Occupational Health and Safety

The University Health and Safety Policy, states:

“The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) has a vital interest in the health and safety of its employees, students, visitors and contractors. The prevention of occupational illness or injury is a major continuing objective and UOIT will make every reasonable effort to provide and maintain a safe and healthy work and learning environment.”

Employer Responsibilities

• Establish and maintain an Internal Responsibility System (IRS) by ensuring all supervisors and workers know their responsibilities for health and safety

• Provide workplaces compliant with applicable Building and Fire Codes

• Create health and safety policies and procedures

• Ensure appropriate training is provided for workers to recognize hazards

Supervisor Responsibilities

A “supervisor” under the Act, means a person who has charge of a workplace or authority over a worker. In addition to their own worker responsibilities, a supervisor must:

• Ensure that a worker complies with the Act and regulations;

• Ensure that the equipment, protective device or clothing required is used or worn by the worker;

• Advise a worker of any potential or actual health or safety dangers known by the supervisor;

• Take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of the worker (includes ensuring training has been completed).

The OHSA gives every worker three important rights:

1. You have the Right To Know

2. You have the Right to Participate

3. You have the right to refuse unsafe work

Worker Responsibilities

• Comply with the Act, any applicable Regulations and the university health and safety rules;

• Use all machines and equipment the way you were trained to use them;

• Use any required personal protective equipment (such as goggles, gloves and safety glasses) the way you were trained. Don't modify them in any way;

• Report any hazards you see to your supervisor and/or anything you think may contravene the Act, its Regulations or university safety rules;

• Always work safely.

In all cases of injury or illness at the workplace

• Get first aid treatment right away

• Any work related accident, injury or illness must be reported to your supervisor

• Complete an Accident/Injury form

Early and Safe Return to Work

Goal: To minimize amount of time away from work by understanding and accommodating the medical condition

• Non work-related: ST leave provided

• Work-related: WSIB coverage (wages advanced)

• Work with physician to identify capabilities and accommodate worker with modified duties
