A HAVEN FOR THE AILING
IN THE HIMALAYAS
Advaita Ashrama, Mayava, Uarakhand, was
started by Swami Vivekananda in 1899. It is a branch
of Ramakrishna Math, Belur, West Bengal. Thisashrama runs the Mayava Charitable Hospital which
was started in response to the pressing needs of the
neighbouring villages, where live some of the poorest
people of the country. Paents come here from dis-
tant places across hills and dales, somemes trudging a distance of nearly 50 km. Their helpless-
ness in sickness would touch any heart if only it were known. We run this 25 bed indoor hospital
with its outdoor paents department in this out-of-the-way place since 1903. All treatment is
done free of charges. In addion, qualied doctors from dierent cies conduct special medical
camps for dierent ailments like Surgical, Dental, Urological, Eye throughout the year to provide
special care to the poor villagers of the Kumaon region.
To accommodate these doctors we need to build a doctors’ quarters cum guest house. On
the ground oor will be the dining hall, pantry, recepon, and the caretaker’s room. On the rst
oor will be 8 rooms for the doctors. The second oor will have 6 rooms for guests and a medita-
on hall. The total cost of the building will come to around ` 60 lakhs. Please contribute liberally.
Donaons may be sent by Demand Dra or cheque in favour of ‘ Advaita Ashrama ’ to the address
given below. All donaons are exempt from income tax under secon 80 G of the Income tax
Act, 1961.

JNANA AND BHAKTI IN THE VEDIC AGE: October 1910
T he heart is the crowning glory o man. Man is man because he owns it, otherwise what dierence is there between him and an
animal. It is the lamp o Sattva that lights his mind and shows him the path to immortality. I there be anything in him, more than any other, to indicate his innate innite nature, it is the heart, and heart alone. Because it alone seems to partake o the quality o the absolute reedom o his nature, and will not be bound and thwarted by any law that this nite world can impose! Nay, it aspires to break down all the bars that nature hersel has orged or man, and soar alot,ree as reedom itsel! Thereore in it is the temple in
which the Innite Lord dwells eternally in man, and in it blossoms the sweetest fower that is ever accept- able to the Lord—Bhakti or devotion.
There is an eternal relation between man and man, and between man and God; and it is the heart which is attempting to assert the kinship, dulled though it might be by those extraneous infuences o the world that separate man rom his ellow-man and rom God. The result o such infuences becomes maniested as the Ahamkara or selshness in man. Thereore or
all purposes we can take this Egoism to be the causeo all this evil estrangement. But moments come intoour lives now and then when the veil o selshness
becomes thinned within us and the true colour o the heart asserts itsel in fashes o unselsh aection and real devotion towards man and God. …
An undeveloped mind loves to enjoy the physicalfush o beauty, its glamour appeals to his senses,while a developed mind with its long train o past experiences will set aside the claims o the surace-
charms o beauty and nd its satisaction only in the inner attributes o the mind. And a perect mindwill go beyond them even, nding them to be but imperect refections o the innite beauty o the
Soul, in whom alone is real and eternal bliss! Such a mind thereore will proclaim the goal o man to lie outside all attributes or gunas, in the Nirguna, the unconditioned—or their keen insight rends the veil o all name and orm, and kisses the eet o the ever-beautiul in the direct perception o the Mothero all beauty!
Such is the history o the evolution o the idealso man—rst Rupajamoha, or inordinate attraction
or what appears beautiul to the eyes, then the ap- preciation o the higher charm o the gunas or the internal qualities o the mind, and then the perceptiono the absolute unconditioned beauty, the Akhanda-
Ananda! And when a man has come to this stage, then alone is he able to love or love’s sake, or he sees the Beautiul equally in all, and thus becomes sama-darshi. Then, rom the highest God to the lowliestworm that crawls in the dust, he loves all, he eelsor all; he sees his ideal o beauty maniested in every
atom o the Creation! Then to him the whole uni- verse appears ull, intensely, absolutely ull, o the Beautiul, the Lord! He is the Bhakta, or the lover o God. His Bhakti or love maniests itsel rst in the concrete orms, gradually rises to abstractions, and then reaches nally to that unconditioned state where he sees the whole universe fooded with the light and the glory o the Lord. The whole world then appears to be but the living image o the Lord Himsel! Thusrom the beautiul Pratik0pasana, or the worship

o concrete objects that remind him o the Lord, the Bhakta proceeds to the glorious Vishvaruparchana,or the worship o the universe as the image o the
Lord; rom worship in little temples made o bricks and stones, he rises to worship the Lord in the stupen-
dous Cosmos; rom the worship o particular images,or symbols o God immanent in Creation, he learns
to bow down beore this Universal Image! These are the stages o the development o Bhakti
or devotion, mainly classied into the two divisionso the lower and the higher, the Apara and the Para.
Thus we see, the nal states o Jnana and Bhakti areone and the same. The dierence between them liesonly in the means adopted to reach that goal: The
Jnanin attempts to reach that state through reason or the intellect, while the Bhakta does the same through the culture o emotions or the heart. …
The man o Vairagyam being ree rom the trammels o selshness, views all as his own sel, i he is a ollower o the path o Jnanam, or looksupon all as the Lord’s own, as his nearest and dear- est in the Lord, i he is a ollower o the Bhakti path—or Vairagyam is the sine qua non o both Jnana Yoga and Bhakti Yoga. The path o pure Jnana

