Classical Approach:Concrete Containments
The simple concept is an up-scaled bucket with all its limitations which usually work great, until it starts raining.
Standard concrete bathtubs with oil water separators present many challenges.
Maintenance Heavy. Regular water sampling & testing required
Oil water separators are unreliable in the severe winter weather.
Products already available on the market are temporary fixes
The is a need for a more robust long term solution
Kinetrics had been working on an alternate solution to concrete for oil containment around transformers.
The standard concrete bathtubs with oil water separators that were being used for oil containment presented many challenges for the utility.
The bathtubs were found to be maintenance heavy and the oil water separators were unreliable in the severe winter weather.

New Solution?
Exclusive non-toxic, non-hazardous, and environmentally friendly highly reactive proprietary polymer blend encapsulates & traps hydrocarbons into a solid rubber-like mass on contact
Product :
reactive chemical load about 5 lb / sq yd
thickness about inch
Albarrie was approached by Kinectrics to create a better solution for a big project at a Major Nuclear Power Plant in Canada.
This venture led to the development of a unique geosynthetic which allows water to pass through but seals on contact with oil.
Offers 20-30% savings on upfront installation costs vs. concrete
Significant cost reductions achieved over its operating life. Requires no power supply or ongoing monitoring. Long virtually maintenance free life.
OIL MAT

Bottom Textile Layer
The Utility started to test lots of alternatives to try and capture oil but allow water to pass through.
They were using Peat moss, or Peatsorb which will work but not for more than a few hours
In 2004 Albarrie was approached by Kinectrics to create a better oil containment solution for a big project at a Major Nuclear Power Plant in Canada using fabric.
This venture led to the development of a unique geosynthetic which allows water to pass through but seals on contact with oil.
An so Sorbweb Plus was born. Albarrie holds the patent on the fabric and kinetrics holds the patent on the design.

Design
Typical 110% plus rain
IEEE guidelines for secondary oil containment
Best engineering practices
Site considerations
Oil type - FR3 or Biotemp require a different design
Client specifications
Information required:
Site plan drawing
Volume of oil
How many pieces of oil filled equipment
What type of oil
Soil permeability (geotechnical report is best)
Depth of the grounding grid
Geographic location
Deluge system, if any
Number of intrusions in the containment area
Transformer layout
Typically designed to contain 110% oil volume of the largest vessel plus 1/25 year, 24 hour rainfall event
Site plan drawing
Volume of oil

What type of oil
Soil permeability (geotechnical report is best)
Depth of the grounding grid
Geographic location
Deluge system, if any
Number of intrusions in the containment area
We can contain Natural Ester Oil- FR3 or Biotemp but we need to know what type of oil so we can change out the oil mat accordingly
Only oil we cannot contain is Silicon Oil

SorbWebPlus System
Station Cover Stone
Fire Quenching Stone functions by removing burning oil from the air and quenching the fire; limits and prevents fire spread
Woven used for lateral movement of liquid
Non-Woven separation & filtration layer
2 Sand Layer cooling & filtration layer
SAM unique geotextile loaded with a proprietary blend of polymer. Has a exceptional absorption capability per square inch. Extends service life of the containment by protecting the oilmat from small accidental leaks. Can be removed and replaced if required.
Oil Mat patented highly reactive geotextile layer and the last line of defence. Allows water to pass through but seals on contact with oil
2 Sand Layer provides level bedding
Native Soil
Depth Min. 18 (.45m) Max 47 (1.2m)
SorbWebPlus is a multilayer passive oil containment system that
incorporates various geosynthetics to contain hydrocarbons.
At the heart of the system is a geotextile, a Smart Fabric, which
consists of two proprietary geotextiles interlocked with a protective layer
of polymer to form a continuous mat.
The system allows water to move freely through its Smart Barrier without
accumulating. If hydrocarbons come in contact with the Smart Fabric
it will undergo a chemical reaction turning the fabric into a rubber seal
thereby preventing the hydrocarbons from escaping the containment area
SAM (Special Absorbing Material) capable of absorbing 1 gallon/ sq.ft or 40L/m2 depending on the amount of pressure these numbers will vary.

Sam is designed to absorb oil and Oilmat is designed to seal on contact with oil. Both geotextiles are used in a containment system to avoid premature sealing of a containment under chronic leaks or a small accidental spill thus extending the life of your secondary containment.
The disc of fabric in the video is the SAM geotextile under one drop per second of Hyvolt mineral oil over 6 hour period

Applications
Substation Transformers of all sizes, particularly large size equipment with the potential for considerable discharges.
Environmentally sensitive areas where an oil spill could cause significant damage.
Single or multiple above ground storage tanks.
Can be installed both in new substations or retrofitted into existing concrete containments eliminating standing water and the need for mechanical pumps.
The SorbWebPlus secondary containment system is extremely flexible and can be designed with a multitude of configurations, from standard earthen berm perimeters to concrete walls, fibreglass or carbon fiber walls, jersey barriers, underground or above ground. Bring us your challenge and we will work together to develop the right solution.

System Testing
Extensive lab testing
Performance testing in a test pit
Effectiveness of the system in the presence of an oil spill.
Independent lab analysis of test pit soil after spill Non detectable levels of hydrocarbons were reported.
Driveability capabilities
Oil burn testing
Performance under severe weather
High quality solution was needed to meet reliability expectations
During the various development stages different kinds of testing were conducted by not only the Utility, but also by Kinetrics and Albarrie
Ultimately the systems performance was tested and verified by a 3rd party environmental engineering firm. The product had to meet our customers high standards and performance demands to cement its reliability as a viable oil containment option.
