finals. The 3rd and 4th XI just missing in the last round, on joining the 1st and 2nd XI who achieved the dual honour for the first time since 1984/85.

For the quality in conditions, adopting a disciplined and practical approach to ground management that made available an extremely high standard of wicket and ground surfaces – Mark Doyle and Shane Townsend – the effort was exceptional. Further acknowledged by the number of matches at a higher level, which Toorak Park was exposed to this season.

Thanks to all of the players involved in captaincy during the season – Schlittler, Coates (briefly), Wiener, Williamson, Appleyard and Lennie. As best as we are able to plan and prepare at the season start it is a difficult balance of competitive art and science. Although as a group we are significantly stronger for the combination of views and experience.

James Higgs, Karl Hieser, John Raglus, Kirk Raglus, Alan Wilkins, Paul Morrey, Peter Lidstrom and the scoreboard apprentices – always entertaining on match day when combining at Toorak Park or Como Park with all of the important numbers and details readily available.

To Neil Schlittler, an enormous achievement of sustained leadership to captain the 1st XI to three consecutive seasons of finals, two seasons of one‐day finals and undefeated in T20 this season. This has established the hunger and awareness amongst our group where a genuine opportunity to firmly place the True Blues at the upper end of the competition is now possible. This legacy will be embraced by the club and the transition could not have been timed better.

To David Jukes, we were nearly able to deliver something memorable, worthy of your unwavering energy and input. I personally have enjoyed the opportunity in my cricket career given to me by this great club to be able to resume a treasured relationship. The rock shows little signs of slowing, we as a playing group have a large debt to repay for your valued services.

To John Zarb, the energy and enthusiasm that you bring to Toorak Park provides the extra adrenalin shot into our collective True Blue veins that is needed for us to flourish as a club and win the deserved recognition from the whole cricket and sporting community.

CAPTAINS' REPORTS

1st Eleven

Rain Rain go away, Come again another Sunday! Or at least in 1 hour when we might have wrapped up the Carlton tail.

Season 2010/11 started with high hopes, just as the past few seasons have. Losing our most consistent player in recent times, Cam Huckett, to Perth was made easier by recruitment of Victorian fringe players Salpietro and Forsyth and the return home of gloveman and talisman Sam Coates from a stint in Canberra.

New coaching staff and even a new playing kit gave us a much needed boost approaching the one‐day fixtures in October. An amazing 4 of the first 6 games were affected by rain or completely washed out. A frustrated cricketer at home on a rainy Saturday afternoon doth not a happy wife maketh. The playing group was not too happy either. Any momentum, form or consistent training was tough for all involved. Our form was either brilliant or horrendous. Not much in between.

The new T20 format in the middle of the season saw us sweep the 4 games and get our season back on track. The obliteration of Melbourne under lights in Shepparton was a great evening for the club and the band of loyal supporters who made the trip.

With no rain after Christmas our form was expectable without being brilliant. Due to the rain early on the ladder was very close. An extra loss would have seen us out of the finals. An extra win would have seen us top 2. In the end we finished 6th and faced Carlton at Princes Park. A wonderful partnership between the ever‐improving Coates and McGain put us in a winning position posting 270. On day 2 we had them 5/95 with 48 overs to play when the biggest black cloud seen in Melbourne engulfed the city. We slowly watched it roll towards us and wash our season away. With 5th placed Dandenong just beating 8th placed Frankston in the final, it was the season that got away.

Highlights of the season were the continual development of De Bolfo and Seymour with the bat and the consistent bowling from "veterans" Sealey and McGain. As a group we shared the load and enjoyed each others individual success. To chase 200 off 25 overs against Richmond in round 2 showed what we are about. The result at Melb Uni also showed what character we possessed.

I think we are the most experienced first eleven in the competition heading into next season. I would like to think the improvement we have shown in recent years will be able to take 2 more small steps to Premiership glory. Players such as Wild, Seymour, De Bolfo, Coates and Salpietro are close to being the best at what they do in Premier Cricket. A fraction of personal improvement from this group and the development of other first team players will see us playing cricket well into March next year.

