Whether or not a child is sufficiently mature to make the decision will depend on the individual child’s maturity and understanding, and the nature of the decision that he or she is being asked to make. Specific factors which may also be taken into account in considering whether a child is sufficiently mature to make a decision include: • The child’s age • The nature of the procedure • The degree to which the child is socially independent of his/her parents, and in

particular, whether the child is living alone and is self-supporting • The child’s insight into his or her condition • The child’s apparent maturity, intelligence and attitude • Whether it is the child, or the child’s parent or parents, who initiated contact with

a medical practitioner • Family dynamics • Social history • The child’s personality
