    XIIINTERCESSORY PRAYER

INTERCESSORY Prayer is a duty. Itspower is unlimited. Our Lord says, " Askand it shall be given you." " If ye shall askanything in My Name I will do it," whikSt. James writes " the effectual fervent prayerof a Righteous man availeth much" and St.Paul says "by prayer and supplication withthanksgiving let your requests be made knownunto God." Even the poet sings " more thingsare wrought by prayer than this world dreamsof."Prayer must be made in the Name of JesusChrist, and joined to His merits and media-tion, for " He ever liveth to make Intercessionfor us" If so made, and good for us and inaccordance with God's will it is sure to begranted. Prayer gains added force " whentwo or three are gathered together," or atleast praying the same petitions, and aboveall is it effective when made at the offering ofthe Holy Eucharist. We may pray in direct formal words or"by intention," that is, by saying the Lord]sPrayer, with the object in mind. Prayer isone of tke most important works of the Churchand those who cannot labour actively shouldspend all the more time in intercession.Prayer is best made to God direct, but theInvocation of the Saints or asking them topray for and with us is a very ancient prac-tice, based on the principle of both living and169

    XVIIAN AFTERWORD OF COUNSEL.

IT should ever be remembered that a right lifeand a right belief should go hand in hand.Neither one is acceptable to God without theother. " Faith without works is dead."Christian character shows in a holy life andthe members of the Church should by theirword and example show the sincerity of theirFaith and Worship and the power of Sacra-mental Grace in their lives. They shouldstand for high ideals in the Home, in Society,in Business and on the Stage. They shoulduphold the Sanctity of Marriage. They shouldnever countenance divorced persons who enterinto sinful union called " remarriage.'' Theyshould condemn drunkenness, gambling andimmorality, and keep themselves as "templesof the Holy Ghost." They should take adefinite stand against all manner of corruptionand wrong doing, and in every way put intopractice the Religion which they profess, cul-tivating " Holiness without which no man shallsee the Lord." They should stand firmly inthe Holy Catholic Church, ever having ananswer for the Religion which they hold andever being on their guard against the "dangerof drifting," realizing that the great weaponagainst "false doctrine, heresy and schism" is"earnestly to contend for the Faith which wasonce for all delivered to the Saints" and tokeep that Faith inviolate, in its integrity.
