Some interesting statistics and facts

• The global self-paced e-learning market reached $32.1 billion inrevenue in 2010 (Ambient Insight, 2011).

• The global e-learning market revenue is expected to touch $107 billionby end of 2015 (McCue, 2014).

• It also means that the number of e-learning courses organizations needhave grown exponentially.

• Organizations want the courses developed in 6-8 weeks and are nolonger willing to wait for 3-4 months as earlier.

• Firms prefer a simple and effective design which is cost effective.• M-learning is a fast-growing trend that demands bite-sized modules.

Here are seven e-learning trends that are the talk of the L&D town.

7 Hot Trends That Rule Custom E-learning

Page 5/45

Page 6: Practical Guide on Custom E-learning | CommLab India

A: Standardization of Curriculum Development

Standardization means identifying elements such as the GUI, templates, interactions, and instructional strategy that will be reused across all courses in a curriculum.

7 Hot Trends That Rule Custom E-learning

But, why do you need to standardize development of e-learning curriculums?

Because EFFECTIVE STANDARDIZATION

• Enhances the quality of the e-learning material• Ensures consistency in the look and feel of modules and• presentation of content• Enables re-usability of the content• Helps cut development time and cost substantially• Reduces the number of errors considerably• Improves completion rates and “absorption” of learning

Page 6/45

Page 7: Practical Guide on Custom E-learning | CommLab India

B: Micro Learning

Micro-learning refers to the delivery of the training content in the form of information nuggets. The content is divided into several bite-sized, “independent” chunks, each having a span of not more than 10 minutes.

7 Hot Trends That Rule Custom E-learning

Page 7/45

Page 8: Practical Guide on Custom E-learning | CommLab India

Is ideally suited for our limited attention spans

Improves learner engagement in a big way

Facilitates easy digestion of learning content

Adapts to the modern-day learner

Interesting statistics which highlight the importance of micro learning

Learning in smaller chunks with a distributed bite-sized approach results in 17% greater transfer (Mind Gym, n.d.).

Micro learning results in greater understanding, application and retention than a day-long equivalent and results in savings of up to 30% (BBC, 2003).

94% said that e-learners prefer short modules (10 minutes or less) (Boyette, 2014).

C: Translation of Learning Content

Here are some statistics that reveal the importance of translating your content • English speakers constitute only 26% of the total number of internet

users. (Internet World Users by Language, 2015)• The translation industry is expected to grow by 42% between 2010 and

2020. (Bureau of labor statistics, 2014)

As the use of the internet by non-English speakers increases with each passing day, The demands for effective translation of online content are growing, and e-learning courses are no exception.

D: Gamification

Gamification refers to the application of game Mechanics and design techniques to engage and motivate people to achieve their goals. (Source: Gamification Wiki).

By 21 years of age, many males will have spent over 10,000 hours immersed in online gaming (McGonigal, 2010).

By 2015, more than 50% of organizations that manage innovation processes will gamify those processes (Gartner, 2011).

Companies are chanting the gamification mantra because it:

1. Increases learner engagement by making e-learning fun and interactive2. Facilitates better learning by fostering competitive spirit3. Creates a sense of accomplishment4. Improves knowledge absorption and retention5. Provides enhanced learning experience for people of all ages

On the flip side, developing learning games takes a lot of time and money. So, firms are creating gamified scenarios instead of creating “real” games. Here are the screenshots from some of our gamified courses.

1. By 2016, large companies will stream more than 16 hours of video per worker, per month (which is up from 10.8 hours in 2012 and 7.2 hours in 2010)(Gartner, 2014)

2. By 2016, 83% of organizations are predicted to use video as part of their digitallearning (E-learning Industry, 2015).

Videos are the preferred tools of training because they: • Improve engagement and retention• Provide opportunities to view complex or abstract concepts/places which might

not be possible in the learning environment• Appeal to learners of all ages and improve course completion rates

The tremendous growth in the number of “mobile internet” users is compelling companies to adopt m-learning methodologies.

The market for m-learning solutions will register a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.2% between 2012 and 2017 and reach $12.2 billion by the end of the five-year period (Ambient Insight, 2013).

Two major developments in technology are playing a major role in the delivery.

a. HTML5

b. Mobile apps

HTML5

HTML5 – a revolutionary paradigm that has created ripples in the e-learning

world. This innovation in the world of web technology is dramatically altering the

corporate training landscape. Let us see how.

