The Foundation Stage journey2017-18 is coming closer to the endof a very successful year filled withlearning and fun. As we are busyconsolidating our learning that tookplace throughout the year, it isimpressive to see how independentand self-disciplined the childrenhave become, setting their goalsand achieving their personal targets.It is a proud moment for all of us tosee the progress they have made,both emotionally and socially. Wehave worked with different learningmaterials, with the children graspingmany important concepts in allareas of the curriculum. Thechildren have all shown a great dealof thoughtfulness not just for theirown work but in taking care of theirenvironment and national identityas well. They have enjoyed a widevariety of visits and activities thisyear.

Our KG2 students celebrated the 10thGraduation Ceremony. The childrenperformed with great pride andconfidence to honor and representthe theme “Year of Zayed”, withvarious performance acts. Thechildren were very proud collectingtheir certificates, and after thecertificate ceremony, Teachers andparents were proud to celebrate theirachievement with them. As part ofthe transition from KG 2 to Grade 1,the children had the opportunity tovisit Grade 1 classes for one period toget familiarized with theenvironment.A gentle reminder to all our parents,that the last day of KG will be on,Wednesday 20thJune 2018. You arerequested to please send your childto school, as we are still reviewingthe curriculum to get the studentsready for the next level.Wishing all families, a blessed monthof Ramadan.

The year 2018 commemorates 100 yearssince the birth of the late Sheikh Zayed binSultan Al Nahyan, our Father of the UAE. Tohonor this special event, His HighnessSheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan,President of the United Arab Emirates hasdeclared that 2018 is the Year of Zayed. Weat Diyar embrace our leaders vision in ourdaily learning.Magnificent Marvelous May might haveswept through as quick as a flash, but wecertainly had plenty of fun in the Englishdepartment.Grade one’s enjoyed learning aboutinstruments in the UAE. Grade two’s hadfun preparing habitat booklets aboutanimals and the environment. Grade three’sexperienced making robots integrated withpast, present and future UAE. Grade four’sresearched about the development in theUAE creating a timeline, poster and picturesin a brochure. Grade five’s created balloonrockets and wrote about their experiments.Grade six students were excited to advertisesports cars. Grade seven’s visualized life inthe future in the UAE. Grade eight’s wereenthusiastic to learn about Sheikh Zayed’svision of the UAE and grade nine’sdiscovered that the sky is the not the limitand how it influences us. Grade ten’s wereeager to study about the amazing qualitiesof animals. Grade eleven’s conductedsurveys about conflicts and learned how toresolve conflicts.

As we had fun learning English weintegrated and celebrated 100years of Sheikh Zayed within ourCurriculum. Assemblies were abuzz with Diyar Talks where ourstudents presented weekly talksabout Sheikh Zayed, Vision of theUAE and our school vision andmission. With Diyar successfullyattaining accreditation with theMinistry of Education andRamadan being observed, May hasshowered Diyar with abundantblessings. The English departmentwishes you all blessed Ramadan.

Elementary School

In elementary the last week or so hasbeen busy with almost all grades takingtheir final post-test, as well as finishingand presenting their projects. Mostclasses are now working on the topics thatwill support the students in their move toa higher grade in September. All gradeswill be setting some work to practice onover the long summer break to help easethe transition in September.

Grade 1Grade 1 has just finished their drumproject. This was a joint science and mathproject that also brought a little bit ofEmirati culture into their math and sciencelessons. They were investigating sound,and built and tested their own drums tosee what sounds were made by differentsizes and shapes. They then played theirdrums and had to count patterns in therhythms being made.

Grade 2The project for grade 2 was a science andMath collaboration, looking at habitatsand what lives in them. The studentsmade some lovely habitat models andsuccessfully extracted and presented datafrom their models. The models they builtwere very good, with a lot of time andeffort on their part.

