2 CASA of DuPage County | 2018 Annual Report Powerless Children Need Powerful Friends 3
March 2019
Dear Friends,
July 2018 marked the beginning of CASA’s 25th year of serving abused, neglected, dependent and vulnerable children in DuPage. Each year more than 700,000 children across the United States experience abuse or neglect.
In 1993, a small group of local citizens came together to create our program: CASA of DuPage. A formal agreement with the 18th Judicial Circuit Court was signed and we continue to be the only organization providing court ordered advocacy for abused, neglected and dependent children in DuPage. Since then, 939 volunteer advocates have stepped into the lives of 2,127 children and championed hope for them.
We’ve come far over the last 25 years. From training 14 advocates and serving 15 children in 1993 to serving 411 children in FY18 through the efforts of 167 volunteers.
Currently, there are 85,000 CASA volunteers across the country serving 250,000 children. Sadly, another 400,000 children are waiting for a CASA.
Studies show kids with a CASA spend up to 25% less time in the court system and are half as likely to re-enter foster care. Children with a CASA receive more help while in the system...and are more likely to have a consistent, responsible adult presence. Children with a CASA spend less time in foster care, do better in school, are more likely to pass their courses, are less likely to have poor conduct in school and are less likely to be expelled.
I am humbled and honored to say that while 400,000 children in our country are waiting for someone to be their voice in court, every single child in DuPage who needs a CASA, has one.
Because of you and your generous support, our services are free to the children and families in court and do not impact the taxpayers in any way.
Powerless children need powerful friends. From all of the powerless children you will affect but never meet, thank you.
With sincere appreciation,
Lisa M. DrakeExecutive Director

35 new volunteers were welcomed in FY2018. These wonderful individuals were trained and sworn in as “Friends of the Court” to be the “voice” for children, who through no fault of their own, were a part of DuPage County’s juvenile court system.