in India as Incarnations o God, have preached the religion o Love, sweet in unbounded devotion and tender resignation, which is easy o access to any de- votee aspiring sincerely and earnestly or it. ‘Sweet is the Beloved and blessed indeed is the Creation in
which He dwells everlastingly’—that seems to them to be its keynote. One gentle touch o the Lord, onesweet look rom him, is immortalising. This appar-
ent misery exists only to intensiy the happiness, tosweeten the devotion, to draw the soul nearer to the
Blessed Lord. And the advice given, thereore, when the heart
smarts under the deadly blows that ate ever inficts,when whole nature seems to sco at us without any mercy and the world appears like a dreadul cemetery
void o all that is loving and beautiul, is to seekshelter in the blessed eet o one or other o theseIncarnations o God who were intensely human and intensely divine—the glorious Sri Krishna o thePauranic age, the ever-loving Sri Chaitanya o a ew
centuries back, or last though not the least, the im- mortal Sri Ramakrishna, o our present day, whose kindly ace glowing with intense divine ervour andwhose cheering words alling like nectar rom the lips that cursed none, are sources o unending in-spiration to all who have seen Him, or have studied
His unique lie. But one might well ask the question—without dis-
paragement to these noble ideals o God-intoxicated men—Had India not the good ortune to enjoy, even as early as the age o the Vedas and the Upanishads, this ever-burning, maddening love or God and His Creation that we nd in the later prophets?
Expressions o such intense devotion are to beound even in the Rig-Veda. In the eyes o those
noble seers (Rishis) o old, the whole Creation was enveloped in a hallowed mystery o the immanent presence o the Lord. To them every part o it and indeed every object in it seemed bathed with His eter-
nal beauty and every soul appeared to live and move and have its being in and through His divine mercy! To their beatic vision, the air appeared as the benignfow o His divine grace, re as the symbol o His purity, space as that o His innitude, the Vedas as His breath, nay, the very atom carried to them the presence o the divine love!
We nd thereore in their living prayers an earnest beseeching or power to appreciate that love which maniested itsel in this wonderul Creation—or
what else could be the motive o the Deity to have projected this out o Himsel, to have become Manyout o the One? A mighty wave o love coming rom
the Deity Himsel had spread its charm over their hearts, and His loving presence was realised by theseers in every object o Creation—in the snow-capped

jalāśaya-jala-gata-pratibimbākāśayor-iva
vābhedaḥ ‘eṣa sarveśvara (eṣa sarvajñaeṣo’ntaryāmy-eṣa yoniḥ sarvasya prabhavāpyayau hi bhūtānām)’ ityādi śruteḥ.
As the ākāś enclosed by the orest is identical with the ākāś enclosed by the trees, or as theākāś reected in the water is the same as theākāś reected in the reservoir, similarly īśvr and prājñ associated with these (aggregate and individual ignorance) are identical.

ajñāna-tad-upahita-caitanyayor-ādhārabhūtaṁ yad-anupahitaṁcaitanyaṁ tat-turīyam-ity-ucyate
‘(śāntaṁ) śivam-advaitaṁ caturthaṁmanyate (sa ātmā sa vijñeyaḥ)’ ityādi-śruteḥ.
Like the unlimited ākāś which is the substratum o the ākāś enclosed by the orest and the trees, or o the ākāś which

miles, similarly ignorance, though limited by nature yet obstructing the intellect o theobserver, conceals, as it were, the Sel, which isunlimited and not subject to transmigration.Such is this power o concealment. It is thus
said: ‘As the sun appears covered by a cloud and bedimmed to a very ignorant personwhose vision is obscured by the cloud, so alsoTat which to the unenlightened appears tobe in bondage is my real nature—the Sel,eternal Knowledge’ (Htmlk , 10).

54. Vikṣepa-śaktis-tu yathā rajjvajñāna svāvṛta-rajjau sva-śaktyā
sarpādikam-udbhāvayaty-evam-ajñānam-api svāvṛtātmani sva-śakty-ākāśādi-prapañcam-udbhāvayati tādṛśaṁ
sāmarthyam. Tad-uktaṁ: ‘Vikṣepa-śaktir-liñgādi brahmāṇḍāntaṁ jagat sṛjet’ iti.
Just as ignorance regarding a rope, by itsinherent power, gives rise to the illusion o a
snake and the like in the rope covered by it, so also ignorance, by its own power, creates in theSel covered by it such phenomena as ākāś and the like. Such a power is called the power o projection. It is thus said: ‘Te power o
projection creates all om the subtle bodies tothe cosmos’ ( kyudh , 13).

On 24 August 2010 Srimat Swami AtmasthanandajiMaharaj, President, Ramakrishna Math and Rama-krishna Mission, laid at Belur Math the foundationstone or the proposed building to accommodatethe central oce or Swami Vivekananda’s 150thbirth anniversary celebrations.

On 21 July Ramakrishna Ashrama, Rajkot, or-ganized a half-day seminar for young entrepreneurs,technocrats, and aculty and nal year students o engineering and pharmacy colleges on ‘Channeliz-ing Youth Energy or Nation Building: A Viveka-nanda Perspective’. 607 delegates participated inthe event.
With the help o the Bangladesh Red CrescentSociety, the Ramakrishna Mission, Dhaka, organ-ized on 27 August a blood donation camp. In total51 persons donated blood.
Swami Prabhananda, General Secretary, Rama-krishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, inaugur-ated an additional staf quarters at RamakrishnaMission Students’ Home, Chennai, on 8 August,the birthday o Swami Ramakrishnananda.
