Dear Nursing Program Applicant,

The nursing faculty and I want to thank you for your interest in the nursing programs at Camden County College. We would like to extend a warm welcome to the Camden County College Practical Nursing (PN) certificate program and we are here to facilitate your learning experience.

The Camden County College Practical Nursing (PN) certificate program is approved by the New Jersey Board of Nursing. The PN program offers a challenging and comprehensive curriculum. Graduates from the program earn a certificate in Practical Nursing from Camden County College and are eligible to apply to take the NCLEX-PN examination and to apply for licensure through a State Board of Nursing. Camden County College nursing graduates are well received in the community and are employed at various health care facilities throughout South Jersey.

Please read the admissions booklet carefully and in its entirety, as it contains important information related to the application process for the PN program. The Camden County College website also contains information helpful to PN applicants as they navigate through the admissions process. Camden County College is not responsible for any applicant who does not follow the instructions printed in this Admissions packet. The applicant is solely responsible for completing the packet fully and correctly. Failure to fully complete the Admissions packet may result in an automatic rejection.

Applicants to the program must fulfill all listed admission criteria. Camden County College Practical Nursing admission is highly competitive. Applicants with the highest scores on the Camden County College Nursing program admissions assessment form will be admitted to the program. The Admissions rubric is based on a combination of TEAS tests scores and course grades. Please note that meeting all the admission criteria does not guarantee acceptance into the program.

Admission requirements for the program are subject to change each year. All applicants that apply to the PN program are required to meet all of the requirements of the application period for which they apply, including those who have previously applied to, or who are currently enrolled at Camden County College. Students will be notified by May 3 for admission into the Camden County PN program. Students will have a two-week time frame to accept their seat into the PN certificate program. Students will also be notified of a mandatory orientation date. Students who do not accept their seat within the two-week time frame or do not attend the mandatory orientation also risk losing their seat in the PN program.

Practical Nursing Applicants are advised that State Boards of Nursing regulate licensure for Practical Nurses. Requirements established by the Board of Nursing in the state where the person is seeking licensure must be met before the state will issue a license to practice all applicants must pass NCLEX-PN to be considered for licensure.

The New Jersey Board of Nursing Statute N.J.S.A. 45:11-27 states “An applicant for a license to practice practical nursing shall submit to the board evidence in such form as the board may prescribe that the applicant (1) has attained his or her eighteenth birthday; (2) is of good moral character, is not an habitual user of drugs and has never been convicted or has not pleaded nolo contendere, non vult contendere or non vult to an indictment, information or complaint alleging a violation of any Federal or State law relating to narcotic drugs; (3) has completed 2 years of high school or the equivalent thereof, as determined by the New Jersey State Department of Education; (4) has completed a course of study in a school of practical nursing approved by the board and holds a diploma therefrom, or holds a diploma from a school of practical nursing operated by a board of education in this State and is certified by the Department of Education as having completed the number of hours of instruction in the subjects in the curriculum prescribed by the board and an approved course of affiliation or has equivalent qualifications as determined by the board”.

CAMDEN COUNTY COLLEGE NURSING PN PROGRAM STANDARDS

HEALTH REQUIREMENTS

All applicants must:

• Be at least 18 years of age, high school graduate, and have a GPA of 2.5

• Attend a Mandatory Nursing Information Session. The schedule of dates,times and registration links can be found on the College webpage on the events calendar or on the CCC Practical Nursing webpage

• Complete the Accuplacer and test at college level

• Provide proof of high school graduation or GED.

• Provide college transcripts from all colleges attended

• A minimum score of 50% is required in both reading and math, and a total score of 55.0% for admission. Results must be less than 2 years old 30 days between attempts and limited to 3 retakes in one year.

• Maintain a grade of C or better and no less than 75% in all nursing courses.

• Maintain a grade of C or better in all courses in the nursing curriculum.

• Complete a physical exam, with proof of required immunizations “or titers that show immunity” proof of liability insurance, and health insurance. Applicants must provide a clear urine drug screen and clear criminal background, within two week of program acceptance.

• The above requirements are minimum and do not guarantee acceptance into the practical nursing program. Applicants must meet the nursing department’s criteria to receive provisional acceptance. The Deadline for completed applications are April 1.

• CompleteFAFSA if interested in financial aid (optional)

Students who are accepted into the nursing program will be required to complete a health history form. The form consists of medical clearance from a licensed health care provider. The clearance will attest that the provider is stating that the student may participate in all clinical activities without restriction. Activities include but are not limited to:

• Satisfactory cognitive and emotional functioning to ensure patient safety and exercise independent judgment and discretion in performing assigned responsibilities.

• Ability to stand for long periods of time and safely move immobile patients.

• Ability to bend, stoop and lift to deliver safe patient care.

• Sufficient bilateral finger movement to manipulate medical equipment.

• Ability to communicate effectively in a timely manner related to speaking, writing and reading.

• Sufficient hearing to communicate with patients, the healthcare team and to monitor medical equipment pertaining to patient care.

• Sufficient eyesight to observe patients in low lighting, read medical records, perform computer tasks and manipulate medical equipment.

PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Practical Nursing program at Camden County College is approved by the New Jersey Board of Nursing. This program provides the education that leads to a certificate in practical nursing and eligibility to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nursing (NCLEX-PN). The curriculum provides students with the knowledge, technical skills, interpersonal skills and values that qualify graduates for a career in practical nursing. Content include courses in science, social science, humanities, nursing theory, lab skills training and clinical experiences in a variety of healthcare settings. General education credits earned in this program will transfer as per existing intercollegiate agreements. The Practical Nursing program can be completed within 4 semesters.

