    The development of textile sector is closely linked withindustrial revolution. Garment industry took one morecentury to develop after the growth of textile industry.

    In Ethiopia there are:

    397 small size, 7 medium and 32 large garment industries.

    1,961, 343 and 7,442 employees respectively.

    Totally, the sector creates a job opportunity for 9,756employees.

    The workers in garment industry work in clothes designing,sewing or cutting services, and clothes wholesaling.

    The work environment in a majority of these units is unsafeand unhealthy Due to the nature of these jobs

    Musculoskeletal disorders are one of the leadingcauses of disability in industrialized societies.

    Sewing machine operators face a substantiallyhigher risk of muscle pain and injury than workersin other jobs

    The main goal of this paper is: The practical application of a methods for evaluating,

    and suggests possible solutions in working conditionsof Adama garment industry,

    Improve the working conditions in the garmentmanufacturing industry in Ethiopia through anergonomics evaluation.

    Adama Garment Industry

    Was established in 1987 and

    The company is under Metals and Engineering

    Corporation (METEC).

    The Garment Industry is located 105 km East from

    Addis Ababa, in the town of Adama. It has five factory facilities including:

    A heavy duty garment factory,

    A garment sewing factory, A parachute and drag chute factory,

    A shoes/gloves factory and

    A furniture cabinet factory

    The subjects were 80 in number (aged from 20-45

    years),

    With the mean age of 33years

    with about 32.5 % below 30 years,

    50% below 40 years, and

    They were experienced, with an average of 11.5

    years.

    In addition, working hours per week is 44.

    The walk-through research yielded the

    following interpretation Jobs were varied with respect to products,

    processes, and operations,

    Tasks were generally repetitive and burdensome

    to workers and they feel discomfort, Workspace was overcrowded,

    Sitting postures were typically constrained and

    uncomfortable.

    Time schedules were tight

    Required speeding up in performing tasks.

    Many seats were hard and wooden, without a to

    prevent tissue compression.

    Sharp bending of the neck was common,

    combined with sharp bending of the trunk among

    taller workers, or moderate bending, among

    shorter workers.

    Equipment, including sewing machines, was

    This study examined the ergonomic work conditions

    in one of the garment industry

    workplace and empirical measurements

    applicable to working conditions showed clear

    evidence of work practices,workplace conditions and equipment designs that

    were unfavorable to productivity, health and

    safety.

    The injurious effects included relatively high

    incidences of musculoskeletal problems

    yielded significant improvements in productivityand the effects on the workers over a relatively

    short period of time.

    are made of a textured, 100% nitrile rubbersurface for superior chemical and slip resistance

    ironing, inspection and cutting should bemade as possible to change,

    To fit well to the workers by adding

    adjustments so as to decrease suffering and illhealth among workers.

    The garment industry needs to continuously

    identify the problem and, more importantlyimplement solutions to reduce the risk of

    injuries in situations.