Grade 3All students in grade 3 have been taking partin Project Based Learning this term. Theyhave investigated energy and used themathematical topics of measuring, length,weight, area and volume to both collect andwork with the data they have generated withtheir experiments in science. All their lessonshave been set around the theme of energy,they have been encouraged to find out howthings work by experimenting with them andworking it out for themselves. All of thestudents have really enjoyed this method oflearning and some even thought that it hadmade a hard topic seem much easier tounderstand.

Grade 4The Grade 4 students are working on theirprojects now, and are doing a great job with atricky topic. They are being very creative andI’m looking forward to seeing their finalresults. They are also about to take their finalpost-test in Maths. Good luck grade 4. Theproject is another science/math collaboration,involving earthquakes and designing andbuilding models of buildings to see how theywould survive an earthquake. Our safetyofficer very kindly went to every class andinstructed them on earthquake drills, anactivity that all of the students really enjoyed.

Grade 5The grade 5 project was a math/science/Englishcollaboration, involving the students buildingballoon rockets to investigate one of Newton’sLaws. There was a huge variety of designs andthe students really enjoyed both making therockets and using them to collect data whichthey then used their math skills to analyse andpresent in a meaningful way. A great piece ofwork grade 5.

High SchoolIn grades 7-11 the students have been very busyindeed. They have all been working on their termprojects and doing their absolute best to producesome really amazing work. They are now focusedon finishing the last few bits of content and thenrevising for the end of year exams.

Grade 6The project was all about designing and producing acity plan using the mathematical techniques theyhave learned this term and a very big splash ofinnovation and creativity. This project and the wayin which the grade 6 students were approaching itwas specifically mentioned to me by theMathematics inspector as something she had liked alot, so very well done grade 6.

Grade 7The project was based around circles. The studentshad many small challenges to overcome in order tocomplete the project looking at the surface area ofcircles. In science the students have been looking atthe solar system and space this term. Their projectswere finished earlier in the month and were linkedto space and the planets.

Grade 8The students in grade 8 have been challenged to usetheir skills in geometry to design the next iconicbuilding for Dubai. They had to research how Dubaihas changed over the last 40 years and then design,draw and model their idea for a new building tochallenge the likes of the Burj Khalifa and the pictureframe. In grade 8 students have been studyingwaves, which has given them an opportunity topractice some maths skills as well while they havebeen calculating frequency and velocity. They haveall built models to demonstrate the types of wavesas well .

Grade 9The grade 9 project is also a design challenge.Students have been challenged to design and builda bridge using lolly sticks and the work they havebeen doing on trigonometry. So far the finishedprojects have been brilliant. We are very proud ofthe quality of work and the time and effort thatour grade 9 students have put into making thesebeautiful projects. In biology the students haveresearched a variety of illnesses and producedbeautiful presentations giving detailedinformation about their chosen illness.

Grade 10The project is not quite finished yet, but is startingto look like a lot of fun and a serious challenge forour students. The project involves solving mathproblems in order to compete against yourclassmates to win a board game. The studentshave really enjoyed doing this, and they havedisplayed a very competitive spirit. Getting aproblem wrong caused a penalty and having tomove backwards, while getting it correct allowedfor a forward movement. In Physics students haveinvestigated electromagnetic induction by buildingtheir own coils and testing the inductive affects.

Grade 11Students have completed their projects in the lastweek. They have now finished their post tests andare focused on revision for the end of year examsin all subjects. It is very important that they carryon attending so that they can be supportedthrough the revision process and achieve goodgrades at the end of the year. In Physics studentshave investigated electromagnetic induction bybuilding their own coils and testing the inductiveaffects.

Grade 11 Pre-CalculusThis project was very challenging. The studentshad to work with quadratic equations and produceboth numerical and graphical solutions in order tocomplete the project. They then had to design thedisplay to show their work.

Grade 10Students learned about poverty and itscauses and how countries are impactedby poverty and unemployment. Theyalso covered taxes and why governmentsimplement taxes. Most importantly,students learned about theimplementation of VAT in the UAE andhow it will help the UAE economy.They also completed a project onInnovations in Banking and came up withtheir own ideas as to how they canimprove banking services. The ideasranged from face recognition, voiceactivated accounts, eye radar activationand debit cards that are able to show abalance.

