4F Sunday, January 17, 2010 The Daytona Beach News-Journal MY WEEK: AWARDS SEASON MY CHOICES FOR Anybody can pick the Oscars but it takes a real man (or newspaper) to try to prognosticate the very unpredictable Golden Globes. Voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press, the Globes celebrate the year’s achievements in TV and film and have been a very good precursor to who wins the Oscar in March. The Golden Globes, hosted by Brit comic and creator of ‘‘The Office,’’ Ricky Gervais, airs at 8 tonight on NBC, Channel 2. [email protected] Tom Iacuzio FANBOY HBO Best Performance by an Actress In a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini- Series Or Motion Picture Made For Television Jane Adams — ‘‘Hung’’ Rose Byrne — ‘‘Damages’’ Jane Lynch — ‘‘Glee’’ Janet McTeer — ‘‘Into the Storm’’ Chloe Sevigny — ‘‘Big Love’’ Who Will Win: Remember how I said that the Globes were unpredictable? I meant every category but this one. Anyone who has seen Fox’s ‘‘Glee’’ knows there is no way that Jane Lynch’s wisecracking Sue Sylvester won’t win. Best Performance by an Actor In a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini- Series Or Motion Picture Made For Television Michael Emerson — ‘‘Lost’’ Neil Patrick Harris — ‘‘How I Met Your Mother’’ William Hurt — ‘‘Damages’’ John Lithgow — ‘‘Dexter’’ Jeremy Piven — ‘‘Entourage’’ Who Will Win: No one came close to John Lithgow as the uber-creep Trinity Killer on Showtime’s ‘‘Dexter.’’ Lithgow helped make this past season the best yet for the serial killer drama. Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Comedy or Musical Toni Collette — ‘‘United States of Tara’’ Courteney Cox — ‘‘Cougar Town’’ Edie Falco — ‘‘Nurse Jackie’’ Tina Fey — ‘‘30 Rock’’ Lea Michele — ‘‘Glee’’ Who Will Win: To steal from ‘‘The Brady Bunch,’’ ‘‘Tina! Tina! Tina!’’ The new rule around awards shows is to never bet against ‘‘30 Rock.’’ We won’t. Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series — Comedy or Musical Alec Baldwin — ‘‘30 Rock’’ Steve Carell — ‘‘The Office’’ David Duchovny — ‘‘Californication’’ Thomas Jane — ‘‘Hung’’ Matthew Morrison — ‘‘Glee’’ Who Will Win: Alec Baldwin. See above ‘‘30 Rock’’ rule. Best Television Series — Comedy Or Musical ‘‘30 Rock’’ ‘‘Entourage’’ ‘‘Glee’’ ‘‘Modern Family’’ ‘‘The Office’’ Who Will Win: Ditto. Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Drama Glenn Close — ‘‘Damages’’ January Jones — ‘‘Mad Men’’ Julianna Margulies — ‘‘The Good Wife’’ Anna Paquin — ‘‘True Blood’’ Kyra Sedgwick — ‘‘The Closer’’ Who Will Win: As much as I would love to see the award go to Paquin, it will most likely go to either Close or Sedgwick pending a backstage coin flip. Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series — Drama Simon Baker — ‘‘The Mentalist’’ Michael C. Hall — ‘‘Dexter’’ Jon Hamm — ‘‘Mad Men’’ Hugh Laurie — ‘‘House M.D.’’ Bill Paxton — ‘‘Big Love’’ Who Will Win: I think it’s going to be a big year for Hugh Laurie and the cast of the Fox medical drama, ‘‘House.’’ Best Television Series — Drama ‘‘Big Love’’ ‘‘Dexter’’ ‘‘House M.D.’’ ‘‘Mad Men’’ ‘‘True Blood’’ Who Will Win: Most people will tell you ‘‘Mad Men’’ continues its award season domination. I’m going upset. No one had a better season than that of HBO’s ‘‘Big Love.’’ Fox ‘‘House’’ star Hugh Laurie, above, should win Best Performance by an Actor in a Tele- vision Series — Dra- ma. It would be great (but unlikely) if Anna Paquin, right with ‘‘True Blood’’ co-star Stephen Moyer, won Best Performance by an Actress in a Tele- vision Series — Dra- ma. Last year, Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey won Golden Globe awards for best actor and actress in a television series — comedy or musical. Get ready for them to repeat this year and for ‘‘30 Rock’’ to again win as Best Television Series — Comedy or Musical.