The New Jersey Board of Nursing defines license practical nurse (LPN) as one who performs tasks and responsibilities within the framework of case finding; reinforcing the patient and family teaching program through health teaching, health counseling and provisions of supportive and restorative care, under the direction of a registered nurse or licensed or otherwise legally authorized physician or dentist

At the end of the program, the graduate will be able to:

1. Apply Maslow’s basic Hierarchy of Needs, Orem’s Universal Self-Care Requisites Theory, and the knowledge, skills and attitudes of QSEN as a framework for their contribution to patient- centered nursing care as assessed by skills demonstrations clinical and laboratory evaluation tools, course content examinations, and ATI proctored standardized content examinations.

2. Apply critical thinking and clinical judgment skills to the implementation of client/patient teaching and contribute to the development

of multidisciplinary care plans across the life span as assessed by clinical eval tool and ATI standardized content exams, course content exams and simulation activities.

3. Demonstrate Teamwork and collaboration within the healthcare team to support the provision of safe, competent, evidence-based practice as assessed by clinical eval tool clinical assignments, course exams and ATI standardized content exams.

4. Apply therapeutic communication techniques to facilitate effective communication with clients/patients, families, peers and other members of the health care team through verbal and written means as assessed by Clinical Evaluation tool and assignments and simulation activities.

5. Assist in the collection of data for the evaluation of the efficacy of nursing care based on established outcome criteria as assessed by clinical evaluation tool and assignments, ATI content exam items, and course exams.

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) care for the sick, injured, convalescent, and disabled under the direction of physicians, dentists, and registered nurses. They provide basic bedside care; take vital signs such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration. They also prepare and give medications, injections and enemas, monitor catheters, and provide wound care. LPNs monitor their patients and report adverse reactions to medications or treatments. They collect samples for testing; perform routine laboratory tests, feed patients, and record food and fluid intake and output. To help keep patients comfortable, LPNs assist with bathing, dressing, and personal hygiene. In states where the law allows, they may start intravenous fluids.

In addition to providing routine beside care, LPNs in nursing care facilities help to evaluate residents’ needs, assist in developing care plans, and supervise the care provided by nurses’ aides. LPN’s may also provide Nursing care in Doctor’s offices, clinics, and in private homes.

“Employment of licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses is projected to grow 12 percent from 2016 to 2026, faster than the average for all occupations. As the baby-boom population ages, the overall need for healthcare services is expected to increase. LPNs and LVNs will be needed in residential care facilities and in home health environments to care for older patients.”

Admission into the Camden County College LPN program occurs each spring semester. The admission deadline is April 1, 2021. All required documents MUST be received by the above dates or the application may not be considered for admission.

£ All admission documents must be submitted together via a large 10x13 envelope with student name, ID number to be considered for program admission. These must be submitted by the above dates to be considered. Students are strongly encouraged to reapply for the following semester if not accepted in the current admission cycle.

APPLICATIONS MUST BE TURNED IN BY ABOVE DATES.

PHASE II of the application will begin once an applicant is selected for the PN Program.

PHASE I: PRE-ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS (Note: Admission and program requirements are subject to change): Applicants seeking admission into the Practical Nursing program must complete the following steps by April 1, in order to be considered for acceptance.

£ Must be at least 18 years of age prior to the completion of the program.

£ Apply to Camden County College online at www.camdencc.edu.

£ Take the Accuplacer test and successfully complete all required remediation courses per Camden County College’s policy.

£ Complete a 500 word personal statement stating, “Why do you want to become a LPN and what would make you stand out from the rest?”

£ Schedule to take the TEAS test. All applicants must have a score of at least 50% in the Math and English sections with a total score of at least 55%. Also, results must be submitted OFFICIALLY see below for information on score submission. For more information about the TEAS V and scheduling please follow this link: http://camdencc.edu/testing/TEAStest.cfm and www.atitesting.com.

— A $101.00 fee will be charged to take the TEAS payable upon registration on the ATI TEAS website.

— Applicants are allowed three retakes of the TEAS within a 365 day period, as long as 30 days have lapsed from the previous attempt.

— If you take the TEAS at CCC you will be given an official transcript in a sealed envelope. Please include in your application packet

— If you take the TEAS at another college, go to the ATI testing website and request an “Official Transcript” sent to Camden County College Practical Nursing Program. ATI will charge a $27.00 transcript fee. We will not accept hand carried, scanned, or email transcripts.

— TEAS Scores are acceptable for two years from the date the test was taken.

Request official transcripts from all colleges attended to be sent to the Camden County College Office of Admissions, Records and Registration Services(address below) and include an additional official copy in your admission packet.

FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ONLY:

£ International students wishing to transfer credits earned in their home countries have the responsibility of having their high school and/ or college transcripts evaluated by an NACES or AACRAO- recognized evaluator of foreign credentials and submitted to the Office of Admissions, Records & Registration Services.

£ Completion of TOEFL-ibt (Test of English as a Foreign Language-internet based test) is also a requirement. A minimum required score is 75 total and at least 17 in each section.

— *The TOEFL may be waived if the student has earned a grade of B or better both in English Composition101andEnglish Composition 102from an U.S. accredited college (not a foreign affiliate).
