• Still headquartered in Rutland Vermont to this day
• 2,500 employees serving over 200,000 commercial customers and 550,000 household
• Owner/Operator of Long Trail Compost Facility (Bennington VT) & Hawk Ridge Compost Facility (ME)
• Interest stake in Anaerobic Digestion Facilities in New England.
• Operator of the CSWD’s MRF for 24 years
• Vertically integrated collection, transfer, disposal, recycling, composting and anaerobic digestion operations
• Provide professional resource management services to over 10,000 business locations in over 45 states
• Recover over 800,000 tons of recycling and over 450,000 tons of organics for beneficial use each year

Background
With the onset of the Universal Recycling Law, Casella sought to plan, develop and deploy a depackaging facility that would meet Vermont’s sustainability goals.
• Environmental sustainability – reduced embedded carbon footprint resulting from:
• Proximity to transfer station and digester outlet by looking at the entire embedded carbon footprint of any of our tasks.
• Backhauling of gray water from the digester to mix with food waste to create slurry, reducing water consumption and hauling.
• Economic sustainability – to ensure long-term economic viability, the facility is designed to handle growing volumes as needed:
• Currently the building is 6,045 sf with the land area to expand as the market conditions allow.
• Thor T42 can handle up to 160 tons per 8 hour shift.

State of the Art Solutions
• Track record providing stating of the art environmental technology starting with the first recycling facility in Vermont in the late seventies.
• Proposed depack facility represents some of the latest innovations in recycling and sustainable recovery of packaged products.
• Materials will be separated mechanically to achieve legal compliance, reduce labor, and disposal costs at the landfill.
• Material is processed locally, not trucked to the landfill thus saving fuel.
• Packaging can be recycled, incoming food waste is graded for quality and either made into animal feed or feedstock for anerobic digestion, then returned to the land resulting in a closed loop process.
• After the initial operating trials we will evaluate the expansion options with third party partners, similar to standard practice at our recycling MRF’s and disposal facilities

Material Sustainability: Fostering Highest and Best Use of Processed Materials
• Flexibility to process material for a variety of end uses.• Examples –
• Dry material for composting, clean food for animal feed, special high BOD blend for anerobic digestion.
• By processing material in batches we can also better control recycling options for packaging.
• Basis for baler in the operation (see plan)

Liquid Slurry Management
Liquid slurry will be remediated by PurposeEnergy, Inc.
• PurposeEnergy has five food waste anaerobic digester facilities in the State of Vermont that are operating or under development
• Organic substrates are biologically converted to biogas and used to produce renewable electricity
• Electricity is delivered to the grid pursuant to net metering rules and Standard Offer contracts

Strategic Partnership Considerations
• Partnerships with customers, the State and CSWD are key to the success of this facility.
• Long term environmental sustainability relies on private investment in infrastructure such as this to achieve Universal Recycling Law goals.
• Economy of scale limitations resulting from low population in Vermont.
• Viability of existing infrastructure investment can and will be influenced by the addition of redundancy, as has been the case with some anaerobic digestion developments in the state to date.
• We will carefully evaluate and consider participating on any and all depackagingRFP/RFQ’s that may come out in the future.