On behalf of the entire playing group I would like to thank Andrew Walton and his coaching staff, Stuart Mack, James Higgs, Karl Hieser and Alycia Baxter for their outstanding and much appreciated input into our season. We also would like to thank President Phil Williamson and his staff for their fantastic off field support.

2nd Eleven

After a slow start to the season the 2nd XI played consistently well enough to finish on top of the ladder after the home and away games.

A washed out quarter final followed by a memorable semi final victory saw the team play in the Grand Final against the experienced Geelong at Toorak Park.

Our batting display meant Geelong were under no real pressure and the season came to a disappointing end.

There were, of course, many positives. Here are a few of them.

• Most importantly, we had a whole lot of fun and enjoyed our cricket and each other's company.

• There was a real sense of appreciating and enjoying our team mates' successes and understanding for individuals when things didn't quite work out.

• We all learnt a lot about our cricket, what works, what doesn't, what to do in a whole variety of situations and I hope that journey was beneficial.

From an individual player perspective, there were a few stand outs:‐

• Steven Singh's hard work and deserved promotion to the 1st XI where he performed creditably.

• Lloyd Everett's consistent improvement and his willingness to take on a big work load

• Chris Williamson's leadership, maturity and high standards and expectations

• Adam Bull's all round efforts and shot‐making at the top of the order

• Matthew Wilcox's physical presence on the ground and his ability to force himself into the game – demonstrated by his long and sustained performances with both the bat and ball from the first to the last game.

• Vinay Parikh's first half of the season where he played an important role in giving our bowlers enough runs to play with and apply pressure to the opposition

• Michael Nyary's early season match‐winning efforts, his eternal optimism and then his enthusiastic and important presence around the place even though he was unable to get on the park.

• Shane Townsend's toughness and competitiveness when we needed it.

• Liam Murphy's wonderful innings in the semi final against Richmond which clearly put on show his talent and ability to perform when it really mattered.

The foundation is being laid and it's up to these players and the next generation of young talent (Woodgate/Bricker/Taylor/Hutton/Long/Serry/O'Connor/Lidstrom plus others) to establish Prahran as a consistently successful and powerful club.

This will not be an accident and the challenge for all of us is to build on the success of 2010/2011 and we must continue to improve – that's not negotiable.

To those younger players in the 2nd XI who made such big strides – do not rest on what you've done. To move up to Premier Cricket, which is a tough school, you must maintain all of your efforts, at a minimum.

The only thing that matters now is the first ball of season 2011/2012!

Thanks to all who provided so much support during the year – from Karl Hieser (whose advice and insights into the game cannot be underestimated), to Neil Schlittler whose leadership over the past couple of years has given the club a harder, more competitive edge, to Andrew Walton for his endless work and attention to detail, to Richo for his team managership during the finals, to the Thursday night cooking crew (the Wilcox's, Murphy's, etc) which is an integral part of our club culture, to John Raglus for his eternal common sense and support as Chairman of Selectors and finally to Phil Williamson, John Zarb and the Committee for providing the outstanding facilities at Toorak Park.

3rd Eleven

Prahran 3rd XI started the campaign full of enthusiasm after a hard pre‐season and was hoping to hit the ground running. The side was full of youth and several players were making their debuts for the club. It was going to be a tough opening weekend with back‐to‐back games to start our proceedings. The side came up against Footscray Edgewater in Round 1 and the signs looked reasonable in the first session. A great opening partnership quickly followed by a massive batting collapse saw the boys lose the opening game.

It wasn't going to get any easier from there as the boys came up against a strong Richmond side and again the batting let them down and for consecutive games were bowled out for under 100. With rain affecting Round 3, Carlton was next on the radar, who again were going to be tough opponents. With rain affecting this game also, Prahran were yet again let down by batting skill errors.

Still without a win the boys were up for every game and were improving with bat and ball, it would only be a matter of time before a win would happen. Moving in to the 2‐day format Rounds 6 & 7 would yet again see rain affect the results but great signs of improvement were seen. Prahran in both games were able to post big scores of over 200 with top order players stringing together healthy partnerships.