An important statistic

By 2015, about 80% of people will be accessing the internet from mobile devices only, with the main focus on education. (Naidoo, 2015).

• Native apps: A native app is an app developed essentially for a particular

mobile platform and is installed directly on the device itself.

• Web apps: A web app is an internet-enabled application that can be accessed

through the mobile device’s web browser.

• Hybrid apps: These apps have the features of both native and web apps,

where static content will be in available in the app and dynamic content is

sourced from the internet.

18% of companies currently use Mobile Apps as one of their learning technology tools (Training Industry, 2014).

According to Bersin by Deloitte, you can save substantially by using the services of off-shore e-learning firms. A $10K – 50K content development project in the US may cost 20 – 40% less in India. In some cases, the cost savings can be much higher (Bersin, 2007).

What are the other benefits by outsourcing your e-learning projects?

Faster turnaround: When you outsource e-learning projects to the experts, you will be able to develop online training curriculums fast. This is because they have a dedicated team working only on your project full-time. Once you standardize the design, you will be able to develop a series of courses at a time.

High-quality deliverables: Good vendors of e-learning solutions will have set processes and competent teams who would conduct a learnability check before they finalize the e-learning project, and hence you would be assured of a good quality product.

Successive Approximation

Model(SAM): Helping Build

E-learning Courses Better3

Page 16/45

Page 17: Practical Guide on Custom E-learning | CommLab India

Companies have been using the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation,

and Evaluation (ADDIE) model for a long time to develop e-learning courses.

However, this model has some significant limitations. They are:

• The model is linear in nature, which makes it inflexible

• ADDIE is based on the premise that the requirements of the stakeholder are

completely known before developing the course, which is not always true.

• All stages of the ADDIE model are related to one another. Any change made at

one stage of the online course development can affect other phases, leading

to re-work.

• Most importantly, it is time-consuming

These limitations have resulted in the birth of a new, flexible approach for online

course development – Successive Approximation Model (SAM). Here are a few

advantages of this model.

• Iterative - takes small experimental steps that can easily be reversed or

modified several times.

• Collaborative - Coordinates expectations and roles when there are multiple

team members and stakeholders involved.

• Efficient and effective - Clarifies when and where to focus energy and

resources. Produces usable products as quickly as possible.

• Manageable - Facilitates completion of projects within time and budget.

SAM helps you understand the needs of your stakeholder well, and needless to

say, this enables you to deliver the best e-learning product. Let us now look at

the 3 phases of this model

Following this 3 step model helps you keep the stakeholders involved throughout

the development process, and it goes without saying that it results in an excellent

course.

How much time do you think it takes to develop an e-learning course of 1 hour?

Phase 2: 55 Man hours Phase3: 100 Man hours Phase 1: 68 Man hours

New-Age Strategies to

Deliver Top-Notch Training 4

Page 19/45

Page 20: Practical Guide on Custom E-learning | CommLab India

How can you deliver good training to your people? What does it take to equip your people with the needed knowledge and skills in a highly effective manner? Well, you need to make the best use of scenarios, videos and simulations.

A. Scenarios

Scenarios go a long way in helping employees apply their learning at the workplace. Scenarios help retain information in an easy manner. When you use real life scenarios, learners are able to relate them to an existing or familiar situation or fact. This helps build on their current knowledge, giving scope for knowledge transfer that has better chances of retention. Scenarios are very useful to impart effective training on regulatory affairs and products. For instance, employees of a stock broking firm can be coached to identify the possible causes of FINRA violations, using scenarios. Likewise, the features of a product can be explained in an interesting manner by creating a scenario in which a senior executive coaches a junior sales rep on the product’s features.

Top-Notch Training

Page 20/45

Page 21: Practical Guide on Custom E-learning | CommLab India

B. Videos and Job-Aids

Videos are ideal tools to impart highly engaging training on processes and products. For instance, you can educate customers on the use of a wash- ing machine using video. Similarly, videos can be Used to demonstrate a process of extinguishing a fire in a chemical plant. You can create ‘nano- videos’ which are very useful to deliver just-in- time-(JIT) support. For example, an automobile mechanic, while repairing an SUV, can instantly access a video on its fuel-injection system on his iPhone.

You can also use other digital media as job aids. For instance, a bite-sized module can be developed, which can be accessed on his iPad, to provide JIT support to a medical rep. Charts, comparison tables and geo-location based learning applications are also used extensively to provide information to staff when they need it.

