A long time ago, when the kingdom

of water was inhabited by mermaids,

there lived a king who had two princes:Tomis and Gibraltar. The king hated

mermaids and so he sent his sons with

two ships to look for them and kill

them. Just before they went their

separate ways, one towards east and

one towards west, they saw two

mermaids playing. Their names were

Neagra (negru in Romanian means

black) and Mediterranean.

The mermaids had already seen them,

and they had also seen the nets and theharpoons, so they decided to use their

powers to raise huge waves and disappear

in the depth of the waters.

When the mermaids returned to their

father, they told him what had happened and

he decided that in order to protect his

daughters the best thing to do was to leave

to other places.

Meanwhile, the princes continued their

journeys, Tomis going to the east and

Gibraltar to the west, looking for the

beautiful mermaids.

After a while, the mermaids father got

ill and he wanted to help them before he

died. Knowing that his daughters had fallen

in love with the two princes, he gave them

two magic shells in which they could see

their beloved. But first he warned them:

The love between mermaids and

humans brings only trouble. Your mother was

a human and she found her end being cursed

by her people. After saying that, the old

man closed his eyes and died.

After their father died, the mermaids

decided to find the princes they loved. They

used the magic shells which showed them that

Neagra should go east and Mediterranean

should go west.

When she arrived near Tomis ship,

Neagra got into his dreams through a spell and

Tomis fell in love with her.

Then, each night, they spent their timetogether, sharing stories about the deep world

of the seas and the humans world.

One day, during a big storm, Neagra

wanted to make sure Tomis was all right

and came too close to the ship. A sailor

saw her and threw a harpoon into her

heart. With her last powers Neagra startedto sing a song Tomis liked very much.

Hearing the song Tomis plunged into the

waves to help her but they both

disappeared into the dark waters. Since

then that sea was named Marea Neagra

(The Black Sea), after the mermaids name.

When storms start on the Black Sea,

sailors say that the prince is looking for his

beautiful mermaid, and when the sea is

calm they say the prince is listening to the

wonderful songs of the mermaid.

Gibraltar had the same fate: heended beside the beautiful

Mediterranean, crushed by the rocks of a

straight during a storm.
