How well had the Native Americans adapted to life on the plains?

• Extract 1:• Native American hunting was adapted to life on

the plains. They hunted Buffalo for food. They used every part of the Buffalo. Almost every Native American tribe was involved in hunting; it brought all the Native American tribes together. Hunting required skill and bravery, although it was easier with horses, people still died on the hunt.

• Native American hunting was good, they killed Buffalo and used every little bit. They used the hide to make their Tipis and when they found the Buffalo they celebrated with dances.

the plains. They hunted Buffalo for food, because there was little else to eat. They depended on the Buffalo and made sure their lifestyle fitted around finding and killing Buffalo. They were careful never to hunt in bands to try and avoid killing all the Buffalo as they provided their supply of food. However, with the arrival of horses and guns the numbers of Buffalo killed became more difficult to manage.

• Conclusion:• Native Americans had adapted well to what

people called at this time the ‘Great American Desert’. They had even managed to make it like home. Many white farmers had suggested it would be impossible to live here, but by focusing their lives around the Buffalo the Native Americans made living on the plains possible…
