Wedding season is
upon us, hope you’ve
been hitting the gym,
getting enough rest
and eating correctly
Like athletes who
prepare for the big
game or tournament,
physical and mental
preparation is most
important, second
only to your photo gear and equipment. Many of you will
be putting in those long hours after each event doing the
dreaded “post processing”.
I’ve been listening to an audio book called “The Energy
Explosion” by Robin Sharma. He gives a few tips to keep you
energized during the day and weeks to follow. I will be trying
a couple of his suggestions:
1. Getting up at 5am and
2. Giving one day of the week to yourself. Let me expand
on this.
Getting up at 5am each day. This hour gives you the
time to prepare for the day by allowing yourself in this quiet
hour to center and calm your mind to approach the coming
tasks in a thoughtful manner.
Give one day to yourself. You may feel guilty about this,
since you could be doing your work instead. His reasoning
is that you will be more productive, by giving yourself time to
enjoy what you love to do, be it a personal project or other
fulfilling pursuit. Do these and it will increase your energy
and motivation.
Hope that you have a plan to keep motivated and
energized in your business of photography. Connect with
other PPGBA members at the monthly meetings and share
your common experiences and perhaps find other ways of
getting through this busy season.

His work has earned him many awards and honors, including “Album Designer of the year – 2010 & 2012,” “Wedding Photographer of the Year – 2012 & 2013” and “Image of the Year – 2013“.

Mischa learned, at a very young age, how to see life through the eyes of a camera. Graduating from U.C.S.C. with a B.A. in Fine Art/Photography, Mischa began working as a professional photographer using film and printing in a darkroom in Santa Cruz. Making the move to San Francisco in 2003, he established the independent studio known today as Mischa Photography quickly transitioning to digital and growing every year.Mischa’s genuine wide smile and signature laugh help to create a joyous mood and ensures a comfortable relationship between himself and his clients. Mischa’s natural interests in technology and fine art have kept him on the cutting edge of what wedding and portrait photography can be. Whether shooting candid photojournalistic moments or creating a dramatic showstopper, Mischa is at the top of his field.

Members can submit up to 3 digital submissions per member, per month (with a maximum of 40 total entries per month with members 3rd submissions dropped if over 40)!! There will be a nominal fee of $5 to enter the print competition for each digital entry. Board ReportThe April 17 PPGBA board meeting was held at the
Best Western Plus Grosvenor Hotel in South San
Francisco.
A motion was made and passed to split a CD that is
maturing in May: $5,000 into a new 12-month CD,
and $5,000 into our checking account.
A field trip for July is being explored.
A motion was made and passed that if a member
brings in a guest in May or June who is a potential
member, they will receive a raffle ticket for a
drawing for a Bay Lab gift certificate. If that person
joins, the member gets raffle ticket for ½ off of an
upcoming seminar.
Denny Weigand was appointed to fill a board vacancy.
He will also serve as the Membership Chair.
CPP Amnesty Program
The Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) program was recently given a massive makeover. The new CPP-only website (http://www.ppa.com/cpp/?navItemNumber=4314) provides CPPs with more resources than ever, including a Certification See the Difference video, (http://www.ppa.com/cpp/content.cfm?ItemNumber=4385) a CPP-only marketing toolkit and more.For members who once held the prestigious CPP designation, PPA members have the opportunity to reinstate their CPP, totally free. All one has to do is maintain PPA membership. In three years, they’ll have the opportunity to recertify and con-tinue on as a CPP for years to come.Here’s the fine print: THE DEADLINE IS SEPTEMBER 5, 2014 to opt-in to the CPP Amnesty Program. One may opt-in by completing the Certification Amnesty Form found at www.ppa.com/amnesty. Once the form is submitted, PPA Certifica-tion staff will update your status to reflect a reacquired des-ignation as a CPP. A CPP packet will be sent in the mail with a new CPP Certificate and CPP marketing materials to help display and market the CPP designation. ABOUT THE SEMINARThis class will provide you with the essential elements
of storytelling in a way that makes the art form accessible to all photographers, regardless of your specialty. Storytelling is an amazing way to connect to your clients, share your personal story, or live in a world that is distinctly different from our own. Whatever the reason, understanding how to tell a story can put you further in touch with your art. Yet at the same time we are visual people, and so we need a way to bring those stories to life.
This class will be a fun and inspiring mix of lecture, demonstration, and hands-on. Attendees will have a chance to step in and really get involved in the process. Brooke will also share her insights about art vs. photography and cultivating your personal style.
Set design techniques are invaluable to help create a niche for yourself that will differentiate your from your competition and add or enhance this valuable benefit for your clients. Using a blank space and simple lighting, Brooke will show how to design a
set to match your vision with inexpensive props and a lot of drama. Students will break out into groups to work hands on to create an amazing set and then photograph it with models.
Following the set design process, Brooke will also cover some image compositing and post-process techniques. You will be inspired to put your own, revitalized creative stamp on your work.

