RAINHILL GOES LIVE ON THE BBC On Monday 18th June, BBC TV will broadcast live some parts of their BBC Breakfast

programme live from Rainhill High School.

Between 7am and 9am, they will be meeting and interviewing sports students. This is to

coincide with England’s first game in the World Cup and because Trent Alexander-

Arnold went to Rainhill High School.

Those students who have represented the school in girls or boys football, this school

year, plus some Netball and Tennis team players have been asked to take part in

filming. They will be making an early start to school, with filming starting at 6.30am!

Y10 STUDENTS - MONDAY MORNING Due to the BBC filming, please note that there will be a delay to the start of the Y10

LP3 Maths exam, this will now start at 9:30am. All students must go to their form room –

not the Sports Hall, for registration and tutors must escort students to the Sports Hall for

a 9:30am start.

RADA SHAKESPEARE AWARDS Here are some of the fantastic Year 8 and

Year 9 pupils receiving their certificates for

passing the RADA Shakespeare Bronze

Award. This is an outstanding achievement

as the award is normally only offered to

pupils over the age of 15 so for them to

have passed is phenomenal. The exam

entailed the pupils learning both a speech

from one of Shakespeare’s plays and a

sonnet that they had to recite and perform

for the examiner.

Receiving their awards are Arabella Reed,

Mia Follis, Shanaya Randev, Taya Strange,

Andrea Beesley, Thomas Chamberlain and

Charlotte Strong.

Mrs Speers, Drama Teacher.

DANCE MANIA 2018 The 10th Anniversary of the Dance Mania annual showcase took place on 9th June 2018

at St Helens Theatre Royal.

The evening was an outstanding success as our students performed in front of a sell

out audience of family, friends and Rainhill staff.

The evening saw over 300 students perform dances in a wide range of genres including

Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Commercial, Contemporary and Lyrical Modern. It also showcased

the amazing choreography of our Arts Leaders Alicia Lalley (Y10), Libby Clegg (Y13),

Charlotte Hanley (Y12), Sian Glynn (Y12), Ellie Turner (Y12) and Alicia Reira-Lloyd (Y12).

Year 7 and Year 8 Dance Clubs showcased their potential as future stars in their Dance

performances. Also performing were students from De La Salle school who take part in

our widening participation programme by attending Rainhill High School weekly to

study BTEC Tech Award - Dance.

We are extremely proud of the students conduct backstage, their character through

the rehearsal process, their resilience and determination to consistently strive to

improve.

We bid farewell to our Y13 students who are all pursuing careers in the Creative Industry

and have secured first class university places for September 2018. It was also the final

time that Y11 would perform together but we are looking forward to seeing all the

students again as part of our Sixth Form.

We are very proud of the students and excited for our next showcase in January 2019!

Mrs Aylward, Head of Performing Arts.

RAINHILL HIGH SCHOOL PRESS STATEMENT Parents and local community members may have heard rumours regarding an

incident involving a parent trying to gain access to the site last week and we therefore

would like to dispel those rumours by providing you with the facts.

On Thursday 7th June 2018, a parent attempted to gain access to the school looking to

confront someone else’s child about an incident that had occurred outside of school.

Thanks to the prompt action of staff, no children were hurt and the parent did not

gain access to the building.

This follows an unrelated, instance several months ago, involving a video being posted

on Facebook regarding an alleged instance of bullying.

The school recognises its wider responsibility for the education and safety of pupils and

therefore, in instances such as those mentioned above, would always liaise with the

relevant agencies (such as the Police and Local Authority Safeguarding Unit)

immediately in order to bring the issue(s) to a swift and satisfactory resolution.

It should be noted that both of the aforementioned matters have now been resolved.

The school continues to view the safety of its pupils and staff as its top priority. Should

you ever have any concerns, you should always contact the school via telephone,

email or in person.

ARTS EXHIBITION NOTICE Can parents please be aware the GCSE & A-Level ADT Exhibition and Final Show has

been postponed until Wednesday 18th July 2018.

