• Example Clients- Lakeland Dairies, Abbotts, Kerry Research Centre Naas.
• Developed in 2005 as an extension of the hugely popular Fatstrippa separator (4000 + restaurant installations).
• Recognised that food process facilities required an answer that did not devalue the potential value in the waste stream.
• Existing methods add material to the waste which negates any potential value and actually creates a further disposal cost.
• There must be a natural way to remove Fats, Oils and Greases from waste streams which does not degrade the potential value.
Recoil Systems
Process Background• Fats, Oils and Greases ( FOG’s)
do not naturally mix with water.
• The intermolecular attraction between similar FOG’s is far higher than between FOG’s and water.
• There is a distinct difference in Specific Gravity of FOG’s and water.
Client Induced Effluent Issues
• The creation of emulsions as part of the primary production process
• The addition of emulsifying agents as part of CIP systems
• The use of pump wells in effluent transfer
• The use of high shear effluent transfer systems
• The use of balancing tanks in effluent process
The Solution• Install low shear non contact effluent transfer
systems
• Minimise volumes and the length of time effluent is held in pump wells and balancing tanks
• Design a natural method to ‘break’ emulsions
• Separate the FOG’s from the effluent stream as a low moisture viable by-product
Benefits• With the FOG’s removed other components of
the client WWTP work more efficiently
• Sites with direct discharge consent are far less likely to breach consent levels
• The income stream created from recovered FOG’s can be significant
• Disposal costs of sludge from existing treatment methods are significantly reduced
• Energy and Chemical costs are reduced
• The ‘Green Credentials’ of clients are enhanced
Intelligent system that monitors the effluent and makes real time decisions on process
automatically
Why Recoil works
• The use of low shear pumps prevents unnecessary mixing of the effluent
• Submersible pumps have high speed impellors which mix the effluent as in a blender and can damage the structure of the oil droplets
• Low shear above ground pumps are easier and safer to maintain
• Variable speed motors mean that the lower flow which is normally from pre-rinse and primary process is given more treatment time
Primary Balancing
• The primary tank is where solids are removed if necessary
• The incoming effluent is introduced into a ‘loaded’ area of FOG’s
• The FOG’s coalesce and are held prior to being allowed to pass to the next section along with an appropriate amount of effluent
• The dielectric range of the effluent is constantly monitored, if it moves out of range the systems takes action.
• This action involves the addition of de-oiled effluent from the final tank and/or fresh water to balance the ratio
Separator tank
• The effluent is transfer from the primary tank by transfer chute
• The effluent is introduced into a chamber which again is ‘loaded’ with previously separated FOG’s
• The further separation of FOG’s and extraction is performed by hydraulic means, the movement of the effluent drives the FOG’s from the system via hydrostatic pressure created with the use of baffles and weirs

FOG discharge and management
• The decanted FOG’s are discharged into a heated hopper which features level control and a transfer pump
• The controls activate the transfer pump and forward the recovered FOG’s to a suitable store to await collection
Final tank and recirculation system• The effluent is then transferred to the ‘final’ tank
where once again if any further extracted FOG’s are present these coalesce with the incoming effluent
• The outlet pumps/valves are operated via level controls to retain an amount of effluent in the tank
• The tank is divided into two compartments, one for the main effluent and the other is divided by a weir
• Periodically the plc will raise the level in this tank to decant any FOG’s over the weir
• The smaller compartment is fitted with a pump to transfer the material concentrate back to the primary tank
• The main chamber is fitted with a pump to send the de-oiled effluent back to the primary tank to balance any mass contamination events
Sample Clients• Spreads and butter industry
• Added value meat plants
• Oil refining and packaging plants
• Ready meal process plants
• Waste oil transfer and process
• Rendering plants
Expected Outcomes
• Spreads industry; 25-45% COD reduction, >98% FOG removal
• Meat Process; 25-30% COD reduction, 25-30% BOD reduction, 50-80% Suspended Solids reduction, >98% FOG removal
• Oil Process/Packaging; up to 85% COD reduction >98% FOG removal