C. Simulations

Interactive courses with simulations using the WATCH-TRY-DO (WTD) approach are ideal to train learners on the use of software and other products. .These simulations enable the learner to master the steps involved in the use of the product. In the first phase (WATCH), the steps involved in using the product are demonstrated to the learner. In the second phase (TRY), he is given a chance to try the steps he has watched. He is guided with pop ups and hints at every stage prompting him about the next step in the process. In the last phase (DO), the learner is all by himself and needs to apply the knowledge that he has acquired, remember the steps and do them on his own. If he gets stuck at any point, he is given the option to call for help.

Process to Produce an

Excellent Translation

of Your Online Course 6 Page 29/45

Page 30: Practical Guide on Custom E-learning | CommLab India

As globalization becomes the norm, many companies are expanding their operations into overseas markets. This has increased the significance of the need to translate different types of content, including online courses, into local languages.

Learners who do not speak English could benefit in a big way by translating your courses in English into their native languages. Various studies reveal that people learn better in their mother tongue as they can connect with the course effectively. Furthermore, learners find it easy to comprehend the subject matter, “follow” what is being shared and figure out new ideas and concepts as they are introduced, when training is imparted in their native languages. Therefore, translating your training content into regional language makes a lot of sense.

Here is the process you need to follow to produce high-quality translations of your e-learning courses.

Render the content into the desired language

Choose the right translator

This is arguably the most important step in the translation of your online course. You need to select a translator who is efficient, experienced and has translated courses for firms in your industry.

Prepare and send the “English” templates for translation

Once the English version of the course is developed, prepare a translation template which contains the text that needs to be translated and send it to the translator.

Utilize computer-aid tools to translate the content

Make sure that the translator uses computer-aided translation (CAT) software to render the content into the target language. CAT software have in-built memory tools which help ensure consistency in the translation and reduce cost.

6.Process to Produce an Excellent

Translation of Your Online Course

Page 30/45

Page 31: Practical Guide on Custom E-learning | CommLab India

Follow a well-set QA process to ensure quality

Have a robust quality process in place at each and every stage—one at the translator’s end where he or she can go through the file again and check for corrections, if any (self QA) and another at the lead translator’s end who reviews the work of the translator and suggest changes according to the subject.

Get the translated templates

It is time to get the translated templates from the translation agency. You need to make sure that you receive all files in proper formats.

Proofread the Content Get the content reviewed by client’s in-country reviewer

It is now time to get the translated content reviewed by the proofreader at the client’s end. The proofreader may accept the translated content or may suggest some changes. In case he suggests any changes, the changes will be implemented and the revised version of the translated content will be sent for his approval. This cycle would continue till the proofreader approves the translated content.

Send voice samples to the client to finalize the narrator

Once the content is finalized, we send samples of work of various audio narrators to the client. The client examines these samples and selects the person who would narrate the online course in the target language.

Schedule the recording of the audio narration

The next step is to prepare a schedule for recording the narration of the online course and finalize it.

Audio Recording and Development Prepare the audio script and send it for recording

We then prepare the audio script in the target language and send it to the narrator. The audio script needs to contain “pronunciation notes” to ensure narration of high quality.

6.Process to Produce an Excellent

Translation of Your Online Course

Page 31/45

Page 32: Practical Guide on Custom E-learning | CommLab India

Conduct a quality check of the recorded audio narration by internal linguist

Once the narration is recorded, it is time to check its quality. We use an internal linguist to ensure that the narration is error-free. Create the e-learning course

The next step is to integrate the audio with the content, synchronize it properly and develop the online course. Perform an internal review of the e-learning course for quality

Now, an internal team conducts a quality check on the developed course to ensure that it is devoid of errors.

Course Review and Final Delivery on LMS

Release the “alpha” version of the e-learning course for proofreader review

The translated course (alpha) is sent to the client and he will get it checked by a proofreader. The proofreader may ask for some changes to be made to the course.

Update the alpha version of the e-learning course as per feedback

After receiving the feedback from the proofreader, we make the changes as desired by him.

Release final version of the course for approval

Then, we send the course to the proofreader for his approval. He may approve the course or may suggest a few changes. In case of the latter, we incorporate them and send the revised course to him for approval. This cycle would continue till the course is approved.

Make the course LMS compliant

After getting the approval from the proofreader, we make the course compliant to SCORM or other desired e-learning standards and send it to the client for a technical review.

Upload the course on the LMS

Once the technical review is completed, the translated online course is uploaded on the LMS and learners can access it.

