EN 81-80 revision the journey :
➢ The first draft to update prEN 81-80:2016 went to CEN enquiry & received an negative result
➢ Working Group 10 then reformed and revised the standard addressing all comments from the 2016 enquiry
➢ The standard went to final vote and was approved in Jan 2019
➢ FprEN81-80 is now awaiting publication by CEN

The main changes can be identified as:
➢ Protective measures updated to align with EN81-20
➢ Eleven new hazards have been added
➢ The numbering has changed to keep a logical order of items
➢ Technical requirements for protective measures are now incorporated in the checklist Annex A
➢ Methodology for the identification, evaluation and risk level of the hazardous situations has moved to chapter 5
➢ The checklist now contains a new column with risk levels for items in accordance with EN 81‐1/2:1998 or EN 81‐80:2003

BS EN81-20:2014 created a need to update the checklist
The majority of lifts in the UK will fall under one of the following categories;
A. Lifts installed prior to the Lift Regulations (BS 2655 & BS 5655)
B. Lifts installed pre Lift Regulations with components already upgraded in accordance with EN 81-80:2003
C. Lifts installed to the Lift Regulations (BS EN 81-1 & BS EN 81-2, BS EN 81-21)

Depending when the equipment was installed some items may have different priority levels
A. Installed prior to the Lift Regulations (BS 2655 & BS 5655)
B. Components already upgraded in accordance with EN 81 80:2003
C. Lifts installed to the Lift Regulations (BS EN 81-1 & BS EN 81-2, BS EN 81-21)

Priority levels for lift installed to EN 81-1/2 and EN 81-80:2003
There are some items where the safety level has slightly increased with EN81-20:2014
- inspection control in the pit,
- refuge spaces,
- door strength,
- unintended car movement protection, etc.

In cases of significant differences in safety level between EN 81‐20 & EN 81‐1/2 or EN 81‐80:2003 different priority levels are specified
