Paisley Pool Party More than 65,000 fans and approximately 7,000 boats turned out for the record-setting Aquapalooza 2010 on Lake Travis near Austin Saturday (7/10). rows,” Frey says. “Folks would anchor and could watch from their boats or take whatever flotation device was handy and swim out to the front of the stage for a better view. Lee Brice and Jerrod Niemann both put on great shows, and Brad was amazing. Naturally, ‘Water’ went over big. “Another nod to how well-organized the show was is that it ended at 7pm, giving plenty of daylight to the folks who had to paddle back to their boats, raise anchor and head back to dock.” Organizers say the 2010 event nearly doubled the attendance of last year’s Alan Jackson-headlined show.

NAB: Loosen Ownership Regs In a filing with the FCC, the NAB has again sounded the clarion call for “modest” reform of media ownership rules, including eliminating radio-television cross-ownership rules. NAB noted that local broadcasters’ more prominent competitors “enjoy dual revenue streams for both subscriber fees and ad revenues and are not subject to ownership restrictions,” which the trade group says “are not needed to ensure programming, viewpoint, source or outlet diversity in the 21st century media marketplace.”

Wayne Update: Get Off On The Pain With roughly 175 miles to go on his Meet Me Halfway walk, Jimmy Wayne is walking at least 18 miles every day to reach Phoenix by the end of the month. “I’m roughly the same distance as from Nashville to Memphis,” Wayne told us Friday (7/9). “I remember when I reached Memphis, [and] I couldn’t believe I

made it that far. Now that I’ve only got that far to go, it seems short to me in comparison to 1,700 miles.” Even though he has six blisters on his feet, Wayne says it’s worth it. “At this point in the walk, it hurts my feet to stand. Bring on the pain.” Follow Wayne here.

Clear Channel/Oklahoma City Dir./Programming Tom Travis discusses his most important songs, artists or concerts: 1. Ricky Skaggs/Highway 40 Blues: This was one of the first songs I played on the radio when I started in 1983. Every time I hear it, I go back to that 250-watt AM radio station in Benton, AR. 2. George Strait, Does Fort Worth Ever

Cross Your Mind: I was in Country radio, but that album and the songs were what got me hooked to the format. 3. Garth Brooks, Texas Stadium, Irving, TX, Oct. 1993: This was the biggest event when I was an MD. It made me feel like I had “made it.” 4. Van Halen, 5150: It didn’t matter if you liked Sammy Hagar or David Lee Roth, this album was legendary for Van Halen fans.5. U2, Dallas, Oct. 2005: That night I realized I had fallen in love with the perfect woman, who is now my wife! • A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Pink Floyd’s The Wall. • An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Anything by Bob Dylan. • An album you played or listened to incessantly: Rush’s Grace Under Pressure. I actually wore out the cassette and then bought two copies of the CD when it was released, just in case.• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Incubus’ Morning View.

PPM: Gender Divide (continued from page 1) Ladies First: KMPS/Seattle is the most female-leaning among the 35 stations, with women comprising 66% of its 25-54 audience. In mornings, that proportion jumps to 73%. And during the Holiday ‘09 period, the composition of adult women in morning drive was a whopping 85%. Seattle format leader KKWF has a 54-46% female favorability and KNBQ is 53-47% male, giving the Puget Sound three distinctive gender orientations. Right behind KMPS is WOGG/Pittsburgh at 65% female Monday-Sunday, though its nearly 100% simulcast sister stations lean male; it’s unclear why. Interestingly, also at 65% female are both Phoenix stations KNIX and KMLE, which skew even more female in mornings and to nearly the same degree at that time, too. Asked to comment, KNIX PD Mark Medina tells CA, “We have the same question: Where all my dudes at? One guess may be that both the Country stations here are programmed in a real CHR-style approach, and that tends to lean female, plus [morning personalities] Ben & Matt are big with the ladies.” Guys Like Us: WFUS/Tampa is the most male-leaning of all 35 stations studied, with men comprising 61% of its 25-54 audience. Next up at 58% is KBWF/San Francisco, whose listenership has been gradually becoming increasingly male since January; in May, it was a whopping 77% male among its 25-54s and 84% in mornings. Third-highest among men at 54% is KSD/St. Louis, which leans considerably more male than crosstown WIL (55% female). Head-To-Head: Just as in Phoenix, there are other markets where the two leading Country stations also lean female by nearly identical margins, such as San Diego, Dallas and Houston. However, there are larger differences between competitors in Atlanta, Denver, Portland, St. Louis and, most

particularly, in Tampa, where WFUS is far more male than WYQK-FM, the only station overall with an even 50/50 demo split. What can we conclude from these statistics? First, at least for now, PPM is showing the larger-market stations are leaning more female than Country stations do overall. Second, morning drive generally is shifting an additional audience weight towards women. Third, you can expect to find Country stations skewing substantially differently in their gender appeal in any given market over a short period of time. Any experienced PD knows that a big gain in cume among women, coupled with a large drop in “average time exposed” (aka TSL) among men, can result in a quantum shift in audience composition. But what causes those large cume and ATE differences is up

for debate. It could be the result of music decisions, personality appeal, promotions, marketing and competitive conditions. In Denver, where KWOF has leaned 59% female over the past year, PD/morning host Jonathan Wilde reports, “We don’t target women, per se. Guys are just as important, and we feel they will come to the party soon. The Wolf doesn’t sound like a chick station. Our January [25-54] numbers [73% female overall and 83% in mornings] were probably a bit out of whack as we were in transition to a new morning show with just me ... and I’m a female magnet as is!” At crosstown leader KYGO, which has averaged 53% female since last July, PD Joel Burke attributes matters to something more naturally occurring, noting, “We have and still focus on women, yet try to have enough attitude for men to feel welcome to the KYGO party. Other than that, I don’t believe there is any real cause-and-effect. It’s just the reality of listener behavior patterns and PPM panel turnover.”