The boys didn't have to wait much longer as the following week would see the first win in a great bowling and batting display. Everyone contributed with bat and ball and the side was unlucky to just miss out on the 10 points. The side now had some momentum going in to the next 3 rounds of T20. The T20 campaign saw a rejuvenated Prahran and some great spells of bowling and individual batting displays brought about three great convincing wins going in to the Christmas break.

The run unfortunately came to an end in a hard fought game with top of the table Melbourne. Following was yet another frustrating loss to St Kilda after a batting collapse – yet again – but we knew there was still better to come. In following weeks, Prahran chalked up consecutive wins against North Melbourne and Frankston, which was setting the side up for a finals berth.

A crunch game was to come against Northcote with the winner almost guaranteed a spot in the finals and on a dodgy wicket, the toss didn't go the way of Prahran and were skittled for just over 100. So it came down to the last game of the season against Melbourne Uni with a win all but securing a spot in the finals. The side produced one of its best batting displays with a score of 8/270 with a brilliant knock from first year player Rowan Bricker (112). The boys fought hard with ball all day but couldn't seem to find the last 2 wickets and Uni forced a draw, knocking Prahran out of the finals race.

A season of mixed results but with the quality of players the 3rds have it will only be a matter of time before they taste success.

4th Eleven

2010/11 was undoubtedly one of the most frustrating seasons of cricket ever. Rain affected as many as 10 of our 17 scheduled matches; including four games that were washed out. At the same time, however, we had an enthusiastic group of players, which made the experience much more enjoyable for the team. Of the 31 players to play for the 4th XI in 2010/11, 17 were U19 or younger. This youth factor seemed to naturally breed energy and enthusiasm amongst the team, even during a lengthy winless run early in the season. In keeping with recent years, there was a large turnover of players during the 2010 off‐season. Consequently, the 4th XI tended to field some relatively inexperienced sides and this resulted in some inconsistent performances. (In the round 4 game against Carlton, for example, we had 8 players with less than 7 games experience!) Nonetheless, there were some extraordinary highs.

From a team perspective, the highpoint was over the Christmas‐New Year period when we won four games in five. The only loss was by three runs to eventual semi‐finalist Fitzroy‐Doncaster. During this period we made a strong case for playing finals and were even an outside chance of finishing top four. In round 13, we defended a deceptively competitive score of 139 against a previously undefeated St Kilda. Mark Nelson and Dean Wiener both made marvellous contributions with the bat while our bowling and fielding performance was exceptional. In 14 rounds, we were bowled out just once; an exceptional performance, which helped us to be seventh on the ladder.

The rain was clearly the biggest villain of the season. We were in strong positions to gain the six points against both Casey‐South Melbourne and Essendon but were denied after the both second days were washed out: Greg Connor's accomplished 110 underlined his classiness at this level. Over the first 14 rounds, the only game in which we lost all 10 wickets was on a wet wicket against Ringwood. Nonetheless, at one stage, we had the Rams 6/56 chasing our 124. Although we couldn’t close out the win, Graham Hole took a season‐best 6/21 from 16.2 overs.

Clearly, one of the major highlights was the injection of youth. 13‐year‐old Jacob Serry had an outstanding year, both as a wicketkeeper and batsman. He took five catches against Ringwood and opened the batting twice, yielding a 30 against Fitzroy‐Doncaster. Stefan Lidstrom, 14, also had a terrific start to his career. He demonstrated some outrageously good concentration for a player his age, and was involved in several big partnerships. His 29 in a 98‐run stand with Nick Morrey against North Melbourne was a clear highlight. Morrey himself had an extraordinary game against the Kangaroos: after compiling a patient 87 he proceeded to take 4/10 from the 13.3 miserly overs, which included an astounding 11 maidens! Will Long also provided arguably the highlight of the season with his fielding: a direct hit run out, from the long on boundary, turned the game against St Kilda on its head.

