Good practice for handling carcinogens

Example:

– Branch Kapfenberg (81 employees) of which 64 welders handling cancerogen work-materials like welding-smoke, dust and chrome VI and nickel

– 2014: second frequent premature consequence-inspection of all Austrian Small and Medium Enterprises (SME)

– Measures-catalogue in tight collaboration with labor inspectorate and preventive forces

In collaboration with our Occupational Health doctor, Apoloner-Kurz PhD, (from the Occupational Health Centre medicon) the following measures have been put into action:

– T(echnical)

– O(rganizational)

– P(ersonal)


Measures catalogue for handling carcinogens

Technical measures

– Mix of stationary extraction units and mechanical ventilation instead of mobile extraction untis

– Installation of up-to-date new extraction units (by company Aigner)

– Release shafts direct to release container for contaminated workwear



Organizational measures

– Yearly and „ad-hoc“ basis trainings by EHS Manager and Occupational Health staff

– Half-yearly training regarding respiratory protection

– Regular cleaning of all hall-floors after shift end

– Request of consequent implementation of measures with respective ad-hoc mandatory training



Personal measures

– Additional respiratory protection in heavily loaded areas using special welding helmets with integrated fans and filtres

– 3 sets of workwear per worker

– Plan for skin safety and training of correct use of skin-protection articles

Result of implementing the measures catalogue after three years:

– Reduction of pollutants partly below legal regulation limits

– Only isolated reduction of inspection-intervals

– Low values during the follow-up inspection, to the point of falling below the biological workplace reference value (BAR)



Status quo:

– 2014 25 workers inspected Chrome VI……………………. 2 workers below BAR limit Nickel…………………………. 10 workers below BAR limit

– 2017 50 workers inspected Chrome VI……………………. 4 workers below BAR limit Nickel…………………………. 28 workers below BAR limit

Conclusion

– Hygiene measures were highly efficient

– No eating or drinking on work-place, emphasis on body-hygiene

– Workwear („Montur“) remains in the company and periodically cleaned by professional laundry

– Special regard to diversity

– Regular cleaning and correct storing of helmets (in closed bags)

– Fixed drinking boxes near every welding workplace
