commentsRegarding our descriptions of the quality and condition of the items in this catalog, we try to

be honest with you as buyer, as we too, are often buyers. We try to rate the item in an overall condition then note any flaws. We understand that each of you has different criteria that often makean item acceptable or not. Therefore to make our ratings understood we will say that an item rated asfair is one we feel most collectors would put away with the hope of upgrading and that the most dis-criminating of you would not purchase the item at all due to a high percentage of missing label, poorpatina, dirt, corrosion, no charge or badly cracked neck. A good item is one that, although it doeshave some of what we consider slight, minor flaw(s), you could live with and still enjoy. Very goodshouldn’t be any problem to 98% of you. Excellent to near mint a very minor distinction, and mint isas new, without being new. Should you have any further questions we will be glad to help with moredetailed information about an item(s) as best we can.

Regarding our comments about rarity we can only go with what we have encountered in othercollections, at gun and cartridge shows and in various auctions and lists. Our rarity ratings are basedon the frequency we have seen or read about the item in question. Your exposure may be entirely different.

Regarding the photographs, we show the worst “side” and are photographing items (as closeas we can,) actual size. If an item is not, the text will show in the percentage we reduced or magnified.

Please read the whole catalog as a lot you desire might be in different section than you think. To those of you who undertook the massive task of authoring the books we use and to all of you

who took the time and effort to answer our questions, Thank you, we couldn’t have done it withoutyou.

We hope you will be successful with your bids and satisfied with the lots you won. We havemade every effort to give accurate descriptions regarding the who, what, why, etc., and hope thiseffort is of use to you.

A note about headstamps: on a 4 position headstamp we write starting at 12 o’clock, then go the 9 o’clock, 6 o’clock and 3 o’clock details. So basically we just start at the top then go left to right with everythingbelow 12 o’clock as a left to right reading. If the letters/numbers are facing inwards, read as a straight line.

NOTE: This is a reduction bid auction, spread bids are of no use as your high bid isreduced to an increment above the next highest bidder (or not, if it is a tie bid). Also pleasepay attention to the bid increments at the top of your bid sheet because your bid will be

reduced if it does not conform to the increments and you might loose the lot !All bidders MUST submit a signed bid sheet.

regarding reserves: Please consider any lot with a $300.00 [or higher] low estimate figure,as having the low estimate value, used as a reserve value guide.

Please note we are not an all reserve house, however we do have a minimum bid. Please note that the minimum bid on any lot is $15.00.

Please note our buyer premium is 15%.

We are taking U.S. bank credit cards for your wins but prefer your check (personal orotherwise}, money order or bank drafts. PayPal is acceptable only for overseas or Canadianbuyers.

EARLY & TRANSITIONAL1 With a light-tan carrier opened at the end but with a still intactcloth-pull, this .442 Westley Richards Monkey Tail Carbine hasa tan paper patched lead bullet with a string covered in tallowsecuring the tan paper body to the bullet base, while a thickgreased fibre-wad is attached to the head. With a stain on the body and a 3/4”long hairline crack, it is in fair to good estimate- 40-70

2 A commercial .568 Terry round by Eley as indicated by the black tear tape(R.L. and Broux & Moll used white, or in some cases, pink tape). The white paper casehas a felt wad only 3/10” thick. It has separated below the bullet and been repaired, losing some bits of paper in the process. The paper is lightly soiled, the felt wad isclean and the bullet is free of oxidation. Diameter over the paper is 0.576”, length is 2.07” and total weight is 594 grains. The thin paper carrier is split in several places, but the base folds are in surprisingly good condition, intact and unbroken. The carrier (not shown) is poor, but the cartridge may be considered in good shape. estimate- 70-100

3 This rare example of the 1.6” rimmed .50 Meigs experimental has araised headstamp, which is somewhat hard to read. Meigs apparently didcrush-tests with a number of his experimental rounds and we think the mostlikely reason was to see how his experimental inside centerfire priming systems would react. The rim on this example is .470” in width at it’s widest and .777” long, while the head is now about.393” in width, so a good bit of crushing force. The case shows some small dents and a light grey stain to one side, andwe are unsure what method was used to crush this. In good crushed condition. estimate- 300-400

4 This .54 Burnside is an example of the so-called “dish base” style with aflatter base with a wide shallow dish around the center hole. Some considerthis to be a variation, but we (and Jim Tillinghast) believed this indicated afired case caused by the shape of the carbine chamber. It has a darkly tonedbrass case but a nice lead bullet. With a small dent to the Foster grease groove, it is in good condition. estimate- 40-70

5 A .56 Billinghurst Requa Mitrailleuse. The rounded head has a .740” /18.81mm rim [known to us with rim diameters from .720” to .752”] and a center flash hole in the base which is soldered to the brass body. With a lightlyoxidized cast lead bullet, it has uneven case color, otherwise it is in good condition. estimate- 40-60

6 A .56 Billinghurst Requa Mitrailleuse. The rounded head has a .745” /18.93mm rim [known to us with rim diameters from .720” to .752”] and a centerflash hole in the base which is soldered to the brass body. With a oxidized castlead bullet, it has uneven case color and marker, otherwise it is in good condition. estimate- 40-60

9 This .74 Morse Type 1 for a 14 B gage shotgun has a once tinned-brass case with a tinned-brass insert in the head holding a felt washerand a copper ‘top-hat’ musket cap next to the 2-pronged “V” shapedtinned(?)-brass anvil, which has been soldered to the inner sides of thecase. The head is .751” / 19.14mm and the mouth is .737” / 18,72mmin diameter, and it is 2.207” / 56.07mm long. The remaining tinning can be seen under the rim and on the base insert, otherwise it is in good to very good condition. estimate- 200-250