Several other youngsters showed some very promising signs. Jack Taylor made two fifties – including a 57 from 44 balls, with 5 sixes, against Carlton – and bowled with some sharp pace. Will Pike played an excellent game in round 1 making 57 at no. 3 and taking 1/5 from 5 overs. Vince Jarvis bowled tightly throughout the season; he never got the bag of wickets he deserved, but maintained a miserly economy rate of 3.36 across 15 games. Pete Cassidy also had a fantastic start to his Prahran career, not so much with the bat but with the ball; he took a vital 3/24 to help us defeat a top‐placed St Kilda. Adam Hutton bowled extremely well in his handful of 4th XI games, taking 3/12 against Essendon and 4/14 against Melbourne. Darcy O'Connor also showed plenty of guile with his leg spinners, taking 4/36 from 22.5 overs against University. And, of course, we can't forget Japanese recruit Yuki Yanagawa, who showed plenty of promise with his slow mediums.

Our final ladder position – 13th; with 5 wins, 3 draws and 8 losses – belied the quality of our performances. We lost two games, by three runs and two runs respectively, and were denied any points in games where we held the impetus due to the inclement weather. Unfortunately we were not able to sneak into the top eight. Inconsistency – both in performance and team structure – bad weather and bad luck all played a part. However, it was nonetheless an extremely enjoyable, if at times frustrating, season of 4th XI cricket.

INDEPENDENT AUDIT REPORT TO THE MEMBERS OF PRAHRAN CRICKET CLUB INCORPORATED

Scope

I have audited the financial statements of the Prahran Cricket Club Incorporated for the year ended 31 May 2011. The Club's Committee is responsible for the preparation and presentation of the financial statements and the information they contain. I have conducted an independent audit of these financial statements in order to express an opinion on them to the members.

The financial statements have been prepared for the purpose of fulfilling the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act (Vic). I disclaim any assumption of responsibility for any reliance on this report or the financial statements to which it relates to any person other than the members, or for any purpose other than that for which it was prepared.

My audit has been conducted in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards to provide reasonable assurance as to whether the accounts are free of material misstatement. My procedures included examination, on a test basis, of evidence supporting the amounts and other disclosures in the financial statements, and the evaluation of significant accounting estimates. These procedures have been undertaken to form an opinion as to whether, in all material respects, the financial statements are presented fairly in accordance with the accounting policies adopted by the Committee so as to present a view of the Club which is consistent with my understanding of its financial position and the results of its operations. These policies do not require the application of all Accounting Standards and other mandatory professional reporting requirements in Australia.

The audit opinion expressed in this report has been formed on the above basis.

Qualifications

As an audit procedure it was not practical to extend my examination of income received beyond the accounting for the amounts received and banked as shown by the books and records of the Club presented for audit. This situation is normal for entities of this type.

Additionally, in view of the size of the deficiency of net assets of the Club I am unable to conclude that the assets of the Club should be stated at cost in accordance with the going concern basis.

Qualified Audit Opinion

In my opinion, except for the effects on the financial statements of the matter referred to in the qualification paragraph, the financial statements present fairly in accordance with applicable Accounting Standards the financial position of the Prahran Cricket Club Incorporated as at 31 May 2011 and the results of its operations for the year then ended.

A TRUE BLUE FOR LIFE

It had been a good night, but it was 10.30pm and close to wrapping up. Prahran Cricket Club president Phil Williamson rose to announce there was one final presentation, and an important one: a life membership.

Former Australian player Julien Wiener listened intently. Wiener, 56 and captain of the Second XI, has an acute sense of Prahran's history, appreciating the towering contributions of life members such as Sam Loxton, Bob Parish, David Jukes, Dav Whatmore, David Mandie, Ian Crawford, John Raglus and John Malligan.

Williamson began with generalisations that gave no clue to the identity of the new life member. Then he got specific: this Prahran product had been one of the privileged few to go on to play for Australia. "The penny dropped," Wiener said. "He was talking about me."

