• Preview the text

Look at the title, photos, illustrations, or graphics and make a prediction about the text. Create questions you want answered after you have read the text.

• Activate prior knowledge

Look at the photos, title, and illustrations and decide what you already know about this topic. Read the introduction to have a clear understanding what needs to be known prior to reading this text.

Before Reading

• Set a Purpose to read

Think about why you are reading this particular text. Is it to form an opinion, to critic a certain writing style, or for research? While reading revert back to this question to emphasize where your focus should be.

During reading

• Clarify understanding

Use graphics or illustrations to understand what I am reading.

Decide if the information you are reading is relevant to the main idea.

Mark any words you need to research for meaning.

Stop reading when text does not make sense and clarify text before moving on.

During reading

• Make connections

Compare what you are reading to what you already know.

Think if you can relate the text to other text or the text to life experiences

During reading

Make connections continued…

Ask yourself questions like:

• Has anything similar ever happened to me?

• Can I relate to these characters?

• Does this story remind me of something?

After Reading

• Recall

Summarize the highlights from the text in writing.

Are you able to answer your questions you created prior to reading?

Form your own opinion about what you have read
