Introduction• The beauty of differences in world cultures is that what is normal and commonplace for some will seem strange and different to others. • Here are some customs and traditions around the world that may appear especially bizarre to outsiders.
Polterabend• German pre-wedding
tradition• friends and family break
dishes, flowerpots, tiles, toilets, pretty much anything except glasses or mirrors.
• symbolize working together through future difficulties the bride and groom must clean everything up.
Monkey buffet festival
• held annually in Thailand to promote tourism• giving fruits and vegetables to the local
monkey population of 2,000 in Lopburi province north of Bangkok.
Gurning
• Gurn= distorted facial expression• English rural tradition since 1267• World Gurning Championship in Egremont,
held annually in England
Camel wrestling• Practised in Turkey• a popular event where two specially bred
male camels wrestle each other.
Blackening the bride
• Scottish pre-wedding ritual• Bride is covered with eggs, spoiled
milk, feathers, then paraded around town
• purpose :to prepare the bride for marriage because after going through that, any marital problems will seem like nothing.
Foot binding
• Practised in China by young Chinese girls- girls between the ages of three and fourteen had their feet broken and bound with bandages, in order to prevent their feet from growing “too big”

Finger Cutting
• Practised by the Dani tribe in Indonesia• When a family member dies, female
relatives must cut off a segment of one of their fingers.
• performed to satisfy ancestral ghosts.
Conclusion• Every ethnic around the globe has its own
unique tradition with their respective meanings affiliated to it
• No matter how weird the tradition appears to us, outsiders, we still have to respect its uniqueness