He said his heart fell to the pit of his stomach, which fell to his feet. "We all have little episodes in our life when things are just a complete and utter surprise," he said. "This was total, fair dinkum shock. If you ask the guys around the club they'll probably say I can usually string a few words together when I have to. But I was a blubbering mess.

"The club has been a big part of my life for 40‐odd years ... To be recognised like that just blew me away."

Wiener says he'll be forever indebted to Prahran, as much for teaching him life lessons as helping him reach international cricket. It gave him "an amazing amount of opportunity".

Advice from 1948 Invincible Loxton still rings in his ears. It took in cricket and standards of behaviour, a sort of code of conduct well before it was enshrined by the ICC.

"I can't understate what that was worth," he said. "People like Sam Loxton, Bob Parish and David Mandie had a great and positive influence on my life. That's what I'm most proud of."

Wiener played junior cricket at Brighton Union and Brighton Grammar before joining Prahran. The club was experiencing lean times and had brought in Kevin Harwood from Melbourne Grammar as coach. Harwood would admit he was no great cricketer but he had the ability to make players strain and strive for their best. Soon the firsts were playing finals cricket.

Harwood told Wiener he needed to get fitter. The batsman responded by running to training from East Brighton. The route is etched in his mind: Hampton St to Nepean Highway and along Orrong Rd (these days Wiener stays fit by running messages for Ajax coach Bernie Sheehy in the VAFA).

Starting in the thirds, he quickly rose to the firsts and at 21 was selected to play for Victoria. In 1979/80, the season in which World Series players returned to the establishment fold, the right‐hand batsman played the first of his six Test matches, starting out against England in Perth with scores of 11 and 58 in a home‐team victory.

The Australian team included AR Border, GS Chappell, KJ Hughes, RW Marsh, DK Lillee and JR Thomson. Later that summer JM Wiener negotiated a new ball delivered at rocking speed by Andy Roberts and Michael Holding. Colin Croft and Joel Garner had second dibs. Touring Pakistan five weeks later, he played Tests at Faisalabad and Lahore, hitting 93 in the second match against an attack led by Imran Khan. Then he was dropped, never to return.

"I wasn't there for as long as I planned for, but, oh God, it was just fantastic," he said. "Nothing has changed. It's still the pinnacle of dreams for young cricketers, to represent their country."

Although he is widely known as a Prahran player, Wiener had stints at Ringwood, Hawthorn‐East Melbourne and Northcote. He left the True Blues before 1983/84 season, when they won the premiership on the back of a blazing Dav Whatmore century. Wiener compensated by taking Northcote to a flag in 1986/87, defeating Collingwood in a grand final remembered for the Mankad incident involving Ian Callen and David Emerson. Returning to Toorak Park, he played the last of his 102 First matches in 1994/95. Later came stints as Second XI captain, split by a spell as a Victorian selector.

Last season Wiener led the seconds to the grand final, making 17 not out from No 10. Where once he went out first, now he's happy to come in near‐last, the tale of age reflected in the tail of the batting card. His role is more about preparing players for the top team.

"It's great fun being out there with terrific young people and trying in some small way to help them be the best they can," he said. "It doesn't get much better than that."

Former president Crawford said the Seconds XI players were "in awe of Julien's ability to teach our great game and they hold him in the highest esteem".

He said it spoke volumes for Wiener that at 56 he continued to play and put back into a game in which he'd reached the apex. Although he didn't play all of his cricket at Prahran, Wiener said he'd never lost contact with the club and was always made to feel welcome. He started District cricket at Prahran and is happy he will finish it there. In the middle were days of baggy green caps and sharing grounds with the likes of Boycott, Richards and Miandad. But names such as Parish, Loxton, Mandie, Crawford, Raglus, Whatmore, Malligan and Jukes resonate as much.

"I'm now associated forever with those great people who have made the club what it is," he said.

"In the world of District cricket, and I'm going to say Victorian and Australian cricket, they are massive characters who gave up way, way more of their time than I ever did.

"To be bracketed with them, a group of givers, means so much. Just thinking about it now puts a shiver up my spine."
