PRACTICE 25-4 (p. 344)
Former college star Sheryl Swoopes
became the first player signed to a WNBA team.
Many people immediately saw the financial
possibilities of this new league, and corporations
paid to sponsor the new teams. Fans, especially
young girls, found many women to admire. Many
people bought tickets to the games, and they
came ready to cheer.
Unlike almost every other professional sport,
women’s professional basketball drew more
female than male fans. Many people appreciated
how the WNBA shook up the sports
establishment in this way. The players rose to
the challenges and fought hard to keep the
WNBA going. As a result, the league went from
either teams to sixteen, doubling in size in the
first five years of its experience. Some people
said that the WNBA would fail. However, the
athletes and fans knew how long women had
been waiting for this opportunity.

PRACTICE 25-8 (p. 347-8)
Although everyone complains about the
high cost of energy, people can do something
about their energy use. As the price of gasoline
rises, drivers will have to pay more to fill up
their vehicles. If car owners switched from gas-
guzzling SUVs to hybrid cars, they would save
money and do something good for the
environment. Heating oil can also be a major
expense during the winter.
Although no one can do anything about the weather,
homeowners could lower their heating bills if they kept
the thermostat turned down in the house. During the
energy crisis of the 1970s, people realized that they would
save energy this way. If every household took this step,
the United States would lower its need for foreign oil.
Even changing a light bulb can make a difference. A
person who replaces a single light bulb with an energy-
efficient bulb will not see a huge difference in the electric
bill, but if everyone made this change, the United States
would save a lot of electricity. In the past, people made
sacrifices to save energy, and Americans today can lower
their energy use, too.