visiting PPGBA again after her very successful presentations for us in 2012.
Brooke grew up in Lancaster PA always wanting to tell stories. From writing to filmmaking to photography, there has always been a visual influence in the way she created art. It wasn’t until her graduation from Temple University that she moved into photography, combining her love
for writing with her love for cinema to create images that seemed more like stills from movies than real-life captures. The idea of the in-between has always been a fascination, combining opposite elements like life and death against one another to create unforgettable characters. State CompetitionsCompetition critiques at this level are often held live, providing insight into improving your work. District CompetitionsThis is your last chance to gather critiques and advice before the International Photographic Competition (IPC). (You’ll want those critiques and advice. Even if getting your work critiqued scares you, the new perspectives are oh so worth it.) PPA members are assigned a district based on where they live (Southwest, Northcentral, Western, Northeast, Southeast and Asia Pacific). Wow them here and you could earn a Seal of Approval. That’s a big deal. PPA's International Photographic Competition (IPC*)And now things are rollin’—you’ve got game, playa! You’re competing with PPA members from across the globe now and this ain’t a competition playground: this level of competition (the IPC) actually involves two judgings. The first one determines if your images are merit-worthy (yeah, that’s industry-speak to say you made the first cut). If they are, you earn a second judging, which could possibly earn you an additional merit and a spot in the Loan Collection (our way of saying that your work is the “best of the best”). Images that earn a Seal of Approval at the district level are also considered for the Loan Collection, and are published in the annual Loan Collection book AND exhibited at Imaging USA. Participating in the IPC can help you earn your PPA degree: earn enough merits and you’ll earn a Master of Photography degree in no time. Photo School Needs HelpPhotographer Brooke Shaden (PPGBA 2012
seminar speaker, and she’ll be back with us this fall!) is doing a big fundraiser to raise money for a photo school in India for survivors of human trafficking.
Brooke tells us:Last year I traveled to Kolkata, India with an
organization called Blossomy that hosts workshops for survivors of human trafficking. I went on a whim, never having been before and new to the cause, with the hope that I would be able to help in some way, big or small. I went home feeling as though I had been changed forever, and wanted to do more.
I was teaching photography to survivors of human trafficking. While I taught the camera basics, we also focused on self-portraiture and the lasting impact of finding self-confidence and understanding that everyone has a story to tell. Something was missing from my experience, and that was a lasting impact that would be able to ripple through more than a small group of women.
With the help of Blossomy and photographer Dave Junion, we want to bring a school of photography to Kolkata, India in which the individuals going through those shelter homes have access to free education in exchange for a certificate in photography as well as the opportunity for a future in a career that can provide confidence and hope.
The school that we propose would be self-sustaining after two years. The way that it works is simple: the school is attached to a fully functioning studio in which the clients that pay for portraits sessions have their money go straight back into the school system, thus providing income for those working in the school as well as those working in the studio.
If a student takes the 5-month course twice, they become eligible to enlist as educators in the school. At that point, they also have the option of working in the studio as a main photographer, retoucher, or manger. Therefore, those were were once students in the school can then filter back through the system to work as a teacher or photographer to help keep the school running.
We are looking for $25,000 to get the school up and running. After two years we do hope for the school to be creating enough income to pay those running it as well as keep it going for years to come, but in the meantime, we need to get things going. This money will go towards rent, educational tools like desks, cameras, laptops, and other necessities, travel expenses, educator payment, and so much more.
I believe that if everyone donated just a single dollar, we could raise enough money to get this school off the ground...and think of how many lives could be changed, or saved, because of it. I am so incredibly passionate about this project and I thank you for taking the time to consider it. I am grateful for you.

