Weight• Steel pipe (#/ft) is approximately 3.5 times greater than PP-RCT pipe.• Large and complex PP-RCT welding can be done in the shop to
minimize field welds, and still be manageable to handle.• Less weight equates to more economical shipping and handling costs.• PP-RCT is less labor intensive to install, thus it is safer and less
expensive to install (less equipment and manpower required).• PP-RCT reduces the need for heavy duty hangers and supports.
Joining• Steel pipes require a welding rod and open flame/spark to create the
weld.• PP-RCT welds require no welding rod – the welds are homogeneous.• There are no “heat affected zones” in thermoplastic fusion.• PP-RCT welds require no special post-treatment such as passivation.• PP-RCT butt and socket fusion welds are as strong or stronger than the
pipe.• PP-RCT welds require less labor to produce a proper weld. • Asahitec™ fusion welding training provided by authorized personnel,
onsite, or in a classroom setting.• Fusion welding generates no weld slag or noxious fumes.
Flow Rates and Head Loss• The H-W flow factor for PP-RCT pipes is 60% higher than that of steel.• On average, the head loss for PP-RCT pipes is ~ 38% percent less than
with steel pipe for similar flow rates.• In comparison to metallic pipes, PP-RCT may allow for either lower pump
operating pressures, or higher flow rates within the same size pipe range (See Table 1 on page 4).
• PP-RCT Pipes of a smaller diameter than steel may be able to be used due to their increased flow capacity, thus saving material, labor and installation costs.
Corrosion• PP-RCT pipes for water applications do not corrode – steel pipes do.• Corroding metalic pipes can introduce particles into the water system thus
adversely effecting other system components such as pumps, valves, faucets and radiators.
• Corrosion of metalic pipes creates higher operating energy costs over time and reduces the life expectancy of the system.
• Corrosion of metalic pipes can adversely affect the taste and quality of the water and increase health concerns.

Both Climatec™ and Watertec™ pipes are manufactured with patented Fibercore™ technology. Fibercore™ PP-RCT pipes consist of three co-extruded layers that make one homogenous pipe. The middle layer consists of mixed short fiberglass strands and PP-RCT, which is isolated by solid layers of PP-RCT on the inside and outside of the pipe. The middle Fibercore™ layer reduces expansion and contraction by up to 75 percent which reduces the installation cost by minimizing expansion loops and quantity of supports required in above ground systems. While the fittings do not have Fibercore™, fittings weld directly to all of Asahi’s PP-RCT systems.
PP-RCT Fibrecore™ Technology
Smoothness Factor
PP-RCT has a much smoother interior surface than Schedule 40 steel or copper tubing. Some references show maximum flow rates for steel pipe based on a Hazen-Williams (H-W) flow factor of 140. This is misleading, because even if the factor is 140 NEW, it would be much lower than that after just a short while in service. A more conservative and accurate operating value would be 90 for steel. PP-RCT is judged by the industry to have a H-W factor of 150. This stays consistent over the life of the piping system, and therefor provides greatly improved flow dynamics over steel.Indeed, copper’s H-W factor is typically 130 -140 when new, which is not as smooth as PP-RCT. A review of the chart below will show how, for a given flow rate or velocity, PP-RCT will provide less head loss than either steel or copper pipe. Conversely, for a given pressure drop, PP-RCT will provide more flow. Either way, PP-RCT provides a more energy efficient installation.

Installation
Fittings and pipes up to a 125mm (4-1/2”) diameter are socket welded.
Injection molded fittings from 160mm (6”) diameter can be joined using two different welding methods. Long fittings are joined using electrofusion or butt welding. Short fittings are joined using socket welding.

Green Technology
LEED
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is changing the way we think about how buildings are constructed, maintained and operated.
Our new PP-RCT piping systems fall in line with LEED’s guidelines and are considered environmentally friendly, as well as energy efficient.
An Asahitec™ system is one of the most environmentally friendly and cost-effective piping systems.Polypropylene is inherently not susceptible to corrosion, scaling and abrasion, which gives Asahiteca projected operating life of 100 years in some cases. With a superior internal smoothness andhigher velocity limits when compared to other piping systems, PP-RCT pipes will have a greaterflow . This gives you a reduction in the overall power consumption of your pumps. This savings willdirectly lower a building’s operating cost and its environmental impact. Through thesecharacteristics, an Asahitec™ piping system can be implemented in a variety of building systemswhile contributing to multiple LEED credits. It can contribute to the “Energy and Atmosphere” credit,by switching to a more efficient hydronic system compared to a forced air system. Extra credits canbe earned when a solar collector or geothermal systems are added . The “Indoor EnvironmentalQuality” Credit coupled with a hydronic system can simplify the amount of sensors need at deliverypoints in a forced air system, while being able to provide thermal comfort to individual occupants ormulti-occupant spaces without discomforting drafts. Asahitec™ can contribute to the “SustainableSites” credit through rainwater collection systems and recycled water systems. Being chemicallyinert, Asahitec™ is resistant to almost all acids, alkalies and organic solvents, and being freezetolerant it makes the perfect pipe for direct burial in an application like this.