8 This very uncommon .58 Morse blank, has a tinned-brass case with a rubberizedwasher and a copper ‘top-hat’ musket cap, while the mouth has a cork topwad secured byboth a slight taper crimp and some shellac looking sealant, The case has a small, light“T622” hand engraved in the side near the rim, otherwise it is in very good condition. estimate- 400-500

7 A .56 Billinghurst Requa Mitrailleuse case. The rounded head has a.737” / 18.73mm rim [known to us with rim diameters from .720” to .752”]and a center flashhole in the base which was once soldered to the brassbody. In poor condition, with light grey residue on the brass body. estimate- 15-25

Page 8: PP CCpdbullets.com/catalog_order_files/#18.pdfPP CC An AUCTION HOUSE for Ammunition & Related Items Is honored to present Auction 18 featuring the 17th part of the James C. Tillinghast

15] These 3 Norwegian, 9mm Pinfires all have copper cases with, brass pins, araised ‘ ♚ [over] A ‘ headstamp and lead bullets secured with a choke crimp. By

Christiania Arsenal, there are slight variations in the headstamp and/or thebullet seating. All have light lead oxidation and toning, while one as a paper label, otherwise these are in good condition. estimate- 30-50

10 Said to perhaps be a commercial version, this .58 Morse 1.43” brasscase shows 4-piece construction. The body has a vertical soldered seamand the rim was formed by soldering a brass washer to the base. Missingthe washer and percussion cap, the 2-prong iron anvil is attached to aninner piece which fits against the case walls The bullet is lead and showsone groove. The case has a smallish area of discolor otherwise this isnicely toned and in good condition. estimate- 300-400

11 Unheadstamped, with a slightly off-center small {.160”} copperprimer, this most unusual .40-40 Maynard M-1882 “style” {1.733”} brasscased example has a typical belted lead bullet, however the flat head iswithout the normal rounded edge to the rim, which here measures .518” in diameter, and is .040” thick. With a .453”head, a .450” mouth, and a .400” bullet, it is by a maker unknown to us, however our “best guess” is U.M.C.Co. Thecase is lightly toned and the lead bullet has very light oxidation, so in good to very good condition. estimate- 35-50

12 This ca. 1863, very early .50 Maynard wire extractor has a 1.223” drawn brass casewith a center-holed base and a looped copper wire soldered to the case at two points onthe outer edge of the head where it starts to become the body. The .518” lead bullet is nicely cast and the overall length is1,764”. The case has a couple of relatively small dark areas, and one end of the wire has become unattached and it semssomeone tried to careully re-attach it with glue, but it is still in it’s original position. In good condition. estimate- 1500-2000

13 A .75 Maynard Flopear. Unheadstamped with a center-holed .115” / 2.94mm thickbase which has been soldered to the base of the nicely colored brass body and aswaged lead bullet with a blunt flat nose. Thought to be a “Grass Valley Ca.” example, the bullet is not seated squarely, otherwise it is in good condition. estimate- 150-200

14 With a raised “XYTHOS special” lettering in the lid of the 2-piece half cover redplastic box and “Austria ADK 3822” raised on the bottom, this 2mm Pinfire box seemsfull of 3.77mm long copper cased examples with steel pins and a white topwad. Thebox has the original tan foam ‘anti-rattle’ packing and may have once had a side labelas we see slight residue of somthing on one side, otherwise it is in excellent condition. [photo 2X size] estimate- 50-70

MAYNARD

PINFIRE

\16 This pair of green paper LERCHE pinfire shot shells both show a low-base brass head and nocase print. The 16 bore is a 2,575” /65.4mm long new primed empty, The 12 bore is loaded, 2,330” /59.18mm long, has a nice roll crimp and a “J.P DANNEFELSER N.Y. 4” off-white topwad. Both are in verygood to excellent condition. estimate- 40-60

\17 A steel .22 or 5.5mm gage. Unheadstamped it is .552”/14.04mm long over all, andhas “Cal 5,5 [over] 1,27 Rebut [over] “5220.14 [over] 233.0767 [over] “logo” 2_77” etched into the

sides. We think European made, it is in excellent condition. estimate- 50-70

\18 Center fire, this 5.6 Hungarian Militery target round ihasa slighty dished head with an impressed ‘ M ‘. the copper case has a deepchoke cromp below the round lead ball bullet which is also seucured by a tapercrimp. With light lead oxidation it is in very good condition. estimate- 60-90

RIMFIRE

19] A 75 round .22 collection. A few of the better are a copper washed steelcased LR with a ‘VZ ‘ headstamp, a Short wood-saboted shot, a W.R.A.Co. LRproof and there is at least one by Remington with a “L” case mouth letter. Shorts,Longs & Long rifles are represented mostly US makers (a couple Robin Hood’s)plus an early unheadstamped .22 Long. Also is a solid bullet version of the center-fire LR  headstamped ‘ N in a shield ‘, and a couple of tool blanks. Some show oxidation, but these are generally in good condition. [photo 80%] estimate- 20-40

22 Made by U.M.C.Co. and unheadstamped, this copper cased .32 Ex Long Wesson has alightly oxidized lead bullet with two exposed smooth grooves. With a 1.669” / 42.41mm OALand a small case dent, it is still in good condition. estimate- 40-70
