Why do we use Antonyms?

Using synonyms and antonyms correctly enhances writing and makes writing sound better.

Authors often use antonyms to show different sides of a situation or idea.

Synonyms and Antonyms spice up the language, and sometimes even provide a more detailed focus towards meaning.◦If everyone said "bad" all the time, the

world would be a boring place.

Think AloudLet’s say I’m writing a report about

James Forten. When I write about his experience on the prison ship, I think about how the experience must have changed him.

So I might write a sentence using two antonyms (opposite words) together: After he was released from the Jersey, James Forten was a young man who probably felt very old.

PracticeWorking with a partner, identify on a piece

of paper the antonym for each underlined word:

1. It was early morning in Philadelphia.2. It paid fairly well and the work was steady.3. Sail making was a profitable but difficult

job.4. The heavy thread had to be waxed.5. It was a dangerous encounter.6. The Jersey was dark and forbidding. Safe Unreliable Light Inviting Late Easy

PracticeWhen you’re finished, work with

your partner to write sentences using each of the underlined words and its antonym.◦Example: I get up early, but my

sister gets up late. You and your partner will share

out with the class one of your sentences.
