A mouthpiece is a short length of a pipe which is two to three times it’s diameter in length fitted in a tank or vessel containing the fluid.

orifice as well as mouthpiece are used for measuring the rate of flow of fluid.

There are many types of mouthpieces, depending upon their size, shape or nature of discharge. The following are the important classification of the mouthpieces.

1. According to the position of the mouthpiece

(1) External mouthpiece (2) Internal mouthpiece

2. According to the shape of the mouthpiece

(1) Cylindrical mouthpiece (2) Convergent mouthpiece (3) Convergent – divergent

mouthpiece

3. According to the nature of mouthpiece (1) mouthpiece running full (2) mouthpiece running free

A mouthpiece is a short of a pipe which is two to three times its diameter in length. If this pipe is fitted externally to the orifice, the mouthpiece is called external cylindrical mouthpiece. It increases the discharge through an orifice.

Consider a tank having an external cylindrical mouthpiece. The jet of liquid entering the mouthpiece contracts to from a vena contracts at a section c-c.

Beyond this section the sect again expands and field the mouthpiece completely.

H = height of liquid above center of mouthpiece Vc = velocity of liquid at c-c section ac = area of flow at vena contracts V1 = velocity of liquid at outlet a1 = area of mouthpiece at outlet Cc = co efficient of contraction Cd= Cc * Cv
