• ADVERTISING: Marketing media that is bought or paid for.
• PUBLIC RELATIONS: Marketing that is not purchased but earned through media coverage.

• Advertising and Public relations fall under this umbrella.
• Sweepstakes• Slogans• Packaging
Advertising Examples
• Commercials• Billboards• Magazine ads• Internet Banner ads• Paid Advertisements• Product placement in movies and TV
Public Relations Examples
• Radio Interviews• News paper or Magazine articles• Newscast reports• Celebrity recognition• Word of mouth• Social media mentions
Advertising
Pros• Company has more control
over the outcome.• Easier to predict timing and
placement of mention
Cons• Expensive to make• Costs money to research.• Often gets ignored or
looked over• Very few commercials are
well liked, most are ignored or forgotten quickly.
Public Relations
Pros• More believable because it
comes from an outside source from the company.
• It doesn’t cost money• Builds trust in the company
by validation from a known source.
Cons• Sometimes unpredictable• Could have less exposure
then advertisements• Social media can backfire or
turn if not monitored.
Conclusion
• PR and Advertising both have their merits under the Marketing umbrella.
• Both should be used to build a strong Marketing strategy.
• The use or overreliance on one method can create an unbalanced and ineffective campaign.