Understanding the

Cost of Outsourcing

E-learning Projects7

Page 34/45

Page 35: Practical Guide on Custom E-learning | CommLab India

Determining the cost of e-learning design and development can be tricky, especially when there are too many factors involved in it. When prospects ask us what would be the cost of e-learning, we ask them a question in return: Can you answer these questions for us so that we can give you a ballpark figure? Here is an attempt to give you hard numbers through these scenarios.

What is the performance goal?

If the goal is to inform, then the cost can be less when compared to the situation if the goal is to perform. For example, if you want the sales teams to learn about the new changes to the product, then a simple course will do. But if your goal is to educate your sales team about the product changes and how this is a competitive edge for you, the approach to design will be different.

What is the duration of the course? Is it one course or multiple modules?

The duration of a course will help you define the efforts involved, for example, if it is a 1 hour course, there will be roughly 45 screens with a final quiz. As it is a long course, you need to make it more engaging to retain learner attention. You need to come up with at least 8 highly interactive screens. But if we have 5 modules of 10 min with a final quiz, the effort is less than a 1-hour course. We design the learning strategy that is scalable throughout 5 modules and hence the cost will be reduced.

Product Training Manager: I have a new price increase course; I want all my sales people to get trained so that they can justify the price increase and sell better; also, this course has to be translated in more than 20 languages.

Assumptions: 15–20 min course, with audio and using Articulate Storyline

Budget: USD 40,000 for English plus translated into 20 languages.

7.Understanding the Cost of

Outsourcing E-learning Projects

Page 35/45

Page 36: Practical Guide on Custom E-learning | CommLab India

What would be the level of interactivity?

The level of interactivity plays a great role in deciding the time and cost of a course. If the course has a high level of user engagement and is a high-impact course for the learners, the cost would be higher.

High-impact learning is where we add gamification and scenario-based learning.

How quickly would you wish to rollout e-learning?

If we need to rollout e-learning quickly, there will be costs involved. A new product launch, a new software tutorial, a new regulation, a merger where a change management initiative is a must and you want all your employees to get trained quickly, there will be an increase in cost due to the quick roll out.

HRIS Manager: We need to develop 35 modules on various topics on the HRIS tool Workday.

Assumptions: Each module will be 3–5 min long, with screen simulation showing “How Tos” No audio, using Captivate 8.

Do you have an internal team to do the design and outsource only the

e-learning development?

Sometimes, organizations have internal SMEs and designers to develop the curriculum based on some set of standards; they wish to outsource only the course development part. This happens when there is a huge ongoing need to develop e-learning courses. Some examples of industries where an internal team that understands the business and standards can quickly design courses, while the development can be outsourced are the:

Insurance sector where new products and schemes are launched Computer industry where there are many product launches every year

This makes it very effective for such industries to design the courses in-house and give the development to e-learning vendors.

Hope these scenarios gave you some idea of the costs involved in developing an e-learning course.

Senior Manager Learning & Development: We are rolling out a new software tool for our project managers. The training should be ready at the time of tool launch.

Assumptions: Simple software tutorials without audio. 10 simulations on “Frequently Asked Questions”

Budget: USD 2000

Senior Instruction Designer: We have to develop 30 courses of 10 minutes each on Personal Insurance.

Assumption: Storyboards and all graphic assets will be provided.

Budgetary Cost: USD 22,500

How can you get the best of your e-learning budgets? Here are some tips in order to get the best return on your training investment.

1. Be clear with the outcome that you wish to accomplish with e-learning.2. Discuss various options with your e-learning vendor and finalize the duration

of the course, the tool to be used, and the strategies to be developed.3. It is always good to decide if you want to translate the courses so that you

create a plan for the design even when the English course is developed.4. Minimize audio for simple courses.

If your industry needs that you design courses in-house, have an e-learning vendor that can develop and deliver courses to you quickly.

Companies are increasingly standardizing their e-learning curriculums and delivering online training content in the form of information nuggets. The widespread use of the internet by non-English speakers is compelling firms to translate their e-learning materials in a big way. The use of gamification and videos is on the rise, while mobile apps are the order of the day.

Many companies are following the Successive Approximation Model (SAM) to develop high-quality online courses. They are using scenarios, videos, job-aids and simulations to deliver effective training. Tools such as Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate and Lectora Inspire are used widely to develop online courses.

A large number of organizations are outsourcing their e-learning projects to minimize costs and produce high quality output in quick time.