Certification helps to show potential clients the value in
hiring a true professional. Consumers might not know
much about professional photography, but they understand
that certification means professional-quality goods and
services. Anyone can buy a camera and take some
pictures, but a Certified Professional Photographer (CPP)
designation shows clients that you are a true professional
in your field.

Steps to become certified the first time:
1. Declare your candidacy. To do this, simply fill out
the candidacy form. In this step, you will also need to
pay the application $200 fee. Please note that your
candidacy won’t be officially declared until your payment
is processed. Once confirmed, your candidacy will be
valid for two years.
2. Prepare for the exam. PPA has many resources
provided to help you prepare for your CPP exam.
Take advantage of all these by visiting the CPP Exam
Resources section of the PPA website. We suggest
first downloading the CPP Test Specifications so
you know what the exam covers. Then you can test
your knowledge with the CPP Keywords, browse the
suggested reading material, review the CPP Flashcards
and take a Sample CPP Exam. You can also sign up
for a CPP Prep Class that will definitely boost your
confidence on the big day!
3. Take the exam. Once you feel confident you are ready
to take the exam simply go online and register for an
exam in your area. Remember you must register for the
exam at least five business days prior to the exam date.
Picture Identification will be required upon arrival at the
testing site.
4. The Image Submission follows the exam. You will
receive a set of instructions to follow in order to submit
your images. You can submit your images for review
up to three times without incurring any extra charges.
Should you not pass the image submission within the
first three tryout rounds, you’ll simply have to reapply
for candidacy, with a reduced cost of $100 to reapply,
earning you three more rounds of image submissions
and an additional year to do so.
5. Celebrate. Once you get your certification, give yourself
a break and celebrate! You’ll deserve it.
CPP Exams are scheduled throughout the year at local CPP Liaison
studios.
The next Bay Area CPP Exam will be held on on Jul 26, 2014 at 2:00 pm in Clayton, CA.

that certification means professional-quality goods and
services. Anyone can buy a camera and take some
pictures, but a Certified Professional Photographer (CPP)
designation shows clients that you are a true professional
in your field.

Steps to become certified the first time:
1. Declare your candidacy. To do this, simply fill out
the candidacy form. In this step, you will also need to
pay the application $200 fee. Please note that your
candidacy won’t be officially declared until your payment
is processed. Once confirmed, your candidacy will be
valid for two years.
2. Prepare for the exam. PPA has many resources
provided to help you prepare for your CPP exam.
Take advantage of all these by visiting the CPP Exam
Resources section of the PPA website. We suggest
first downloading the CPP Test Specifications so
you know what the exam covers. Then you can test
your knowledge with the CPP Keywords, browse the
suggested reading material, review the CPP Flashcards
and take a Sample CPP Exam. You can also sign up
for a CPP Prep Class that will definitely boost your
confidence on the big day!
3. Take the exam. Once you feel confident you are ready
to take the exam simply go online and register for an
exam in your area. Remember you must register for the
exam at least five business days prior to the exam date.
Picture Identification will be required upon arrival at the
testing site.
4. The Image Submission follows the exam. You will
receive a set of instructions to follow in order to submit
your images. You can submit your images for review
up to three times without incurring any extra charges.
Should you not pass the image submission within the
first three tryout rounds, you’ll simply have to reapply
for candidacy, with a reduced cost of $100 to reapply,
earning you three more rounds of image submissions
and an additional year to do so.
5. Celebrate. Once you get your certification, give yourself
a break and celebrate! You’ll deserve it.
CPP Exams are scheduled throughout the year at local CPP Liaison
studios.
