4 Interestingly, friendships are complex social relationships that we experience in life. These relationships begin at a very young age, especially when we were enrolled in either nurseries or primary schools.

In the process of growing up, we make numerous friends. For instance, children develop friendships easily with their peers who may come from different ethnic and religious backgrounds. This is particularly true in Malaysia which consists of a multi-racial and multi-cultural population. Upon becoming teenagers, these children face greater challenges in building friendships. This is due to their ever-changing emotional needs and their immediate environmental influence.

As they grow up and mature, teenagers will look for long lasting relationships. Hence, the characteristics of friends that they look for in building their friendships are those who share similar interests with them and who would be with them through good and bad times. They would also try to make friends with those would share their success and failures. Maturity would also teach teenagers to discriminate between genuine friends and those who are there to take advantage of them. They would also learn to recognize the friends whom they can rely upon. Ultimately, their circle of friends becomes few and exclusive.

Clearly, teenagers would discover that developing friendships may be easy. However, they would also understand that recognizing who good friends really are may be difficult task in life.
