    Practice Scenario

In 1958 Harry Harlow conducted an experiment on what factors affected the development of attachment in baby

rhesus monkeys to their mothers. He wanted to find out if food or comfort was more important in developing infant-

mother attachment. He used eight rhesus monkeys that were separated from their mothers at birth. He split the

    monkeys into two groups.

Group A were put in cages where there were two wire surrogate mothers. The surrogate mothers were roughly the

same size and shape as real monkey mothers. One of the surrogate mothers had cloth for comfort and the other

surrogate monkey was just wire. The cloth monkey also provided food from a feeding bottle.

Group B were also put in cages with two wire surrogate mothers. Again there was one cloth covered mother and one

wire mother. This time the feeding bottle was with the wire surrogate mother.

Harlow watched for how much contact time the baby monkeys spent with each of the surrogate mothers. Both

groups were isolated in their particular cage.

He found that the baby monkeys spent far more time with the cloth surrogate mother, regardless of whether it

    provided food or not.

(2 mark)14.Give two reasons why Harlow would use monkeys and not human infants? (2 mark)15.Name three ethics that Harlow would have to abide by in todays ethical standards. (3 mark)16. If, hypothetically, Harlow used humans. Name and describe two ethics he would have to abide by. Include at

what stage of experimentation he would have to adhere to these (before, during or after). (6 mark)17.For each of the following determine what contemporary perspective is involved:

    a. Brain scans of monkeys before and after being isolated.b. Comparing monkeys who were isolated from birth compared to monkeys that are bought up with

    their monkey mothers.

    c. Comparing male monkeys and female monkeys.d. Looking at how much time the monkeys spent with each surrogate mother and why. (4 mark)

18.Explain the difference between qualitative and quantitative data. Using the scenario, give an example ofeach. (4 mark)