END OF YEAR REWARDS TRIP Dear Parent/Carer

The end of year rewards trip is on Wednesday 18th July at Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

You were written to earlier in the year with the criteria that your child must achieve if

they are able to attend. The final decision, based on the criteria below, will be taken

on Friday 15th June.

95% Attendance and Punctuality

Attitude To Learning 1-3 in 11 out of 13 subjects in all Learning Programmes

(Years 7 and 8)

Attitude To Learning 1-3 in 7 out of 8 subjects in all Learning Programmes

(Years 9 and 10)

If your child did not start the year well, but has shown considerable improvement over

a significant period of time, then their Year Progress Leader will present their case to

Mrs Munro and Mr Lamb who will have the final decision on whether they will be

invited to attend. If they to do not achieve the criteria and have not made sufficient

improvement either, then an alternative day will be organised for them in school. For

those that have achieved the criteria, a letter will be posted out to you week

beginning Monday 18th June with details of the trip and when payment for it is due.

COUNCIL’S OPEN-WATER SWIMMING WARNING While the country currently enjoys a nice spell of warm weather, St Helens Council’s

safer communities team would like to remind the public on the dangers of open-water

swimming.

The announcement comes following the deaths of two teenagers in Greater

Manchester this week whose bodies were found in reservoirs in unrelated incidents –

while the council has also received reports of young children swimming in the open

waters in the Parr area of the borough.

St Helens Council’s portfolio holder for safer communities, Councillor Anthony Burns has

stressed the importance of staying clear of lakes, ponds and reservoirs as temperatures

soar because of the fatal consequences swimming in these types of environments can

often lead to.

“Under no circumstances must anyone attempt to swim in open-water,” Councillor

Burns said. “Sadly, this type of risk has resulted in tragic outcomes recently and even

the strongest of swimmers can become overwhelmed by ice cold water and drown.

“Swimming is an activity many of us enjoy during the weather is nice - but this should

be done in supervised areas only such as leisure centre swimming pools.”

YEAR 7 LEARNING PROGRAMME - ASSESSMENT WEEK 3 From Monday 18th June to Thursday 21st June 2018 (inclusive), all students in Year 7 will

be undertaking assessments in the subjects they are currently studying. It should be

noted that all assessments are cumulative and therefore based potentially on

anything that your son/daughter has studied during this academic year.

The Year 7 assessment will be based on a cumulative exam paper in their subject

from which a teacher is able to give a fine GCSE grade (1 to 9). Year 7 students will

complete their examinations in their classrooms under exam conditions. For

performance and practical subjects (Drama, Music, Art and Technology) the Year 7

assessment will be based on a current substantive piece of work in their subject from

which a teacher is able to give a fine GCSE grade (1 to 9).

Please see the exam timetable so your son/daughter is aware of when their

examinations take place. Please could you encourage and support your son/

daughter to prepare thoroughly for these exams as they will give them a good

indication of the progress they have made to date.

I have included some guidance around revision and preparing effectively for exams.

For example, in the lead up to the examinations your son/daughter should be

completing approximately 2 hours of independent revision per day. Your son/

daughter should be very clear about what is being examined from their class teacher.

I have asked all teaching staff to set revision homework via Show My Homework for

the next few weeks until the examinations have been sat which your son/daughter

should record in their planner.

I trust that you find this information useful and that we are able to best work together

to ensure that your son/daughter continues to make progress in all the subjects they

are studying.

Please find attached the exam timetable so your son/daughter is aware of when their

examinations take place. All morning exams will start as soon as possible at 9.00am. It

is vital that your son/daughter is in school and registered at 8.50am with their tutor to

allow them to get to the Arts Theatre for a 9.00am start.

Afternoon examinations commence at 1.10pm. Your son/daughter should report to

the Arts Theatre immediately from lunch.

Please could you encourage and support your son/daughter to prepare thoroughly

for these exams as they will give them a good indication of the progress they have

made to date and what they need to do to improve in order that they can secure

fantastic exam results in the summer of 2019. I have included some guidance around

revision and preparing effectively for exams.

Mr Cunningham, Deputy Head Teacher - Director of Studies.