Grade 11Students covered the topics of Money &

Banking and learned how money and theDirham has evolved in the UAE ascompared to its current day form. Theyhave also started on Financial Marketsand the role these markets play in theeconomy .

Grade 9

Students learned how todescribe the qualities of aleader and to identify the threetypes of leadership (autocratic,democratic, and free-rein).

Grade11

Grade 1 students learned all types ofjumping and landing.

Grade 2 learned the forward roll ingymnastic and started creating gymnasticsequence.

All Grade 3 Girls and Grade 4 Girlspracticed shapes and balance ingymnastics.

Grades 3 Boys had athletics games.

Grades 4 Boys practiced and improvedthe following skills in football: controland passing, dribbling, heading andkicking.

Grade 5 Boys practiced shooting inFootball.

Grade 5-7 Girls learned floating (front,back) and kicking in swimming.

Grade 8-11 Girls practiced andimproved the following skills inbasketball: Lay ups and shooting,attacking strategies.

Grade 6-11 Boys practiced andimproved their skills in volleyball: spikeand serving.

In order to promote healthy growth andto enable Diyar Dibba’s students to bemore physically active during schoolhours, P.E department conducted sportsactivities during break time forelementary and high school studentswhere they get to play different sportslike table tennis and athletics.

What health and safetyin schools is all about…

Health and safety in schools means focusingon how the real hazards and risks aremanaged. How does the school achieve this?By:1) Putting in place sensible approaches tohealth and safety, with clear policies thatfocus on the real risks. 2) Implementingarrangements that manage the risks to pupils,staff and visitors who may be affected by theschool's activities. 3) Informing staff andpupils about the real and significant risks inthe school and the precautions they need totake to manage them. 4) Making sure thatstaff have the relevant information andtraining to manage risks on a day to day basis,including access to competent health andsafety advice where needed. 5) Checking thatthe control measures have been implementedand remain appropriate and effective.

It’s important that when developing a healthand safety system, the focus should always beon controlling the real risks. Health and safetyis about doing things safely, not findingreasons not to do them.

Dear Parents,

Ramadan Kareem! The Counseling Department at Diyar hopes everyone is enjoying the Holy Month. Here are a few reminders from ourdepartment.As you know, the safety of our students is paramount for our school. It is our number one priority to make sure our students feel happyand safe at our school. For this reason, we have the Child Protection Policy.

By now, all of our students and staff have been introduced to this policy. Our students know that, not only the counselors, but also theschool administration, are always available for them and that they can approach any of us at any given time if they want to talk about anysort of issue they are facing. Students also know that if they ever encounter any type of abuse by a teacher, parent, another student, or anyadult, they can come and see us. All they have to do is fill out a Counselor’s Referral form, which is available at the back of every classroomdoor, and hand it over to their homeroom teacher, Floor Supervisor. They know that they can bring the referral directly to the counselor’soffice. Any of the counselors will follow on the issue with the student as soon as possible.

And in an effort to keep our students safe while they are in school, we also introduceda Code of Conduct, which list a series of behavioral expectations that we as educatorsexpect from our students. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with thesebehavioral expectations. Remember that these expectations are also meant to instill asense of responsibility and accountably among our students.

Common Behavior Expectations

We expect students to adhere to the followingexpectations while at Diyar International Private School:

1. Respect yourself, respect others and respect schoolproperty.2. Come prepared to class each day with books, pencil caseand notebooks.3. Follow directions in all areas of the school building.4. Be at school on time.5. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.6. No bad language, threatening others or insulting others.7. This is an English-speaking environment, please speakEnglish.8. Stay in designated areas. Play safely.9. Food should be eaten in designated areas (cafeteria,outside, classroom when given permission); garbageshould be disposed of properly.10.
