WHEN TO CHOOSE A PAPR

Respiratory contaminants are encountered in different forms, presenting as either

particulates (dust) or gaseous/vapour hazards. Different filters are required to protect

against particles, specific gases or a combination of both.

The use of a PAPR means there is little to no breathing resistance. Unlike standard APR

(Air Purifying Respirators) the PAPR creates a fanning effect that keeps the face piece/

hood/mask from fogging and the wearer more comfortable, reducing worker fatigue when

worn in non-Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH) environments.

PAPR’s are breathable air-purifying respirators and not approved for use in IDLH

situations, as they filter breathable air which must contain sufficient oxygen to support

life. IDLH environments require the use of Self Contained Breathing Apparatus or Airline

Breathing Apparatus (which are also available from Scott Safety) as these systems provide

breathable air from external sources.

ABOUT PAPRPOWERED AIR PURIFYING RESPIRATORS

WHAT IS A PAPR SYSTEM?

A Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) is a type of personal protective equipment

designed for those working in hazardous breathing environments. A PAPR system provides

a continuous flow of filtered air and reduces the risk of exposure to airborne contaminants.

An approved system comprises a blower unit, headtop/hood or respirator/mask and

appropriate filters.

WHICH PAPR IS RIGHT FOR YOUR TASK?

SELECTING RESPIRATORY PROTECTION EQUIPMENT (RPE)

AS/NZS 1715:2009 provides a basis for the selection of respirators, training in the use of

respirators, check for fit and provision for the care and maintenance of equipment to help

ensure an effective respirator program is in place.

Scott Safety offers three main families of PAPR; T-Power, Proflow SC120/ Proflow EX120 and

Proflow SC160. Each of these blower systems is supported by a range of headtops (hoods and

masks) and a selection of filters to protect against a variety of contaminants.

Choosing the right system for your task is relatively straightforward, with the following considerations;

RANGE OF HAZARDS TO MANAGE

T-Power and Proflow SC120/EX120 offer a wide selection of headtop and filter choices to

cover a range of tasks and hazards whereas Proflow SC160 is primarily designed for use with

tight-fitting face masks or helmet-hood combinations for more demanding industrial tasks.

DECONTAMINATION SIMPLICITY

Proflow SC160 offers a high level of decontamination convenience, being designed for

shower decontamination.

WORKER RESPIRATORY DEMAND

Proflow SC160 offers the highest flowrate within our PAPR range at 160 litres per minute,

ideal for workers performing demanding physical tasks such as asbestos stripping or other

industrial processes.

FLEXIBILITY

T-Power offers a range of expansion options as well as the convenience of a removable

battery pack. With T-Power, the system can be expanded to accommodate triple filters or

additional battery packs.

T-POWEREXPANDABLE POWERED AIR RESPIRATOR

Scott Safety T-Power is a modular powered respiratory

system that meets the latest EN & AS/NZS standards.

The heart of the system is the T-Power blower; a

lightweight, compact, powered-air respirator which

is comfortable and easy to use. T-Power features an

electronic management system that monitors airflow

rates and filter use. The unit compensates airflow so

that a minimum 140l/min for open headtops and

120l/min for facemasks is maintained.

With a wide range of headtops & filters, T-Power

provides one of the most versatile respiratory solutions

available.

The (FM3) mask is based on Scott Safety’s Promask range, proven

in a wide variety of industrial applications.

Promask (FM3) utilises a T-bar face seal design, which provides

a highly efficient seal with minimal pressure on the face and

incorporates a wide panoramic visor to maximise the field

of vision and a front mounted speech diaphragm for easy

communication with colleagues. Promask (FM3) is available in 2

sizes and also a hypo-allergenic silicone version (FM3 SIL).

The FH61 is a purpose built combination headtop for one of

the most demanding environments. The FH61 incorporates

respiratory, head, face, eye and optional hearing protection

to give the user a complete welding headtop solution.
